Streets Of Philadelphia: Walking On Walnut Street On A Bright Saturday Afternoon In February
Walnut Street Philadelphia (between Rittenhouse Square and Broad Street) is the main shopping district of the city of Philadelphia (this area is part of Center City neighborhood of Philly). This area of downtown Philly can get very active during the weekends. It all starts with the farmers market on the Walnut Street side of Rittenhouse Square and ends with the Banana Republic store at the corner of Walnut and Broad. I visit this store once in a while just to admire the interior architecture.
This has been somewhat of a rainy, snowy and cloudy kind of winter so far. But this particular Saturday afternoon was bright and very cold. I started off by going around Rittenhouse Square itself.
I like the view of Center City from 19th and Manning Street (near the Marathon On The Square restaurant).
Then I started filming from the front of the Barnes and Nobles (18th and Walnut), and then started walking towards Broad Street. This section of Walnut Street is a great example of American resilience. It took two massive hits, went down, but stood right back up. Many of the shops and restaurants in this area were shutdown partially or completely most of last year. In addition this area was targeted heavily during the riots. You can still see the scars of the past, mostly next to the Pietro's Italian restaurant. The shops next to Pietro's (Van's, the McDonalds and the The Dr. Martens Store were looted and burnt). This section is still a construction zone.
I noticed that the Tiffany & Co. store has moved very close to Rittenhouse Square (it used to be nearer to Broad Street). There's a new Allbirds store right next to it. Urban Outfitters and the Free People store had people standing in line outside the store waiting in the cold to get in. The Capital One Café is also now open (I would feel a little shy and intimidated to discuss my precarious financial situation standing next to people sipping a $4 Cafe Latte!!). Expect this concept to disappear in the immediate future.
I was glad to see the New Balance Philadelphia store open. New Balance is one of my favorite bands (A small number of their shoes are still made in America, something I like to support and encourage). I also visit the Shakespeare & Co bookstore once in a while. It is basically a nice cafe that also sells a few books. Their old school display facing Walnut Street always has biographies of celebrities and politicians that I make sure I don't read.
The Apple Walnut Street store is close to the New Balance store. Most of the time there is a police car and security outside this building. This was also the spot where a police car was burnt back in June 2020. I always stop for a few minutes at the L'OCCITANE EN PROVENCE store in front of the Apple Store. The smell coming out of that store is fantastic. The one very modern looking building on Walnut Street is the one where the The Cheesecake Factory is. There is pizza place next to this restaurant called "&pizza; - Rittenhouse". This is one of my favorite pizza place in the city.
I took a big U Turn when I reached Broad Street and walked back home through Chestnut Street.
