I've recently fallen deeply in love with a particular sub-genre in K-Drama--Slice of Life. Shows like Reply 1988, Hospital Playlist (anything Shin-Lee really), My Mister, My Liberation Notes, Age of Youth, Dear My Friends, Our Blues, etc.

I love how this form of storytelling makes me think on life, shows deep character relationships that reflect real life, and just plain endears me to characters so much more than a lot of shows. A lot of moments are just friends enjoying each other's company, being stupid, etc. having deep family relationships (side characters serve more of a filled out role than just propping up the MC's conflicts).

But.....I've been trying to get back into American TV (I'm American, and it's what I mostly watched up until 2-3 yrs ago) and I've found that the main difficulty in doing so is bc, unlike SOL, everything is heightened, very conflict-centered, and characters are often rather extreme personalities (done that way since foils often increase tension).

Even sitcoms just kinda fall flat for me these days, bc their foundation isn't in nuanced characters that contemplate life, but maximizing humor/ joke per screen time (of all sitcoms I prob like New Girl & Schitt's Creek the best?). Dramas these days are often so dark, with staunch antiheros who have a lot of messed up relationships.

I do like watching darker shows as well, but I'd say my sweet-spot these days are....the more sweet ones 😅.

So wanted to ask for recs of ANY American TV shows that even come close to that vibe? I can think of like,,,The Fosters and This is Us, but even those don't quite de-dramatize it enough for me. Bonus points for any well-written shows or more recently-produced ones.

Thank ya!
