The Newshour Debate: Celebrating assassins - Part 1 of 3
A major political row has erupted over Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) backed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee's (SGPC) move to honour late General Arun Shridhar Vaidya's assassins and refer them as martyrs. Vaidya as the Army Chief in 1984 had designed and supervised the controversial Operation Bluestar. In 1986, he was shot dead by pro-Khalistani militants. The duo, who killed him was sentenced to death for the killing but the SGPC's action has raised serious questions. Should the Punjab government stay quiet over the issue at a time when the nation is battling the re-emergence of pro-Khalistani forces? In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Lt General (retd) KS Brar, Commander, Operation Blue Star; Kiranjot Kaur, Member & Former Gen Secy, SGPC; Arvind Khanna, Vice President, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee; Manjit Singh GK, Leader & President, SAD (Delhi Unit); Amrinder Singh, Former Member, SGPC; Brig (retd) Israr Rahim Khan, Commanding Officer 10 Guards Battalion, Operation Blue Star and Brigadier (retd) V Mahalingam -- discuss whether it is time to act tough on those who are trying to revive the ghost of terror in Punjab.

He said, he had come to the conclusion that only Congress could save the Punjab from the disaster the Akali-BJP government had pushed it into. They said, Mr Sawhney had joined the party without any condition. Speaking on the occasion Mr Sawhney said, the BJP had failed his expectations and that of the party workers. He said, he had tirelessly worked for twenty years for the BJP but at the end of the day he was let down and punished for speaking the truth. He said, his only dream was that Batala should be made a district and the Congress leaders had promised him to make it a district when the Congress forms the government. Replying to questions of the reporters he said, he was disappointed that the BJP did not do anything to get district status for Batala. He said, the party had let down all its cadres as it had failed to deliver and come to their expectations.

Former chief minister and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh while condemning the attack on Lt Gen (retd) Kuldeep Singh Brar in London on Sunday has said that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was creating a situation by raising memorial that old wounds were not healing. Holding that his position on Operation Bluestar was too well known to everybody in or outside Punjab which he did not need to repeat (Amarinder had resigned from his membership of parliament and Congress party in protest against army operation), Amarinder said that the attack on Gen Brar was highly condemnable and those guilty of it must be brought to book.

'Rape of Democracy' ............. Captain Amrinder
With the Akali government getting the papers in 9 of the 13 wards rejected arbitrarily in Valtoha Nagar Panchayat, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today said that this amounted to rape of democracy and announced that the party will be moving the court on Monday. Referring to the arbitrary rejection of the nomination papers of the Congress supporters across the state, Capt Amarinder also warned the officials responsible for conducting the elections against any unlawful acts lest they have to account for it. He said, the officials must not buckle under the Akalis' pressure and must do their duty strictly according to the law and rules. The Punjab Congress President said that it is highly unacceptable and the party will not tolerate it. He said, while the matter will be taken up in the court of law, the party will also hold public protests and demonstrations wherever there are any such wrong doings. He said, besides Valtoha, the Akalis have got rejected the papers of Congress supporters in Faridkot, Kotkapura and other places also. He maintained that this only showed that the Akalis did not have confidence in themselves and hence they were resorting to arbitrary and undemocratic methods.

According to figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau, in Punjab, 81 cases were registered for female foeticide while for Rajasthan the corresponding number was 51. Madhya Pradesh registered 21 cases, Haryana 18 and Chattisgarh 24. In Rajasthan, the number of cases registered has shown a steady decline since the last three years with 25, 16 and 10 cases being registered in 2006, 2007 and 2008, minister of state for Health Dinesh Trivedi said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi in Orai (UP)
On the second day of the fifth phase of his campaign for Congress for the upcoming assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh All India congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi assured that he will not leave the state until he ensures that positive changes are made in Uttar Pradesh. "Elections will come and go, but I am here to ensure that positive changes are made in UP and I will not leave the state till then," he declared. Addressing a mammoth rally in Orai in Jalaun district. "Your people go to Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab and contribute for development there. When all other states are surging ahead, Uttar Pradesh slips backwards. Both Elephant and Cycle come to you only during the elections time. For three times you elected the Cycle. Did you get anything?" asked Rahul Gandhi and the crowd answered with a roaring no. "These parties looted the funds meant for the poor. Rampant corruption is seen across the state. Now this is the time to change these state of affairs" said Rahul Gandhi.
