The pharmacy profession is a toxic, bullying, underpaid and stressful profession in New Zealand. the introduction of discount pharmacies which the ownership cartel is trying to desperately shut down with the public narrative that you should “support small business” has caused wages to rise and forced some improvements in how the ownership cartel treats its staff but only a bit. I tried to speak out on the horrendous conditions many working in community pharmacy are facing and a group of pharmacy owners (non discounters) who had NEVER EVEN MET ME complained to the pharmacy council that I was “mentally unwell” and therefore unfit to practice. The pharmacy council decided to “investigate” these ridiculous complaints and threw out the complaints but it was still a complete waste of mine and the councils time (who charge us close to $1000 per year for these “services”). I’ve worked in discount pharmacies and the conditions are the same everywhere you go except discounters seem to pay better wages. The cartel of owners and the guild are on a piss poor lobbying campaign to go back to how things were ten years ago but they have done nothing to deserve better treatment. The entire industry should become a state owned enterprise and majority run by robots.
