Soul on the Air #15 - Dr. Bop, 1973

Upload Music Files - Audio Hosting - Dr. Bop - WAWA Aircheck, Nov...

The "Soul on the Air" feature returns to "Get on Down ..." with Hoyt Locke aka Dr. Bop from WAWA, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I don't know much about Dr. Bop except that he was a popular R&B jock who passed away in 1976. The good Doctor is in good form in this 30-minute aircheck from November 1973. After a boisterous series of boasts made while Jr. Walker's "Way Back Home" plays in the background, he lays down some solid soul sounds, including James Brown's "Stone to the Bone," two of Al Green's hits, "Show and Tell" by Al Wilson, and the Patterson Twins' exquisite "Back in Love Again." WAWA's AM frequency signed off at sundown, and at the end of the aircheck, we're told to switch over to the FM band to keep on jamming. Oh, if I only could! This is a fun aircheck that's just too short!

Once again, you've transported us to sheer pleasure in memories! He is cracking my side with his string of rhymes...Ha ha ha ha!!!! They don't do it like this anymore. I love it.

Thank you so much Jason---this is a wonderful series!

Yes they do! If you are ever in Dallas check out Soul 730AM in the morning with Bobby Patterson! He'll jump on your bladder and tell you what's a matter! Bobby had some soul hits in the 60's and 70's. Ever heard TCB or TYA?

"TCB or TYA" - I LOVE that tune! "There was a time a woman would stand by her man, it didn't matter much what shape his pockets was in. Now those days are gone, if you ain't got no dough, all you gonna hear a sister say is NO!"

Doctor Bop began his radio career in Columbus, Ohio in August, 1956 at 1230 WCOL. He owned a record store here along with his brother Edgar called "Bop's Record Shop" and one night while at the station to record commercials for his store the DJ on the air quit and walked out. The engineer on duty asked Doc to go on the air and fill in until he could call another jock in. The station's format then was Big Band music but Doc started playing R&B and Rock & Roll, thus becomming the first jock to play Rock music in Columbus! He generated so much excitement that night that the station not only hired him but they changed their format to Top-40. Doctor bop became the most popular announcer in Columbus and "The New WCOL" became the top station and remained #1 for the next 20 years. Doc left Columbus and went to WAWA in 1960. He is buried in Greenlawn Cemetary in Columbus under his real name, Hoyte Locke. Just thought I would share, Rick Minerd, former WCOL DJ.

I loved listening to Dr. Bop. I met my first love when the phone lines would get jammed up and you could talk to others.. Anyone remember doing that? I was raised in the North End(Linden Area), but loved to go to the South End,(which I was forbidden to do). Loved the Parsons Show.
