You must do your duties without attaching yourself to the fruits(results of your effort). If you attach your mind to the fruit, you will be either excited or depressed. If the fruit is achieved, you are excited and if the fruit is not achieved, you are depressed. Both excitement and depression are the ways of fast expenditure of your reserved energy. If the energy is lost, you become weak and you will be unable to do your further duties. The work is in your hand and the fruit is in the hand of God. You think that the work must give you the fruit in destined way. Several times you are not getting the fruit for your work. What is the message in this? The message from God is that all the fruits are in His hand. You are not giving importance to God and you are depending on the work only and you believe that the natural system must yield the corresponding fruits of the works. If the natural system is allowed to be proved, God will be forgotten.

There is no doubt in the mechanized natural system that links the works with the corresponding fruits. But, you have forgotten that this natural system is created and established by God only. This natural system is functioning by the will of God only. Therefore, often this natural system is violated by God, so that you will recognize the ultimate as God but not the natural system. This point is the basis for the statement that man proposes and God disposes. God is not egoistic to establish His importance over the natural system. The effort of God is only to uplift the man by leading him towards His feet. His love and affection on every human being is the love and affection of a father. This type of love is justified because God is the creator of all the human beings along with the world. In the life of any human being, the success is always based on the unexpected and unimaginable side only.

Most of his efforts fail and success becomes unseen. The human being cries that the injustice is winning, but does not realize that the defeat is due to his faith on the natural system and on his ego of work. He does not realize that God is trying to preach him about this truth. However, this does not mean that you should stop the work and depend on God becoming inactive and lazy.

The fruits of your work are in the hands of God

You should work hard and do your duties to the best of your sincerity. You should only detach from the fruits realizing that the fruits are in the hands of God and not in the law of mechanical system of work and fruits. When you are detached from the fruits through this faith, you are getting two advantages. The first advantage is that you are always energetic since your energy is conserved due to absence of excitement and depression. The second advantage is that you will develop devotion to God, which is not linked to any fruit. The life of devotion is this single point only, which is nothing but that you should not link the devotion to any type of fruit. The fruit should be neither of this world nor of the upper world. You should not love God for getting any fruit in this world or in the upper world. The fruit in the upper world is generally the protection from the hell. This fruit of the upper world is generally focused in the old age.

When the aspiration for fruit disappears, the devotion disappears in every human being and you will not find any devotee. As long as the aspiration for fruit exists, the devotion is a dead body only. When the aspiration for fruit disappears and the devotion still exists, such devotion is alive. For such alive devotion only God is captured. This is the only clue for capturing God. This stage should appear at least in the old age, when all the desires of this world almost get fulfilled. But, unfortunately, the desire for protection from the hell appears in the mind in the old age. Therefore, the devotion is always dead till the last breath of the human being. Shankara says that you should be detached from the fruits related to this world and the upper world also (Ihamutraphalaviragah).

You should get detached from the fruit of work

The aspiration for the fruit (of your work ) disappears only when you could sacrifice the actual fruit. It is only cheating others and it is only finally self cheating to say that the detachment to the aspiration of fruit is equal to the detachment to the fruit. You are eating the sweet and say that you are detached from the aspiration for the sweet. If you are able to sacrifice the sweet, your detachment to the aspiration of sweet gets proved. Gita clearly says in the beginning itself in the second chapter that you should get detached from the fruit (Phalamtyaktvaa…) and this should not be interpreted as the detachment from the aspiration to the fruit.

Scholars have misinterpreted this as the detachment from the aspiration to the fruit and made the path easy for the incapable spiritual aspirants. This is lowering the level of the absolute truth and thereby making the path easier. By this, the fruit of absolute path is not really achieved. But, an impression is created that you can get the absolute fruit by the lowered easier path. You are getting the post of District Collector through IAS examination only. You will get the post of a clerk by the Group-IV examination. The misinterpretation says that you will get the post of District Collector through Group-IV examination. Now, by such knowledge, people are misled and reward the preachers heavily. The preachers are giving such false knowledge only to get the rewards from the cheated public. The preacher, who preaches the absolute truth is discarded by the public, but such a preacher is immensely rewarded by God. Therefore, the preacher should not misinterpret the knowledge for the sake of public reward.

The absolute truth should be revealed on some day or other to the human being before it dies. The human being should not be kept under disguise throughout its life. In the initial stage, you may encourage the human beings through the misinterpreted knowledge, but you should not keep them under this wrong impression throughout their lives. If the spiritual aspirants is strong with full confidence, you can reveal the absolute truth in the beginning itself. For the sake of encouragement, even if you give the misinterpreted knowledge in the beginning, you should not leave the aspirant. You should watch the aspirant for some time and follow up till the absolute truth is reveled. After revealing the absolute truth, you need not follow the aspirant anymore.

DEVELOPING PURITY IN DEVOTION IS THE FIRST STEP

[Shri Anil Antony asked “Why are the lives of devotees always full of difficulties and miseries? Does this mean that Allah is always associated with misery and not bliss?” Shri Swami replied as follows.]

Allah is always associated with bliss. Everybody approaches Allah to get that bliss just like you approach the fire to get the heat. You love Allah only to get happiness, benefits and protection from Allah. Such love is instrumental love and not the ultimate love. Instrumental love means that you love somebody or something because that person or that thing is the instrument to give you happiness. This is stated by the sage Yajnyavalkya in Bruhadaaranyakopanishat. He says that anybody loves anything or anybody to fulfill his desire for happiness from that person or that thing (Atmanah kamaya sarvam priyam bhavati…).

One loves his wife because she gives him happiness. One loves his son because he serves him in the old age. One loves money because it gives all sorts of comforts in the life. If the wife or son or money gives problems and misery, one throws away these. From the childhood, the human being is habituated to love anything or anybody for the sake of its happiness only. The child loves its mother because she gives milk when it is hungry. All the worldly bonds are thus, selfish only. Nobody loves anybody for the sake of that person. Therefore, the human being is trained from the childhood with such selfish love only.

Therefore, when the human being loves Allah, naturally such selfish love only flows towards Allah. The human being thinks that its devotion to Allah is very pure and of very high level. No doubt, it is of very high level, but the entire love is impure only. The magnitude of anything with minus sign is to be condemned more and more only as its value becomes more and more. You should not appreciate the intensity of the devotion of a demon because such intensity of devotion is directly proportional to the intensity of his selfishness only.

In this aspect, there is no difference between a human being and demon. This concept of the devotion is not known to the human being and hence, it thinks that it is the greatest devotee. In fact, it is not even one percent devotee because its devotion is with negative sign. This point should be clarified to the devotee. Therefore, Allah gives difficulties and miseries to the devotee. In such case, the devotion vanishes away. Then the devotee will realize that his devotion is only instrumental but not ultimate. The devotee should not try to increase his devotion because the devotion is in negative sign.

Therefore, the first step is to transform the devotion from negative sign to positive sign. The positive sign is to love Allah without aspiring any benefit or happiness in return. For this purpose, Allah gives misery to the devotee. By this, one should not misunderstand that Allah is not associated with bliss and is associated with misery only. The context here is to preach the devotee to purify his devotion. This should not be mixed up with the other context that Allah is always associated with bliss. The very fact that Allah is associated with bliss spoils the devotees to get attracted for getting bliss from Allah. The root meaning of the word Durga is that the Allah is to be gained through misery (Duhkhena gamyate iti Durga). The meaning of this word contains all the above analysis.

THE SECRET OF LIFE


The human being is reluctant to miseries and enjoys the happy situation. The human being can be compared to an ignorant child, who enjoys the sweets only and is reluctant to chillies. Hence, such a human being is ignorant. The grown up adult enjoys both sweets and chillies in the meals. Similarly, a realized soul enjoys both happy situation and miseries in the life. Therefore, it is only ignorance, which is the inability of art of enjoyment. God created this world with happiness and misery. People enjoy the cinema, which contains both pleasant scenes and tragic scenes.


Similarly, people enjoy both sweet dishes and hot dishes in the meals. People enjoy the day and night. People enjoy the hot summer and the cold winter. The whole life and creation is full of alternating happiness and misery. If a person can enjoy both happy times and miseries in the life, he is equal to God. You may say that God enjoys the creation from outside. God also enters the creation in the form of human incarnation and enjoys both pleasant times and miseries in the life span. We see this truth in the life history of Rama and Krishna. Therefore, if you always crave for happiness only and reject miseries, it is unnatural and also ignorance of a child. The knowledge of the Gita preaches that you should enjoy even a top most misery, which is the time of death.


If you enjoy both miseries and happy situations, you are in a continuous state of enjoyment. You think that continuous enjoyment comes only through continuous times of happiness in the life. It is not correct. You get bored if you are served only with sweet dishes in the meals. Boring is misery. Therefore, misery is inevitable like summer after winter and winter after summer. The Indians denote happiness through cooling. The foreigners represent happiness through warming, which is heat. Therefore, the happiness to one is misery to the other. What is the reason? The foreigner is mainly exposed to winter, which bores him. Therefore, for a foreigner, the heat is happiness.


The Indian is mainly exposed to summer and therefore, cool atmosphere is happiness to him. This is a practical proof that the enjoyment is not confined to happy scene or tragic scene only. This also proves that you can enjoy both happiness and misery. Therefore, it is ignorance to ask God for removal of misery and sanction of continuous happiness. Happiness should lie in the process of enjoyment. Whether it is misery or happiness, you will find real happiness in the process of enjoyment of both.
