The 2023 The Coast is a 1600m race - for three and four-year-olds and will be held at Gosford racecourse on Saturday 6th May.

The Coast History

The Coast doesn't have a long history having just began in 2021. Despite that, it is still one of New South Wales richest races held outside Sydney.

A 1600m handicap for three and four-year-olds, The Coast delivers the highest prize money for any race ever contested in Gosford, with the whole day being the highlight profile meeting of the calendar year.

The meeting provides local trainers and jockeys with the opportunity to earn big prize-money on their home track and delivers a showpiece event to bring tourists and locals to the town for some classy racing. In this, it adds to the sporting landscape in the region, one that also includes the Central Coast Mariners - based in Gosford - and the Newcastle Knights based in Newcastle down the F3,

Like other provincial standalone meetings, The Coast race day consists of nine races held under metropolitan status.

These include the $250,000 Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) and the $150,000 Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m). All the remaining support races on the card will offer a prize money pool of $125,000 excluding the $75,000 Highway Handicap. It is a fantastic day of racing.

The Coast 2023 Horses

The initial winner of The Coast, the John Sargent-trained Brandenburg, was coming off a preparation where he'd raced across the Sydney Autumn carnival without much success. Having won The Coast, Brandenburg was sent north to contest a Queensland Group One, but came across Zaaki at his most destructive in the Doomben Cup in a race where Annabel Neasham's star defeated Toffee Tongue by seven lengths, with Brandenburg finishing in third, 9.25L adrift of the winner.

The horse didn't have much luck when contesting the G1 Winx Stakes in August either, losing rider Rachel King in that race.

The Coast 2023 Scratchings

We'll advise you on The Coast 2023 scratchings when they're declared on the Saturday morning before the race.

Scratchings are always a possibility in racing, no matter which race a horse is contesting, whether it be a Group 1 or BM58.

These scratchings can occur in the days leading up to a race, on race morning or even in the minutes before a race.

The trainer's decision on scratching a horse will often depend on several factors like the nature of the horse or the status of the track.

Sometimes these scratchings can be tactical as well, with the trainer opting to run their horse in an easier event or a race where the barrier draw is more favourable to the horse.

If you've placed a Win/Place bet on horse in race (with TAB or another bookie) and your runner is scratched, you can get a refund equal to the value of your bet.
