Victoria Derby History

Derby Day is one of the most iconic in racing, and the Victoria Derby is one of the oldest events in the Australian turf calendar. It first ran in 1855, when Queen Victoria was on the throne and Ned Kelly was born. That year Rose of May secured victory with a fine run, and fillies won the first three editions of the Victoria Derby.

However, a filly has not won this race since Frances Tressady in 1923, which might be worth bearing in mind when looking at the Derby Day Odds
and working out who to bet on.

The race was run over a mile and a half until 1973, when it changed to 2500m to incorporate the metric system. The distance has been somewhat controversial ever since, as there is just 200m until the first turn, and 2500m is a difficult trip for three-year-olds so early in the season. However, it does separate the elite stayers from the rest of the bunch, so it is a fascinating pointer for future events.

In 1979 the Victoria Derby was handed Group One status and it has retained it ever since. The Vase at the Valley, the Caulfield Classic, the Cox Plate, the Spring Champion and the Geelong Classic are all feasible lead ups to this race, and horses coming down from Sydney have thrived of late.

Over the years, the Victoria Derby has seen many famous winners. The first three winners were fillies, but as mentioned, there hasn't been a victorious filly since 1923. There has only ever been one back-to-back winner: Fireworks, who was able to salute in November 1967 and January 1968 after the race was moved in his three-year-old season.

Notable Victoria Derby Day winners also include Cox Plate winners Taj Rossi, who won both the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Cantala Stakes before claiming the Cox Plate. Better Loosen Up also won the Cantala Stake en route to his Cox Plate triumph. Superstar sprinters such as Sunlight and Merchant Navy also emerged as Victoria Derby Day winners in recent years.

Notable winners of the Victoria Derby include: Briseis in 1877, Grand Flaneur (1881) Poseidon (1906), Manfred (1925), Phar Lap (1929), Hall Mark (1933), Skipton (1941), Comic Court (1948), Delta (1949), Hydrogen (1951), Sailor’s Guide (1955), Tulloch (1957), Sky High (1960), Tobin Bronze (1965), Silver Sharpe (1970), Taj Rossi (1973), Dulcify (1978), Grosvenor (1982), Red Anchor (1984), Handy Proverb (1985), Stylish Century (1989), Mahogany (1993), Nothin’ Leica Dane (1995), Elvstroem (2003), Efficient in 2006, Monaco Consul in 2009, and Preferment in 2014.

The race can often feature less than 16 horses as the enormous task of running the 2500m is too daunting for the connections of many entrants.

Quite often the lead-up races produce a short-priced favourite but the likes of Rebel Raider (2008), Fiveandahalfstar (2012) and Second Coming (1997) have produced upset results after proving the superior stayer.

Betting on Derby Day is a tricky task for even the experienced punters, which makes having the best Victoria Derby form guide essential to work out the relevant facts and figures and which horses will go the journey and which competitors will struggle.
