Dennis Hopper ~R.I.P~

Dennis Hopper - May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010

"I should have been dead ten times over. I've thought about that a lot. I believe in miracles. It`s an absolute miracle that I'm still around."

[talking on the phone with David Lynch after reading the Blue Velvet 1986 script] "David, you have to let me play Frank because I am Frank."

Voodoo Wagon repost: Gov't Mule "Thorazine Shuffle"

A Voodoo Wagon repost here to match the Floppy Boot post:
Gov't Mule kicking ass on "Thorazine Shuffle."  This is a terrific set: Matt A. throws in some well-placed smashes on drums, Warren brings out the demons on vocals and guitar,
Jorgenn Carlson rumbles on bass, and Danny Louis gets the
wickedness moving from his B-3 and electric piano.
This cut turns me ON and gets me OFF at the same time!!

West, Bruce and Franco - Poughkeepsie, NY, Dec. 19, 1987

And now, appearing in Poughkeepsie, New York:  it's..."West, Bruce, and Franco!"
(Omigod.  "Poughkeepsie."  One large brick building that looked like it was once a factory; the town was a symbol of urban decay and economic decline along the Hudson River.  If you're Jack Bruce, this is a long way from the Royal Albert Hall; if you're Leslie West, that's just over the G.W. Bridge in the Bronx from home in Long Island...and if you're
Joey Franco from Twisted Sister...well, in his case, it was a gig, right?)

Voodoo Wagon - Back From The Dead May 20, 2009

Joy Division - Les Bains Douches 1979

Joy Division - Live Les Bains Douches
December
18, 1979
Paris, France

Soundboard Recording -Out of Print @192

pass = fbsvw

Les Bains Douches, has a clear recording and is evenly mixed (the first nine tracks are taken from a recording for a radio broadcast of the December '79 gig--tracks 10-16 are taken from two shows in Amsterdam from January '80, and sound a bit less clear). The band sounds more together and the songs are aggressive, better suited to a live setting.

These songs are nothing if not tough. Everything is sped up. It's loose and raw. There is a primal passion in the music that matches the intensity of Ian Curtis' singing. On "Disorder," when he cries, "I got the spirit, lose the feeling, let it out somehow," it is not sterile and haunted like it is on Unknown Pleasures but has the kick of man who is exorcising something un-namable. On "Insight," after Curtis barks "I'm not afraid anymore," and that cheesy laser beam keyboard part kicks in, it's not really cheesy. The rapid synth pings are coupled with a prominent, dissonant base riff which creates an off-balance, atonal kind of noise, which is equally appropriate and disorienting. "Shadowplay" explodes with a huge burst of guitar distortion, and Bernard Sumner's guitar licks are racked with tension. He likewise generates a terrible amount of noise on "Day of the Lords."

Tracks List:
1. Disorder
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart
3. Insight
4. Shadowplay
5. Transmission
6. Day of the Lords
7. Twenty Four Hours
8. These Days
9. Means to an End
10. Passover
11. New Dawn Fades
12. Atrocity Exhibition
13. Digital
14. Dead Souls
15. Autosuggestion
16. Atmosphere

Curtis's last live performance was on 2 May 1980 at Birmingham University, a show that included Joy Division's first and only performance of the song "Ceremony", later recorded by New Order and released as their first single. The last song Curtis performed on stage was "Digital". The recording of this performance can be found on the compilation album Still.

Detailed in Debbie Curtis's "Touching from a Distance", Curtis was staying at his parents' house at this time and attempted to talk his wife into staying with him on 17 May 1980, to no avail. Debbie left him in her house overnight while she left to do some errands. Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle claimed in a 2006 interview that Curtis would sometimes phone him during the night and sing the Throbbing Gristle song "Weeping" — a song about suicide — to him.

In the early hours of 18 May 1980, Curtis hanged himself in the kitchen of his house in Macclesfield. He had just viewed Werner Herzog's film Stroszek and listened to Iggy Pop's The Idiot. At the time of his death, his health was failing as a result of his epilepsy and attempting to balance his musical ambitions with his marriage, which was foundering in the aftermath of his affair with journalist Annik Honoré. His wife found his body the next morning.

Tony Wilson who had signed the band later said, "I'd been warned on a train to London two weeks earlier by Annik [Honoré]. I asked her, 'What do you think of the new album.' She goes, 'I'm terrified.' I said, 'What are you terrified of?' She replies, 'Don't you understand? He means it.' And I go, 'No, he doesn't mean it — it's art.' And guess what? He fucking meant it."

Curtis's memorial stone, which is inscribed with "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart", was stolen in July 2008 from the grounds of Macclesfield Cemetery. The missing memorial stone was later replaced by a new one.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - Live WNYC

The Brooklyn soul, funk and R&B band Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are known for their vintage analog grooves, fiery horn section, and of course, the defiant yet vulnerable vocals of singer Sharon Jones. Today, the full band turns up the funk in WNYC's Greene Space.
For many years, soul singer Sharon Jones played wedding gigs while working as a corrections officer. Then, at age 40, came a record deal and a partnership with the Dap-Kings, a band whose resume includes work with such artists as Amy Winehouse and Al Green.
On the day that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings release their fourth album, “I Learned the Hard Way,” they join Soundcheck for a live performance.

The Decemberists - Live SXSW 2009

The Decemberists - Live SXSW Festival
Austin, TX
- 2009
FM Source @128

Led by Helena, MT, native Colin Meloy, Portland, OR's the Decemberists craft theatrical, hyper-literate pop songs that draw heavily from late-'60s British folk acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle and the early-'80s college rock grandeur of the Waterboys and R.E.M. The band's initial lineup also included drummer Ezra Holbrook, bassist Nate Query, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk. Frontman Meloy had previously devoted some time to an alternative country group before breaking off to pursue his craft as a singer/songwriter in the city of Portland, a move that eventually led to the Decemberists' formation. Drawing influence from his degree in creative writing, he began fashioning a hybrid of literate lyrics and wide-ranging pop music, touching upon everything from Sandy Denny to Morrissey in the process.

Before Hush Records released the band's debut album in 2002, the Decemberists baited their initial fans with a five-track EP. Their full-length debut, Castaways and Cutouts, was re-released that same year on the Kill Rock Stars label, and the band began to accumulate a serious fan base. After adding organist and keyboardist Rachel Blumberg to the group, in 2003 the Decemberists released Her Majesty, another fine collection of theatrical indie pop with pastoral sensibilities that further cemented their growing reputation. One year later, a five-part epic EP entitled The Tain -- based on the eighth century Irish poem of the same name -- appeared, followed by the full-length Picaresque in 2005.

The group, which at this point consisted of Meloy, Conlee, Query, Funk, and drummer John Moen, made the move to the major leagues by signing with Capitol Records in advance of 2006's The Crane Wife, which managed to hit number 35 on the Billboard 200. The album also grabbed the attention of comedian/actor Stephen Colbert, who challenged Funk to a guitar solo competition during a live taping of his show, The Colbert Report. For their next project, the Decemberists tackled one of Meloy's most ambitious ideas to date: an honest to God rock opera. The Hazards of Love appeared in 2009, featuring a fantasy-filled story line as well as cameos from My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark, and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden.

Spoon have made a literate, rocking, recording that occupies a funny place--the songs are not unconventional, per se, yet they're somehow really special. This concert displays the emotional resonance and big rock power of, say, Thin Lizzy and Mott the Hoople; the sonically referential, indie-rock smarts of a band like The Verve and amazing hooks that recall the Zombies. This Austin, Texas, trio has chosen to work on perfecting their craft without paying much heed to mainstream or trends. If you have never had the chance to see them in person do so. Until then this will more than suffice.
