Anybody else deal with upper belts resorting to smashing for the entire match? I have an upper belt guy I roll with sometimes and he really likes to move to side control and smash me with a cross face while putting all his weight on my chest. There's a big weight and skill difference between the two of us and I have the following 2 thoughts/questions I'd be interested to hear your opinions on:

  1. Who's getting better here? Will spending a lot of time being smashed help me or him grow in the game? The upper belt guy is just hanging out and using his 35+ pound advantage and experience to man handle me while I'm usually just trying to get frames and survive. I know that I need to do a better job of not letting him pass my guard but I don't think either of us are gaining from it once he does. I have recovered half guard a few times from side control but he just lays on my face until he can take side control again.

  2. What's the best approach to not wasting so much time and energy? Today I tapped and reset after 4 minutes in this position and he seemed confused. I just said I was having a hard time breathing and was making zero progress. I have no problem getting beat but he isn't setting up submissions or advancing positions. He just weighs me down until I tap then goes right back to the same position once we reset.

I like the guy and don't want to not roll with him because I don't want to seem like a bad sport, but boy does getting absolutely crushed for 6 minutes and dealing with rug burn on my face suck a fat one. I appreciate any and all advice.
