Nebraska Dem with trans son vows to block all bills: "No one in the world holds a grudge like me"

paxamericana:

Nebraska Democratic state Sen. Megan Hunt vowed to filibuster every bill for the rest of the legislative session after the Nebraska Legislature advanced a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for people under 19.

The legislation, sponsored by Republican state Sen. Kathleen Kauth, would ban minors from seeking gender confirmation surgery and hormone treatments — issues that could impact Hunt’s transgender son. She discussed her son and his testimony in committee on Wednesday and to the wider body the next day.

“My son is trans,” Hunt said of her 12-year-old child, who she says has been unable to attain gender-affirming care. “And this bill, colleagues, is such an affront to me personally and would violate my rights to parent my child in Nebraska.”

The bill is one of many anti-trans policies rolled out this year, according to Trans Legislation Tracker.

“We have made it clear that this is the line in the sand,” Hunt said to lawmakers on Thursday.

“People have said, ‘What if we go after your bills? What if we put a bunch of bills introduced by progressives up on the agenda? Are you going to filibuster those, too?’ Yes, because we’re not like you,” Hunt explained. “We have a principle and a value that actually matters that much to us that we’re willing to stand up for.”

Hunt was scolded over her stance by Republicans, who said her pushback set a bad precedent.

“You really don’t get it,” Hunt said to Republican state Sen. R. Brad von Gillern. “You’ve crossed a line and you’ve gone too far.”

“Don’t say hi to me in the hall, don’t ask me how my weekend was, don’t walk by my desk and ask me anything. Don’t send me Christmas cards ― take me off the list,” Hunt warned. “No one in the world holds a grudge like me, and no one in the world cares less about being petty than me. I don’t care. I don’t like you.”

“This hateful bill is not about policy. It is a basic human rights issue. The vote today will show us exactly which senators value the dignity, autonomy, and personhood of Nebraskans,” Hunt added on Twitter. “Do not cross this line. Do not violate our rights”

Hunt joins Democratic state Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh in her promise to filibuster the remainder of the legislature’s 90-day session, which ends on June 9.

“I will burn the session to the ground over this bill,” Cavanaugh warned.

I’m so tired of the whole “hey when you’re designing walkable cities make sure to include disabled people so we can access the town too” gets turned into “are you saying walkable cities are ableist??” Which turns into people calling us a bitch for trying to explain that we currently live in a walkable city but can’t leave the house alone because the sideways slope of the sidewalks and deep inclines for the streets make every street crossing a broken bone risk.

I live less than a mile from a carless town square, a library, two grocery stores, a post office, a medical clinic, a mental health crisis center, laundry mats, ice cream shops, book shops, bakeries, restaurants, more than I can even remember. It’s amazing and exactly what a lot of you dream of. The street crossings are super safe for pedestrians, people can jog, ride bikes, and push strollers just fine. Except I still can’t access any of it safely and anyone using a wheelchair or scooter is in danger. But apparently I’m an oil industry shill and a bitch for pointing that out instead of a disabled person who wants to get groceries or check a book out at the local library a few blocks away.

you know what, this whole thing has been pissing me off so much that i’m gonna add my Two Cents right on the post instead of the tags. OP is right and should say it. i have seen posts on my dash, reblogged by fellow disabled people i like and trust, calling me and people like me stupid for daring to bring up that hey, what an abled prison considers a walkable city might be completely inaccessible to me and many other people. we aren’t saying the concept of a walkable city is ableist. we’re not saying walkable cities are bad. we are a population of marginalized people who live our whole lives navigating a world that does not make room for us, trying to remind you that a walkable city that doesn’t take into account people who can’t walk, or who use mobility aids, or whatever- that supposed walkable city goes against the purpose of a walkable city in the first place.

we’re not telling you to stop trying, we’re telling you to TRY HARDER. we’re saying, hey, we are never fucking included in city planning, in building design, in discussions of public transportation, and we need to be. we’re not Making Up A Guy, here. we are always, ALWAYS fucking excluded from these conversations, and we’re tired of it. include us in planning so we can be included in life. that’s what we’re asking for, i don’t think it’s too much.

Sometimes I think abt Billie Joe Armstrong and I get so emotional. Does he know how many kids he gave the courage to come out as bisexual. How many people saw him and realized they were like him. Realized there were people like us and he told us what that was and it was Bisexual loud and proud and fuck you if you’ve got a problem with that

These images changed me

They released a song about dressing in drag and fucking men while dressed in drag in 1997. King For A Day is, was, and always will be an extremely radical song, a revolutionary song, I cannot stress this enough especially to people born in the mid 2000’s how incredibly DANGEROUS it was for this very popular punk band to release a song like this back then. Well into the mid 2010’s it was still incredibly rare for anyone to be out and proud somewhere it wasn’t safe. School, work, queer people hid. But in 1997, Green Day released a song about dressing in drag and fucking men.

Like, American Idiot contains the line “Maybe I’m the faggot, America”. People got ANGRY about it. Back then in 2004 when it was released it was because Green Day was “encouraging kids to be gay”. Now when people get angry it’s because they’re ignoring the history and the raw power behind that line, maybe I AM a faggot, fuck you, I like fucking dudes and I don’t care what you have to say about it. Yet I still see people trying to cancel a band made up of THREE BISEXUAL MEN for saying the word faggot.

I strongly suggest people read more about Green Day’s history in the queer community. Billie Joe Armstrong is the reason I even know what bisexuality IS. And that it’s what I am. They had bands like Pansy Division opening for them in the 90’s, they fucking FOUGHT people in the audience for being homophobic. Billie Joe can and will kick your ass while Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool act as his personal hype men and add sound effects with the bass and drums. It fucks.

It’s 2:30 in the morning idk where I was going with this my heart is full of love everyone say Thank you Billie Thank you Mike Thank you Tré. Blows a kiss for every other bisexual. Including myself. Goodnight

I was high as hell and extremely tired but I was right

Fun fact: We know the size of the Pokémon world because Scarlet and Violet has framerate issues

Video games tend to do this thing called “culling,” where they don’t render things that aren’t in use. In Breath of the Wild, there’s no reason for Link to be able to see how many apples are on a tree in Hateno when he’s all the way in Tarrey Town, or know how many Bokoblins are running around Hebra Mountain. Link has a radius around himself that spawns in people, enemies, items, etc, so that the player gets the full experience of a rendered world without the game having to keep track of 850 Hearty Radishes sparkling.

This is good.

Scarlet and Violet has really AGGRESSIVE culling. The devs knew the game was framey and did everything they could up until the last possible second to save on resources.

Image ID: A screenshot of Scarlet and Violet, zoomed so far out that you can see where things aren't rendered. Only a wedge of landscape is in view, alongside some very simplified rivers. End IDALT

The player has a single square that’s always rendered around them, which takes about 10 seconds to run across. Besides that, all that’s visible is whatever the camera is facing; if the camera can’t see it, it does not exist.

You might think that this would be good for performance, since the game isn’t calling as many assets constantly. And you would be right, if the things culled were ALL that the game was trying to render.

We all know at this point about the memory leak problem the game has, where it won’t toss garbage data it’s not using. This is supposed to account for the framerate drop; however, if it was ONLY the memory leak, it should start out smoothly, then decay over time until it’s unplayable.

So what gives?

Image ID: The player riding Koraidon, swimming in the Paldean ocean. End IDALT

This is the ocean.

It’s pretty. It’s got a tiny bit of reflection, some gentle waves, a nice gradient. A beautifully made ocean without repetitive textures is always nice.

Image ID: A screenshot of Scarlet and Violet, so far zoomed out that you can see the edges of the ocean, which extend about 20 times the length of the entire game map across its diameter. The ocean is a huge pale blue circle labeled "OCEAN," and Paldea is a tiny dark blue dot labeled "Unrendered Paldea." It all sits on a dark blue background. End IDALT

THIS IS THE OCEAN.

IT IS NOT CULLED.

Look at the SIZE of this thing! Paldea is an ANT in the middle of this puddle. It’s rendering ALL of this, ALL its sparkles and waves, ALL the time.

Now, this is usually the part of the post where I’m like “and because we know the size of the ocean, based on the coastlines and wind direction, we can figure out how big the rest of the planet is by comparison!” like I did with Breath of the Wild over a year ago.

No.

Another video game term you might not be familiar with is a “skybox.” Basically, to give the illusion of faraway objects, clouds, mountains, etc, and to hide the black void most 3D games are built in, games will have a texture wrapped around either the level or where the player is standing. For example:

Image ID: The Sacred Grove level from Twilight Princess, a foresty area, zoomed out and taken out of bounds to see the skybox. It's a pale blue and yellow texture wrapped around the area. End IDALT

This is a level from Twilight Princess called Sacred Grove. You normally can’t see the bottom parts of this, hence why it turns into a gray plane, but the parts you CAN theoretically see by looking through the trees are colored so you think you’re looking at a sky. You can see the edge of the void down in the bottom right corner.

Image ID: A screenshot of Twilight Princess' Hyrule Field, taken so far out of bounds that the void and background composition is in full view. The blue part in the center, where the sky texture is, is labeled "Skybox," and the black it sits in is labeled "Void." End IDALT

Here’s another one from Twilight Princess. You can see the different textures that stack on top of each other, as well as the blue skybox that’s centered around Link when he’s in the area. You, as the player, FEEL like you’re in a small part of a larger world, because the devs cleverly structured together elements you CAN see in other areas into the background.

More complicated versions of skyboxes, typically semi-circular, are called skydomes.

Image ID: A drawing made in MS paint, with a semicurcular blue dome encompassing a green plane and a red dot. The red dot is labeled "Player," the green plane is labeled "Level," the blue dome is labeled "Skydome," and the black background is labeled "VOID." End IDALT

They tend to look kind of like snowglobes, because you do not need to render anything that can’t be seen. There’s no situation in which the player should be able to fall lower than the level, so there’s no reason to render the dome into a sphere in the event that that happens.

In Scarlet and Violet, it would make sense for the skydome to end where the ocean does. There’s no situation in which the player manages to go past or underneath the ocean, so even if you wanted a gigantic ocean size like they have, you don’t need to use more sky to encompass that.

They did not get this memo.

Image ID: The edge of Scarlet and Violet's skydome, bright blue, with clouds above it and a night sky. End IDALT

You might be thinking to yourself “wow, that looks like the curvature of the Earth!”

Image ID: A tiny blue dot in a huge sphere of darker blue. The tiny dot is labeled "OCEAN," and the huge sphere is labeled "SKYSPHERE." It all sits on a black baground. End IDALT

AND YOU WOULD BE RIGHT!!!!!

Why is this here. Why is it so big. I can’t even see Paldea anymore. What exactly was planned for this.

Clever readers might have noticed that I labeled this “Skysphere” and not “Skydome.”

That’s because it for some reason is a sphere. Paldea is sitting in the middle of a fully rendered gigantic sphere in space. For some reason.

Image ID: A picture of Earth from space, with Spain surrounded by a red square. End IDALT

Look at Earth. Look at Spain, which Paldea is supposed to mimic.

Image ID: Earth with Spain surrounded by a rectangle, overlaid onto the ocean Paldea sits in. End IDALT

I overlaid Spain over Paldea and made them roughly the same size. Assuming the two to be 1:1, the OCEAN is bigger than Earth.

If I then take that size and apply it to the skysphere:

Image ID: A white circle and dot on a navy blue background. The circle is labeled "Paldean Sky Sphere," and the dot is labeled "THE EARTH!!!" End IDALT

HI. WHY IS THIS A THING.

The skysphere is bigger than the PROPORTION OF THE SUN TO THE EARTH:

Image ID: A picture of the sun with a little blue ball next to it labeled "Earth." End IDALT

I will be taking this as canon sizing until the Pokémon Company comes out and either CULLS this monstrosity and stops forcing our Switches to render THE SUN, or until the Pokémon Company comes out and gives us a canon planet size.

zortchgender:

To be completely honest, c2e73 is probably my absolute favourite episode of all time just because of the mechanical storytelling. Fjord is powerless. All he has is a whip and a dagger, and he’s proficient in those weapons but he doesn’t have modifiers to make them particularly effective. He’s built to be a hexblade warlock; he’s got max charisma and high constitution, but he doesn’t even get a plus one to his strength or dex.

But a giant fucking worm attacks his friends—snapping Jester up with its jaws, burrowing underground with an unconscious Beau between its teeth, swallowing Caduceus into its searing gullet—and Fjord charges directly at the danger, with nothing but sheer determination and a couple of weapons that he’s only kind of okay at using.

And it fucking works, Fjord deals max damage with the dagger as he flanks the worm to save Jester. Fjord climbs directly into the mouth of a worm to pull Caduceus free and is strong enough to grab hold of him. Fjord succeeds on multiple strength checks to keep the worm from getting away, which is pretty much the only reason that a Beau didn’t die in that battle. Fjord beats a contested strength check—a stat which has no modifiers in, again—against a giant fucking worm with a +7 to strength by rolling a natural fucking 19. It’s the definition of miraculous. It shouldn’t work at all.

But it works. Without magic, without tricks, without gimmicks. Fjord is powerless. He’s just a half-orc with second-hand weapons loaned to him by his friends; with a scar still fresh on his skin from where he plunged his own sword into his chest; with the same ever present fear that he’s useless without his powers, that he’s a liability, that he’s going to drag the party down and doom them all.

And so Fjord does what he’s always done. He digs his heels in, tightens his grip, and makes sure to keep his friends alive.
