I'm 36M from Eastern Europe. I lived in Beijing and travelled to 60+ countries, so I'm not new to different cultures. Most of my favourite countries are developing ones (like Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Mexico, Peru).

I'm in India now and for the first time ever I'm thinking about cutting my trip short. This country is so inconvenient on so many levels.

I'm not a budget traveler, but also not a "resort" kinda guy. It feels like in India you either go budget or luxury, but mid-range is completely missing. I usually walk a lot exploring the city, but it's just so stressful here. Dirt, dogs, cows, beggars, sellers, scammers everywhere. No sidewalks, you literally have to walk between cars and tuktuks. Haggling with tuktuk drivers is a pain, Uber drivers simply don't show up, just try to collect the cancellation fee. Don't get me wrong, the sights are amazing, but when my visit comes to the end I get nervous that I have to go back to the streets.

I usually go for mid-range hotels, but in here the quality is beyond shitty. I choose the ones with above 8 rating on booking.com and they look great in the picture. Even more expensive hotels lack hot water and there's always at least one stain on the sheet and the towel.

Intercity travel is also a struggle. I try to avoid domestic flights or solo taxis for environmental reasons, train tickets are sold out and all that is left is buses. There are no bus terminals and travel agencies don't organize hotel pick-ups.

I'm used to paying more as a foreigner. But the record holder might be the modern art museum of Mumbai, where I paid 25 times what locals do. For a museum that doesn't even have a permanent exhibition, basically just a gallery for a (bad) temporary exhibition.

I always check the tipping policy before traveling to a country and happy to apply it. If I get a service worth tipping. That rarely happens in India. Taxi drivers try to shame me into tipping after an extra stop at a tourist trap or not even reaching the destination. Restaurant workers point out a dozen times that the service fee was not included.

Vendors keep following me and don't understand the word no. The touching is the worst. I can't stand when somebody touches me and tries to physically stop me so they can sell/beg/scam. I'm a calm person, but Indians get the worst out of me.

People in general act nice on the surface, but the communication and cultural gap is wider than I expected. I use CS to meet locals, usually just for a chat over a coffee, sharing travel stories and getting to know each other's culture. Well, in India it quickly turns into a charity case: how can I help them get "a Schengen visa" or "a job in the EU" or they simply just push me to pick up the bill after their expensive order at the restaurant. I never had an Indian CSer before and I feel I won't ever after this trip.

Am I getting old for solo traveling or do others have similar experiences in India? Are there any hacks that help shut out the bad things?

Looking to go to SE Asia by myself this June for about a month. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for the past 4-5 years, but this is the first real opportunity I’ve had to actually do it. I’m now 21 and I took a gap year before university to pursue my travelling but due to a certain pandemic it never happened.

I’m three years into a relationship and I love my girlfriend to pieces. We’ve never really argued much, but this has become something of a sticking point. She generally seems very reluctant for me to do this - partially because she knows I want to go by myself and not with her (which I completely understand) but I think it’s also because she really isn’t enjoying the thought of a month of very little contact with me. She knows it’s something I’ve been wanting to do ever since we got together, but because I’ve never really had the chance to do it we’ve just sort of swept it under the carpet.

I think in her ideal world I don’t go, and if I do, I make a considerable effort to call/text her while I’m out there. I’ve tried to be honest and I’ve said I can’t promise to talk to her much whilst I’m travelling. I don’t want to be that guy that’s talking to his girlfriend every other day whilst trying to meet new people and discover places. I feel like she’ll pretty quickly get used to not talking to me much, but I know that’s easy for me to say as I’m not the one being left at home.

Are either of us being unreasonable? Just want your opinions really, as I don’t know anyone who’s been in this position. If you think I’m being a dick I’d rather you told me!

Thanks all :)

Hi all,

I've been on the travelling for almost a year now since I left my job and wanted to provide tips for new solo travelers, especially for long term. Note: Take these with a grain of salt, I tend to be a last minute planner.

Its much easier saving beforehand than attempting to make money on the road. I also learned this the hard way. I had money saved, but planned on doing a working holiday in Australia after hearing how so many people have saved loads of money for travel. Again, this is possible, but you have to be diligent and honest about your plan. Yes, if you work on a farm, have live-in accommodation, and work 40-60 hr/week, surely you could stack up cash. If you plan to work in hospitality in a metro area, it wont unless you're just willing to actually work, and not have a 'holiday'. Extra tip, if you do a work holiday in Australia - take advantage shifts on the public holidays ($).

Hostels for a long time can be exhausting, split them up with Hotels or Private Rooms. Let me first say that hostels are fantastic for not spending a lot of money and the social aspect. However, I found my best approach was staying in a hostel for 6-7 nights and split with a hotel in between to 'recharge'. Doing hostels for extended period of time (i.e. 50-60 days in a row), gets very tiring. Sometimes you just need time alone and relaxation. Try to split up how you lodge (AirBnB, Hotels, and Hostels). A good in-between solution is private dorms in hostel.

Do not plan more than 2-3 months in advance. Your plans will change, guaranteed. You may think you want 2 months in Laos, 2 months in Singapore, and 2 months in Cambodia - but you get bored in Singapore after day 4. A good solution for this is to have a rough itinerary in mind, and when you book hotels or hostels, make sure they are cancellable. Flights are harder - but my personal solution is to leave short-haul flights for last minute (that aren't subject to big price fluctuations), and book your long haul flights a couple months in advance but only for certainty (i.e. your final return home flight or across continents).

Take multiple bank cards with you. Its wise to bring a debit and credit card, or multiple of each. Hide them in different places for yourself. I lost my debit card (multiple times, I am an airhead) by forgetting to take them from the ATM, as some ATM's in the world dispense cash first, and then your card. Also it is wise to find a card without international fees. Depending where you go, the country may operate in mostly cash. So a debit card will be absolutely essential. Using ATMs also tends to have a favorable rate compared to exchanges.

Pack LIGHT. I have a bad habit of accumulating things. I already sent two packages by sea back home to ensure that I have a light load to carry at all times. It is so much easier to lug small bags around if you're on the move. It's also easier to keep track of everything, and you don't have to worry about checking bags at airports (this can add up to be a lot of money). I carry a 32L backpack and a tote bag, the tote can often fit inside. Other times I carry a grocery bag with my 32L on my back, this raises less eyebrows with budget carriers.

Do not rely on budget estimates from travel blogs. It took me a while to learn that these are not very accurate. They often vastly underestimate spending, oversell how 'cheap' it is to travel elsewhere. That being said, if you plan on taking it easy/relaxing, - just spending on food and basic lodging - just 'living' in these locations, then sure these $20/day in Bali estimates may be accurate. But if you're wanting to do activities you set out to do, take transport, and splurge on occasion - budget at least 20-30% more. Either that, or I'm just not very diligent about my budgeting (a strong possibility). One other thing: the guide books tend to be more realistic than the Instagrammer's blog of 'how I live for $300 a month in the Maldives'.

It can get lonely at times! (More often that not) Most of the time when you're solo traveling, you will be alone. More often than not, can be in stressful situations alone without the comfort of a friend or SO. It's important you know yourself enough to realize when you need company and when you're okay to be by yourself. When you need the social aspect, hostels and meetups can be invaluable. This is especially important in countries with low levels of your native language.

Remember to Enjoy! You're traveling, and many people don't have the opportunity to do so. I would say my biggest regrets while traveling are when I don't take the opportunity to DO the thing I want to do. Of course you have to be conscious about spending, but if you're in Cairns, and are unsure if you want to do the Great Barrier Reef because it costs $200 to get there, you may regret it when you return home, especially if home is a 20 hour flight away from Australia.

I’ve traveled quite a bit over the last few years, up to 17 countries and 6 continents. A lot of it was solo in places like Europe, New Zealand, and done a few group trips or with friends also including Antarctica.

Every time I plan a trip I still have my mother complaining I’m going alone, and my father complaining that I didn’t invite him along.

  1. I’m single but old enough to make my own decisions about where I feel it’s safe to travel and if I want to go solo or not

  2. It would be a bit creepy/weird to go on a vacation with just me a 32F and my almost 60 year old dad, plus I don’t think we would get along. Would we share a hotel room? No thank you

Just looking for advice or if anyone else can relate. Planning to discuss with my therapist next week.

Edit: Guilted for solo travel or international travel or basically any travel that isn’t with my father

Edit 2: I refuse to travel with my dad even if we got 2 rooms, it’s not something I think works for our relationship. Dont assume everyone has a good relationship with their father like that. It’s more so the whining EVERY time I plan a vacation whether solo or with friends that I didn’t invite him. That’s not normal for that to be his first reaction EVERY time instead of excited or curious for me about a trip. Like he literally asks “why didn’t you invite me” and wants me to give an answer.

Edit 3: Tried to talk to my dad about my trip today more and he’s next comment was do I have a will? Cuz clearly I’m gonna die. No other questions about the trip.
