For some background, I stream with my male partner on Twitch and it’s like, our thing. We have an awesome time and love our community. We stream mostly retro, which is a male heavy genre, with some intellectualism regarding original hardware. Since I’m not as quite up-to-snuff with that— partially due to my age, partially due to lack of interest— I try to make up for it with friendliness and generally being pleasant, welcoming, and wholesome. That’s how I try to be anyway, but if I’m honest, I feel like it’s all I can really contribute to the retro streaming community.

It came out a couple of years ago that someone I thought to be one of my male Twitch friends actually told someone that I was in love with him, which is absolutely not true at all, nor have I ever done anything besides simply be friendly and support him within Twitch. I have also recently come to identify as graysexual, which perhaps adds to the depth of my disappointment and feelings of betrayal. He said that I was clearly a scene girl in my younger days (false) and I was naive and young because I’m from the Midwest. It felt so slimy to read these messages. I just remember trembling.

I always secretly wondered if my male Twitch friends somehow justified our friendship with thinking that the attention I was giving them was anything besides platonic, and this experience confirmed that they could certainly be true. I have to believe that it isn’t always true, but dang. This experience sucked a lot. I’m literally just a nice, married, streaming person. Don’t pretend like you know me.

About Community

"Girl Gamer" -- One of the most controversial and polarizing terms for women who game (and, sure, maybe one of the most cringe). This is a community space for ladies to hang out, talk about gaming, and game together. We also discuss topics around women in geek culture and debrief about experiences that occur as a result of their gender. Folks of all genders and identities are welcome to join discussions here.
