I know that Peter Gabriel is very acclaimed amongst critics with many of his albums being received well amongst initial release and also held in high regard when it comes to retrospectives however I feel like David Bowie gets alot more praise than Peter Gabriel and i can't understand why.

In his early career David Bowie was important for popularising and giving a face to the Glam Rock genre with releases including 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust' and 'Aladdin Sane' which inspired artists including T.Rex, Kiss, Joy Division and other artists however Peter Gabriel also pioneered and popularised the Progressive Rock genre with his band Genesis. Whilst I don't believe Peter Gabriel was responsible alone for Genesis being a success I do feel like he made them more recognised due to his creativity in not just the music but his performances too much like David Bowie.

I also feel their careers in the late 70's followed an incredibly similar route. David Bowie would stray away from the 'glamier' Rock of his previous albums and focus on a more artsy sensibility on 'Low' much like Peter Gabriel did on his first solo album.

Although Low borrows from other genres including the Berlin School sounds of bands like Tangerine Dream and also the Ambient sounds of Brian Eno, I think Peter Gabriel achieved this sound too in the early 80s and did it just as well as Bowie by fusing a mixture of New Wave, World Music and even Post Punk on his third album which I feel was his creative peak.

Then around the mid 80's both Bowie and Gabriel would decide to go down a more pop path and I can't help but feel David Bowie's music around this era was weaker, Modern Love is brilliant as well as China Girl but it just doesn't compare to the genius songwriting of Sledgehammer, In your Eyes or Don't Give Up all found on what I believe to be Peter Gabriel's greatest album "So."

After that Peter Gabriel went onto release several more respectable albums as well as a soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ which is a soundtrack so perfect and serving as a masterful accompaniment to the film however by the late 80's Bowie was something of a has been.

Which makes me wonder, why isn't Peter Gabriel held in tbe same regard as David Bowie despite having an equal share of good albums around the same quality of each other?
