Rules & Standards

<_Back_Main_Index

Standards

  • r/CryptoCurrency is an independent Reddit community. While anyone can make suggestions in r/CryptoCurrencyMeta, ultimately rule creations and revisions will be decided by the mod team. If anyone is unhappy with this arrangement, they are free to visit competing subreddits such as r/CryptoCurrencies or r/Altcoin if they prefer.
  • r/CryptoCurrency was established as a subreddit for people who believe in the value of the blockchain and the cryptocurrency space as a whole. Maximalists, “one superior coin”, and “our coin is best” folks should head to their own coin specific subreddits, see our directory.
  • Behavior such as constantly promoting one coin, attacking another, or general negativity will not be tolerated. As a guideline, this would include activities such as making 10 or more positive comments about a coin in an hour or dozens of comments in a single thread.
  • Ban durations for users:
    • Depending on the circumstances surrounding the violation or unless otherwise noted in the specific rule, bans will go by the following minimum punishments:
    • Minimum Ban: 7-days.
    • Repeat Offense: 30-days.
    • Second Repeat Offense: Lifetime ban.
  • Punishment for Projects/Communities:
    • At times, the behaviors of communities and projects is problematic as a whole, or systemically encouraged by their official representatives, influencers, or moderators. Official teams, foundations and moderators are responsible for the actions of their community. In such cases, we have to levy punishments against projects and not just specific users. If we feel these actions are required, the minimum punishments (unless otherwise noted in the rules) are:
      • First offense: Site/topics are greylisted for a period of one-hour after submission, or subject to mod approval.
      • Second offense: Sites/topics are greylisted for a period of 12 hours and are not subject to mod approval.
      • Third offense: Sites/topics are blacklisted for a minimum of 1 month. The moderator team will use their judgement to decide the full duration of the ban.
    • In the event that the behavior stems from official representatives of the community the moderators may choose at their discretion to permanently blacklist discussion of that project.
    • If the moderators have a problem with a community, we expect their representatives to be available by modmail. If we cannot reach their representatives who work with us to pursue corrective and preventative measures, we will take action at our sole discretion.
    • Communities who have been greylisted or blacklisted will only have their status overturned, if a member of their official dev team is appointed as a point of contact and reaches out to the r/CryptoCurrency mod team via mod-mail.
  • Circumvention of any rule, or rule enforcement can result in permanent removal from the community.

NOTE: Many complaints have been made claiming the r/CC rules are overly complex. While they are extensive, please know that every specific rule on this page was born out of necessity given first-hand experiences the mod team has had. Since users have a financial incentive to abuse/exploit our subreddit, extra measures need to be taken to counter this unique challenge.

Expanded Rules

Rule 1 - Core Principles

  1. Behave with civility and politeness. Lead by example and treat others as you yourself would like to be treated.
  2. The overall goal of r/CryptoCurrency is to give a fair voice to all crypto projects, as we believe in the space entirely. We do not support the “one coin above others” mentality.
  3. Threads or posts which personally attack or otherwise harass specific people or users are strictly prohibited, more info here.
  4. Do not use offensive, racist, bigoted, homophobic, misogynistic, etc language, more info here
  5. No Trolling. Do not make random off-topic and/or controversial comments with the intent of baiting or provoking unsuspecting readers to engage in hostile arguments.
  6. No posts or comments which aggressively attack or make biased statements. This content does not promote quality discussion (Example: "That coin sucks, it has no future!").
  7. Posting unfounded rumors without citation, or other such false news, will result in a minimum 30-day ban.
  8. Sites that knowingly post poorly cited or unqualified news, or failing to make redactions, will result in a a ban of that site.
  9. Do not evade bots, AutoMod, filters, limits, or other rules. Doing so will result in an extensive or permanent ban.
  10. The mods can limit content from any user or individual who is destructive to the greater community.
  11. Also, please review the following:

Rule 2 - Spam

  1. To mitigate abuse from throwaway accounts, a minimum of 50 comment karma with 30-days account age is required for comments and 500 comment karma with 60 days account age for submissions. The latter requirement can be bypassed if the user buys a special membership.
  2. Users can only make a maximum of three posts per 24 hours, ie. link-posts, text-posts, or polls. Comments are not limited at this time.
  3. Users can only post content from a specific domain, news source or social media outlet once per 24 hours.
  4. Text posts with less than 500 characters will be removed and redirected to the daily discussion thread.
  5. Text posts with the sole goal of linking to third-party links, or circumventing any whitelist, greylist, or blacklist will be removed. Users purposefully doing this will be banned for 30-days on first offense, or lifetime on second offense.
  6. No reposting of duplicate or similar content whether it's news articles or text-posts. Duplicate content cannot be re-posted for a minimum of one month. First violation will result in a warning. Repeat offenses may result in a 30-day ban. Blatant violations where it appears the OP is farming moons will result in permanent ban for new users.
  7. Bots can not be deployed in r/CryptoCurrency without prior authorization from the mod team. Do not use bots posting content or for coin tipping. You must contact the mod team first. You can find more info here.
  8. In accordance with this poll, the post limit per coin in the top 50 will be dynamically determined by the following algorithm: # of posts allowed = floor(10*R*(1+R-0.7)). R is the ratio of a coin's market cap to the total market cap. For posts about coins not included in the top 10, there will be a simple 2 post limit.
  9. Self-Promotion content from accounts which do not engage with the community is not allowed. As a rule, an account should have 3 comments for every post.
  10. Posting referral, promo links, or codes of any kind is strictly prohibited and will be met with a long-term or permanent ban. This includes "PM for referral", asking for referral codes or links, and linking to sites that are used solely for referral links.
  11. Posts listing items for sale or advertise job listings, eg "WTS Ledger wallets", "Hiring JavaScript developers", etc or not allowed. Use subreddits like r/CryptoTrade, r/BitMarket or r/jobs4bitcoin instead. Listings will be removed and users will be warned. Repeat offenses will result in a ban.
  12. Linking to a tweet is rarely considered a standalone post. As such, posts to Twitter are greylisted and will only be approved at the discretion of moderators.
  13. No linking to sites which use visitors' system resources to mine cryptocurrencies. This includes JavaScript miners. Any such sites will be blacklisted, and users linking to them will receive a lifetime ban.
  14. Promotion of trading groups, courses, signal groups, or other trade groups is prohibited. Violations will result in a lifetime ban and the sites will be blacklisted.

Rule 3 - Manipulation

  1. Vote manipulation and brigading are against subreddit and site-wide rules. You should not solicit votes or comments in any way, from any platform. Please note simply linking a Reddit post will be interpreted as an implicit solicitation of votes. A lifetime ban will be given to the user responsible for the linking. Moderators from said community must, under Reddit’s site-wide rules, remove the posts resulting in brigading. If they fail to do so and do not work with the r/CryptoCurrency mods to resolve these issues, their project will be blacklisted for a minimum of three months. Please see this wiki page about vote manipulation for more information and a FAQ section.
  2. Do not solicit upvotes, instruct others to vote a certain way, offer votes to others, reply to others who are offering upvotes, or coordinate voting activity with others.
  3. Any vote manipulation which is supported by a projects’ official members will result in a blacklisting of said project for a minimum of three months.
  4. All links to r/CryptoCurrency must use the no-participation link format(replace www sub-domain with np). This prevents votes or comments from those following the link.
  5. Posts should only be cross-posted into r/CryptoCurrency from other subs and not the other way around. You should not cross-post, link, or promote an r/CryptoCurrency post on other subs or other social channels. Doing so helps to prevent brigading. If a team wishes to promote an announcement or update about their project, all social promotion should be directed to a post in their own subreddit or outlet and not in r/CryptoCurrency.
  6. No pumping, shilling, or FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt).
  7. Criticism and skepticism is encouraged. Posts which are overwhelmingly positive or are suspected of astroturfying in the comment sections, will be sorted by most controversial comments first as per our Quality Discussion Policy.
  8. No astroturfing. Do not use sockpuppet accounts to manipulate votes or project a narrative. Do not promote something you have a professional connection to without disclosing it. Crypto industry professionals should consider using our verification program.
  9. If you are allowed to assign yourself custom user flair, do not abuse this privilege such as inserting more QC points than what you actually earned. For example, "Platinum | QC: CC 59310593". Temporary bans will be issued depending on the severity of the abuse.

Rule 4 - Giveaways, Donations, and Illegal Activity

  1. Do not incite or encourage illegal activities. Promoting leaks, buying/selling drugs, tax evasion, pyramid schemes, etc will be removed and will result in a lifetime ban.
  2. No malware, spyware, phishing, or pharming links. This will result in a lifetime ban.
  3. Do not post addresses, host giveaways, link to giveaways elsewhere, or seek donations without prior approval from the mod team. Given the past history of abuse with this type of content, pre-approval will only be granted under exceptional circumstances. For more guidance on giveaways, read the policy wiki page.
  4. Do not post surveys, as they are often used to steal user information. This will result in a lifetime ban.
  5. The revealing of users personal information (‘doxxing’) or targeting of specific users, including public figures (‘witch-hunting’) is strongly prohibited and in many jurisdictions illegal. Users engaging or encouraging this activity will receive a lifetime ban. Official figures, moderators, project contributors, or community influencers encouraging this will result in the entire associated project being blacklisted for a minimum of three months.

Rule 5 - Content Standards

  1. If a submission is not likely to be of interest to anyone outside of a specific cryptocurrency, it will be removed and the author asked to resubmit in a more appropriate sub.
  2. No self-story posts unless they relate to industry wide cryptocurrency news and/or analysis. Self-story posts like "my dad bought bitcoin", "I sold all my coins to buy a truck", etc., are not allowed. When posting a self-story as a comment, please provide concrete proof in the comment or via modmail if requested.
  3. Weekly, monthly, quarterly or other time based “round-ups”, “updates” or “what happened this week” posts which are not industry wide or not posted at a weekly interval, will be removed.
  4. Videos which are opinions, updates, or weekly re-caps will be removed.
  5. Crypto-only news sites must employ journalistic standards which include: no anonymous writing staff, cited sources, no reprinted information, no aggregation. Sites not meeting these standards will be blacklisted.
  6. Opinion pieces are only accepted if they meet the citation and research burden which would be expected of an academic piece written at an early college level.
  7. Simple price speculation posts are not allowed. This includes posting portfolios and new price movement of a coin. Technical/charting analysis will be allowed depending on the quality.
  8. Include sources. All articles must provide sources of the content provided on links to news websites. Low-quality articles, plagiarism, and speculative content will be removed. If the content in the articles is not concrete, then the authors must make that clear.
  9. Questions and discussions which only belong in the daily discussion thread include: "rate my portfolio", "what coin should I buy?", “shill me a coin", "low-market cap coins", self-stories, etc.
  10. Partnership posts are only allowed if they are posted by the official source (the partner), the partner is a Fortune 500 company, unicorn startup, or official entity of a G20 country, and the integration is live and on the main chain (i.e. not on a fork based on the chains technology). For more guidance on partnerships, see here.
  11. Posts about hackathons, incubators, idea labs, innovation labs, or other building competitions using specific blockchain technology are not allowed, unless project in question is hosting their own hackathon with a reward.
  12. No misleading comparison charts which clearly cherry-pick data.
  13. No exchange/wallet support or exchange listings. This includes displaying wallet usage.
  14. No memes or any other direct links to media content(images, gifs, videos). IF it is a meme, please post it to r/CryptoCurrencyMemes instead.
  15. No public figures posting about coins on social media.
  16. No posts about individuals joining companies, boards, foundations, etc. Exceptions may be granted if these individuals are prominent mainstream figures (Example: Bill Gates or Mark Carney).
  17. No pre-announcements or announcement teasers for things that have not yet taken place.
  18. No announcements about projects being accepted into research groups, open partnerships, incubators, accelerators, startup hubs, or exhibitions.
  19. No posts about changes to logos, brand elements, or names which do not include other major newsworthy changes.
  20. No announcements of investments in coins, teams, projects or foundations, unless it is by a Fortune 100 company or a top 50 VC firm.
  21. No guides on buying, configuring, mining, or trading specific coins. These are best kept in a coin specific subreddit.
  22. No announcements of companies accepting a new coin type for a payment, unless it is a Fortune 100.
  23. No proof of concept announcements, announcements of minor specs, or standards changes.
  24. No announcements or demos of hardware releases, unless the hardware is new for the entire space. ATMs, point-of-sale devices, hardware wallet integrations, and mobile wallet updates are better suited for coin specific subreddits.
  25. Poor quality content typically characterized by low character count, all caps, bad spelling, incorrect grammar, missing punctuation, or banal wording will likely be removed.
  26. Ads disguised as posts are not allowed. However, new crypto businesses or projects can introduce themselves with a single detailed text-post, as well as make posts for major updates. Posts disguised as ads which are not for an introduction or major update may result in a minimum 30-day ban for the author and companies or projects posting this way may be greylisted or blacklisted.
  27. Link posts to paywalled articles will be removed unless the paywall features an easy to notice and use cryptocurrency payment option. As per the passing of CCIP-036
  28. Comments under Serious tagged posts must adhere to higher standards as outlined in our Policy.

Rule 6 - Personal Information

  1. Do not reveal personally identifying information(PII), otherwise known as doxxing yourself. Divulging how many coins you own can make you a target of hackers and identity thieves.
  2. Do not doxx other redditors, even if they engaged in an illicit activity. Report them to the mods instead. Find more info here.
  3. These rules are considered Reddit-wide rules, and in many jurisdictions are a criminal offense. Any such cases will be reported to the Reddit Admins, and possibly relevant authorities.

Rule 7 - Content Theft

  1. Do not steal content, also known as scraping or plagiarizing.
  2. Submitting links to blogs or news sites which steal content will result in suspension or permanent ban.

Rule 8 - On Topic Discussion

  1. All content must relate to cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, or other related topics in the crypto-sphere.
  2. Ideological content about politics are considered non-constructive, off-topic, and will be removed. Exceptions will be made for analysis of political events and how they influence cryptocurrency.
  3. Crypto-celebrity stories which do not directly relate to cryptocurrency will be removed. This includes attacking crypto critics for matters unrelated to crypto or finance.
  4. Videos of cryptocurrency debates between celebrities is allowed if there is reasonable substance.
  5. Top level comments should be directly related to the thread and should not be used as an opportunity to promote something unrelated to the thread discussion.

Rule 9 - Suitable Titles and Flairs

  1. Titles must be in English.
  2. No URLs in titles.
  3. Titles considered to be clickbait will be removed and users will be banned for a minimum of 7 days. If the clickbait is from the site, it will be greylisted.
  4. Match the title of the article you are linking to. Titles like "BREAKING", "Breaking News", "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT", and similar are not allowed. If the linked title already includes something like this, please remove it before posting.
  5. Use accurate and appropriate link-flairs. Misuse of link-flairs might result in post removal. See here for link-flair descriptions.

Rule 10 - Communicate With the Mod Team

  1. Report rule violations. Do not assume someone else will report it. The rules are only as good as they are enforced. Mods cannot be everywhere at once so it is up to the community to report rule violations when they happen.
  2. Do not submit meta posts about community issues in r/CryptoCurrency. Instead, post the issue on r/CryptoCurrencyMeta or message the modmail with any concerns you have.
  3. Misrepresenting your interactions with the mods or the circumstances of your ban or post removal may result in a ban, ban extension, or permanent ban. This includes posts outside of r/CryptoCurrency.
  4. If you wish to have your subreddit or website listed in our sidebar, please review our sidebar listing policy first. If you meet our standards, message the modmail.
  5. AutoModerator is equipped to detect signals of subreddit manipulation. Detection may result in the assignment of “controversial” flairs until the case is reviewed by a human mod. Actions such as removal or locking comment sections have a concrete rationale behind them. If you believe an action has been taken incorrectly, please message the modmail.
