What unusual job does someone you know do?

I know someone who is (amongst other things) employed by landowners in dealing with travellers who have set up on their land.

A lot of his job involves helping people with preventative measure in keeping travellers off their land (eg. making it difficult for them to set up on), but he is also experienced in removing them (even physically in the past).

He makes a decent profit, given how long it normally takes to evict people going through the traditional channels.

He isn’t prejudiced and has nothing against them personally. Indeed, he views many as worthy opponents and is good friends with some, but a job is a job.

What is a TV show or film that everyone tells you is amazing, but you can raise no interest in watching?

The question came to mind after seeing many good reviews for the new season of Ted Lasso, and several of my friends and people I follow online talking about how much they love it. Friends have also told me I'd probably like it.

Despite all that, I find I just have zero interest in watching it. So, what's your version of that: a film or TV show that all the evidence suggests you would probably like, but which you still find yourself unable to generate any interest in watching?

People who still smoke, how are you able to afford it?

From the budget yesterday, it was announced that tax on tobacco is to increase 2% above inflation and tax on hand rolling tobacco to increase 6% above inflation. This puts the average pack of 20 around £14 - for comparison UK drug information websites estimate the average gram bag of heroin to sell between £10 - £15.

This means that many smokers are quite literally paying more than a heroin addict for a daily fix. Or, they are pushing close to around £100 a week spend - more than some mortgage repayments and nearly 1/3rd of average British take-home. So how are people affording to smoke? Is there an assumed hit to disposable income to keep up with the eye-watering costs of smoking, or are all UK consumers just buying from the bloke down the pub now, and tobacco companies are just making no profits from the UK?

Have you ever worked a job where they play the radio in the office?

Recently started a new job. They play the radio in the office the entire day. It is slowly but surely driving me insane. I heard Do You Really Want to Hurt Me probably 5 times today, and Sweet Caroline had to be close to 10. Worse still, one coworker across from me hums along the entire day. Loudly. It’s actually driving me nuts and no one else seems to mind. Curious if this is a common thing?

waking up and seeing most/smoke, advice?

Hi guys, just a query to see if anyone has had anything similar happen…

i’ve had 3 separate occasions where i’ve suddenly woken up, very abruptly and i’ve seen smoke/mist in my room. The first two times i’ve been convinced there was a fire and erratically ran around my house trying to find the cause. the smoke is odourless every time and i’ve noticed after that it can feel quite heavy to breathe. The third time it happened it felt like a familiar occurrence (i guess it kind of is) so i’ve still checked round in case there was fire but all was fine in the house. i woke up my partner and asked if he can also see the smoke and he said he couldn’t see anything. (this was the first time he was home when i’ve witnessed this.)

Am i hallucinating? what explanation is there for this?

I’m obviously going to talk to my GP about this but waiting for appointments is long and just wanted to go into this conversation with a few ideas of what i could be experiencing.

also, sorry if i’ve not put this into the right group. i’m new to posting on reddit, no idea how this all works so if i’m in the wrong place, could someone guide me on where to go 😅

Does the British Zoomer generation come off as very Americanised?

Seems to me like British ‘Z’oomers use a lot of American metaphors and acronyms and American sayings, even see some of them spell things the American way.

Am I making this up in my head or is this actually happening?
