I have been trying to land an entry level position in IT. I am currently working on a CS degree, but I have no relevant IT experience. I've put in close to a hundred applications with no callbacks. Until this week.

I was given an offer for jr help desk technician tier 1 with a government contractor for $28k +benefits. This is less than I was hoping to start out with. The commute will also be long, with odd hours. I was also offered Geek Squad Agent, which is down the street, but the pay is $30k. I am not sure which would be better for me to progress in an IT career. At the help desk role, I will have the title, but the pay is less than what I see others landing on here. Does Geek Squad hold any weight on a resume?

I am willing to take the $28k if it is better in the long run. With Geek Squad, I would probably have to get help desk after? The difference is I would now have relevant experience and hopefully, get a better offer at a help desk job. I am so torn, but ultimately, I want to do whatever will be best in the long run.

Edit: Thank you Redditors for helping me put it into perspective. General consensus is the help desk, and I agree. I think that's what my gut what was telling me. I am just so excited to get an entry level position. I definitely need the confidence boost, and I plan on learning as much as I can while I'm there.

Ideally, and internship would be better, but I haven't heard back from any that I've applied to. I can't travel to an internship, and there just weren't many in my area. My original goal was to go the SE route, but I find that I've enjoyed my IT type classes more. Programming ends up being a 24/7 thing for me, because I seem to lack the ability to put a project down. I'm feeling burnt out after the last two years of it.

  • r/mac - My dad’s macbook (2019 MacBook Air) has been consistently crashing daily for a long time and the guys at geek squad said that it’s nothing hardware based, is there anyone here who can glean anything off the crashlogs?
