Hi Reddit! Excited for my first AMA.
For those of you not yet familiar with opera, I got a relatively late start myself. When I was 17, the New Orleans Opera called my high school’s drama club offering $10 for extras. Though it was the $10 that drew me in, it was the historic production of Halevy’s “La Juive” starring Richard Tucker that made me fall in love. I also love history and likely would have studied archaeology had it not been for music.
I'll be playing Scarpia in San Diego Opera's production of Tosca March 25-April 2. Click here if you'd like to learn more.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the great questions, it's been great getting to spend the morning with you. Hope to see some of you at this weekend's performances!
Hi Reddit! I am Carolyn Oglesby u/DrGrammy2012. I’m joining today to pay tribute to my mother Dr. Gladys West and her contribution to inventing GPS.
She is best known for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the Earth and her work on developing satellite geodesy models that were eventually incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS).
Together with the people behind the Hidden Heroes project, I’ll be answering your questions!
You can also read Dr. Gladys West’s story on Hidden Heroes: https://hiddenheroes.netguru.com/gladys-west

Hi Reddit, I am Felix Aplin, a neuroscientist and research fellow at UNSW! I’m jumping on today to chat all things neuroscience and neural engineering.
About me - I completed my PhD at the University of Melbourne, and have taken on research fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA) and Hannover Medical School (Germany). I'm a big nerd who loves talking about the brain and all things science related.
I also have a soft spot for video games - I like to relax with a good rogue-like or co-op game before bed.
My research focus is on how we can harness technology to connect with, and repair, our nervous system. I lead a team that investigates new treatments for chronic pain here at UNSW’s Translational Neuroscience Facility.
Looking forward to chatting with you all about neuroscience, my research and the future of technology.
Here’s my proof featuring my pet bird, Melicamp (or Meli for short): https://imgur.com/a/E9S95sA

I am Marco, Chief Engineer of SBUDNIC (www.sbudnic.space). The satellite is a 3U cubesat built at Brown University over the course of a year and a half by a team of students, myself included. The whole thing costs about $7500 USD if you were to rebuild it from scratch, uses a novel spring-loaded drag sail to deorbit itself (no space junk!), runs off an Arduino Nano, and is powered by 48 AA lithium batteries. SBUDNIC was launched as part of the SpaceX Transporter 5 mission out of SLC40 on Cape Canveral in late May of 2022.
We just released data that shows that our drag system is working as designed! It's been covered by Phys.org, PopSci, and seems to be pretty popular here on Reddit too.
Our hope is that this satellite demonstrates that responsible deorbiting is possible without significant cost or mass penalty.
Ask me anything!

EDIT: Thanks all for dropping in your thoughtful questions. That's all the time I have for today's AMA, but we will be on the lookout for any big, lingering questions later on.

The Climate Coach column and newsletter host an honest discussion about the environmental choices we face in our daily lives. The Climate Coach digs into data and gives evidence-backed advice and thoughtful analysis about what matters in protecting the planet, the environment and one another.
I've covered a range of topics such as green funeral options, better ways to use your appliances, how to install a heat pump and more. My latest column talks about how Apple's new "Clean Energy Charging" feature previews how we can reach net-zero emissions by using our devices to help manage the electricity grid.
Before joining the Post in 2022, I spent nearly two decades as a reporter and editor covering climate, technology, and economics for outlets such as Quartz and CNN.com, and served as managing editor of Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Post.
Thanks for having me here. What questions do you have about personal efforts to combat climate change?
