What travel destination most exceeded your expectations?

I enjoyed reading comments on the “most meh destination” thread.

I’d love to hear about destinations you had low expectations for, that grossly exceeded them.

Mine was Ottawa.

We ended up there on a trip with extended family. I’d heard mostly negative things about it: it was sleepy, boring and not particularly worth visiting.

I really enjoyed it. The canals and walkways were beautiful in June. People were cruising around on boats having a good time. We felt totally safe walking around at night. Good cycling infrastructure with beautiful scenery. I enjoyed our tour of Parliament and a few other buildings. Stayed in a nice historic hotel for a very affordable rate. And while it wasn’t a foodie destination in the same way that other cities might be, we ate some great meals there.

What destinations totally exceeded your low expectations?

Adults only flights / adult only cabin? I recently had the opportunity of being part of a focus group from a major carrier and multiple participants threw this idea in the hat. I'm just curious, for those who travel without children, would this be something you'd consider if offered?

I failed at solo travel because of my anxiety

First of all, you guys are some brave mother fuckers!! I write this from the airport on my way home from my solo trip.

First the positives: I stayed in cool hostels and chatted with lots of nice friendly travelers. I enjoyed the country I went to and their hospitality. However, the entire trip I felt this overwhelming sense of anxiety about being alone in a foreign country that no amount of fellow travelers or friendly locals could fill. I ended up deciding to cut my trip short because my mental health was rapidly declining the longer I was away from my support system. This is actually my second time attempting a solo trip, and the other time turned out the same way.

I have traveled outside of the country multiple times before but always with friends or family and had a blast. It's the solo travel that I have a hard time with. I've always struggled with anxiety and solo travel really triggered it.

I guess I write this to say that solo travel isn't for everyone and that's probably okay. I would love to hear from some other people who have had a similar experience.

Edit: Thank you guys for all the supportive comments and sharing your experiences. It's helping me feel better about the whole thing. You are guys are the best 💜

Is it okay for a married person traveling solo to join a solo travel group?

This is going to seem like really weird question, but bear with me. My wife and I are empty nesters in our early-50s. My wife recently went on a solo trip to hang out with her sister in the Caribbean and had a great time. I stayed home in an empty house and was miserable. If my wife wants to travel solo again, I don't want to stop her. However, I also don't want to stay in an empty home alone again either. Despite my best efforts, there's really no one in my life I'm close enough to ask to travel with me.

I've seen several mentions of joining a group for solo travel, and I'm considering it. First, do these solo travel groups even allow a married person who's travelling without their spouse to join them? If they do, would this be really weird? Would other solo travelers in the group be uncomfortable? Should I just keep nurturing other family or friend relationships until I find someone willing and able to travel with me? All of my family members live several states away. My wife and I moved to this area a year ago, and in spite of my best efforts, I've been unsuccessful making close friends.

Plan on quitting my high paying job tomorrow to travel for 6 months. Struggling with final gut check.

Plan on quitting my job tomorrow and having huge second thoughts... I am disappointed in my lack of resolve. Has anyone experienced this? I am very calculated when it comes to financials and its really making this difficult.

About me: I am a 25M (almost 26) making 130k all in Chicago as a healthcare consultant. My assets are 150k in retirement accounts, 20k to travel, and 30k for savings to find a job when I get back. The problem is that I calculated what I am missing out on... when including my potential wages, the real cost of this trip is in the vicinity of 80k-110k. Lost income + travel budget which would put me so much closer to early retirement.

My trip is a 6 month plan between Solo in SE Asia (4 months), Meeting brother in Japan (2 Weeks), and meeting friend in Eastern Europe (2 months).

I apologize in advance if this at all seems out of touch, I understand I am very privileged. I come from parents who were low income growing up and I built a lot to get here. I have no safety net with family for this reason. Just need the final push... has anyone been in a similar spot? How did you deal with this?

Edit 2: Meeting is on my managers calendar for 12pm CT. Very nervous but know it's the right decision. Thank you again for all the support and shared personal experiences.

Edit 3: Job offered me a LOA when I was honest about plans and I took it. Come back on August 1st. Shout outs to everyone saying I should at least ask about it.
