Greetings all.

Today’s selection comes with one of the most interesting pedigrees in all of 1960s rock and roll.

I first found my way to Bodine during my deep dive into the sounds of the Cowsills, since their one and only album was produced by Bill Cowsill (not long after his separation from his family’s group).

When I finally got my hands on a copy of Bodine’s self-titled 1969 album, I was surprised to see a couple of very familiar names in the credits, mainly Jim Lalor and Jon Keliohor, both of whom had been in Pacific Northwest folk rock pioneers The Daily Flash.

I’d had an import Daily Flash compilation in my crates since the mid 80s, and had in the ensuing years picked up both of their 45s (their sole output).

As it turns out, despite some great sounds and a ton of talent and promise, the Daily Flash had a hard time, and started to fall apart in the late 60s (lots more info here).

Doug Hastings was for a brief time a member of the Buffalo Springfield, Keliohor was involved with the Gentle Soul, and two group members were connected to Rhinoceros.

Bodine recorded its sole LP in 1969 with Cowsill at the board.

The album is quite good, touching on a host of late 60s threads, including country rock, slighty harder edged San Francisco sounds (reminding me of Kak) and even touching on funk at times.

‘Disaster’ – the album’s closing track – is a fast-moving track with some wild guitar with an anti-drug message. It’s the kind of track that would have made a great single,and might have gotten the band some well-deserved exposure.

As it stands, the band and their one album are both fairly (and unfairly) obscure, but definitely worth your time.

I hope the ne week finds you all well.

Bill Deal and the Rhondels are one of the preeminent examples of one of America’s most interesting (and lesser known) musical scenes, Beach Music.

Largely R&B/soul influenced music enjoyed by largely white audiences in the American coastal south (and played by largely white showbands, like Bill Deal and the Rhondels), Beach Music (and its most famous dance the Shag) is the closest analog to the UK Northern Soul scene here in the states.

The scene has it’s own popular tempo/sound, perennial groups (like the Drifters and the Tams), venues and collectors.

Deal and the Rhondels (with their drummer/vocalist Ammon Tharp) scored three national Top 40 hits May I, I’ve Been Hurt and What Kind of Fool) in the late 60s, all of which are cornerstones of the Beach Music sound.

The group recorded a wide variety of R&B/soul and pop sounds, and today’s selection leans in the latter direction.

Released in 1970, ‘Hey Bulldog’ (a cover of the Beatles song from Yellow Submarine) was the flipside of the Rhondels version of ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me’.

Their version of the song is delivered in a slightly mellower version than the original, but still with plenty of kick, including a nice bass line, some cool piano (by Deal) and cool backing vocals ad percussion.

The Rhondels (who had been together since 1959) broke up for the first time when Deal left the music business in 1983, but continued to reform and play until Deal’s death in 2003.

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is one of the greatest “out of left field” records I’ve ever come across.

Big thanks to my old buddy Keith Patterson who brought it to my attention a while back.

Buddy Greco, if you know the name at all, is best known as one of those swing-a-ding-ding, post-Sinatra crooners (and pianist) of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

He was a mainstay in Vegas and everywhere else supper clubs thrived.

Posessed of a confident baritone and good looks, he made a string of albums that stretched out over almost 40 years.

He recorded today’s selection, ‘Time’s a Wastin’ When Your Gone’ in 1965.

How he got his hands on the tune, which was composed by English keyboard player John Burch (who wrote both ‘Preach and Teach’ and ‘In the Meantime’ for Georgie Fame, I cannot say, but it was indeed fortuitous that he did.

The record is a stunning bit of hard-charging, beat adjacent sounds. The producer (Bob  Morgan) and arranger (Garry Sherman) were both straight up the middle mainstreamers, and the fact that they made a record like this, especially for Greco, suggests to me a deliberate attempt at mold-breaking.

Though I have no evidence in this direction, I wonder if Greco was recording over an existing, UK-based instrumental track. The drums and guitar are especially hard-hitting and the sound screams UK 1965.

Haven’t been able to find any other recordings of the song, either in the US or the UK.

That said, it’s a killer, and I hope you dig it.

If anyone has any more detailed information about the record, please let me know.
