It's not just retail. I've worked in all kinds of industries and severance has never been an option for me. Even now the closest thing in my contract to severance is if my position eliminates my company vehicle I get a one time $5000 payment.

I'm afraid if I don't take this now I'm not going to be able to find something better in the future when the place does potentially sell. And then I'll have to move back in with family which I really don't want to do.
I can understand that. Don't make poor decisions because of your family. There's no right answer but twice the price the rent and losing a good landlord for a possibly poopy one would make me double think jumping into a lease that's for sure a down grade. Id wait as long as possible. Sorry I know this is basically where you're already at and of little help. I hope you figure how what is best for you.
There isn't even a lease It's just a month by month thing where he can kick me out in 30 days or I can leave within 30 days which is one of the reasons why I was even considering it was because if I found something better I just give 30 days notice and then I could be out of there without much ties.
The guy below me has solid advice. Don't freak out. There are protections in place for you no matter what. You won't suddenly be on the street so don't jump into anything because of fear of the unknown. Any buyer will have to make reasonable accommodations so you have a bit of time to figure it out. Another 3 months is another $1500 saved to get yourself into something when the time comes.
