Luis Guzman is a great actor and an awesome dude, but he was a horrible choice for Gomez Adams.

Raul Julia set the bar astronomically high for this character and I feel someone more charismatic would have been better, maybe someone like Pedro Paschal.

I think both Guzman and Zeta Jones were okay in roles that were done much better prior. Did I find myself annoyed with both at times, yeah. That being said, the actor that did Thing deserves an Emmy as does Jenna who played Wednesday. Armison’s take on Uncle Fester was definitely solid. Wednesday is a can’t miss series on Netflix. All of the spoofs on various horror films and teen series was epic and had me laughing In every episode.

Thing is amazing. So much nuance from a damn hand!

Is it cool if I haven’t watched adams family and barely know anything about them other than clips of Wednesday’s character that I watched years ago?

I think he was okay but I think both him and Morticia just weren't written very well in this series. Both kind of had side roles that were kind of out of character. I think if they just had better writing for them, they would do a wonderful job. Luis is more of a comic book Gomez.

...and of course Raul Julia set an absurdly high bar. I miss that man.

Raul Julia could turn trash into a masterpiece. We're talking Street Fighter specifically

Since the whole point of the show was to focus on Wednesday I'm ok with them being side characters. But as someone that grew up on Raul Julia as Gomez, Guzman's delivery just fell flat for me.

I think RJ had it perfect, and CZJ was an adequate Morticia, Morticia and Gomez were the ultimate alpha couple, successful smart but quirky. This play between characters was lacking (I've only watched ep1) and the new Gomez is bumbling and unsure

Have you seen the comic strip?

Raul Julia was way too charismatic.

(edit: He was great! But just not in the same manner as the print comics.)

And Luis Guzman looks perfect, based on the comic.

Yup - the original take was Morticia being this super model and Gomez being short and strange. They’re not supposed to match. It’s part of the kooky.

Raul Julia was an exceptional Gomez as well. I think it would have been a mistake to try and recapture his Gomez.

But the character was charismatic in the 60s television shows well. I think that was the inspiration. Julia actually toned it down quite a bit as the other portrayal was even more comedic

I’m really disliking CZJ as Morticia. She didn’t do her own take on Morticia and she’s a weak substitute for Angelica Huston’s Morticia.

CZJ seemed like an old lady somehow.
The original TV Morticia was 34, Huston was 40 in the '91 movie, while CZJ is 53. To be fair though this movie is about an older Wednesday too.

Yeah, she bothers me the most. It's like she kind of has the look but definitely not the vibe.

Her one dress they made her wear also wasn’t very good.

Yeah not really liking her take. She's too cold and distant for my taste.
