EDIT: All right guys, we're closing up shop. Thanks for all your questions today, and be sure to enjoy Starforge when it drops tomorrow! The trilogy is complete at last!
Who am I? Hello again Reddit! As you may have gathered from the title, I am Max Florschutz, author of Science-Fiction and Fantasy novels, here to celebrate tomorrow's launch of the ninth book to bear my name and the conclusion to an epic Sci-Fi trilogy: Starforge! I'll be answering questions until about 5 PM MST!
That's the short of it. The long of it? Well, I'm still an author of Science-Fiction and Fantasy, so that doesn't change. But I'll give you a bit more backstory. My first book, One Drink, was published in 2013, making next year the ten-year anniversary of my career as an author. It was followed a short time later by a sequel, Dead Silver, and from there by numerous other books, including Colony, the first book in the UNSEC Space Trilogy that will reach its titanic conclusion when Starforge releases tomorrow!
I'm also known for running Being a Better Writer, a weekly writing guide answering all sorts of common questions about writing (and if you ask a common writing how-to question, I may just drop you a link) each Monday on my website. You can also check out that site (Unusual Things) for writing samples, free stuff, and preview chapters of each of my books.
My Proof: Obligatory website link!
Full list of books so far, in publication order:
One Drink
Dead Silver
Unusual Events: A "Short" Story Collection
Colony (UNSEC Space 1)
FINAL UPDATE: Stormed through a few more questions! I'm signing off now. I've lurked and submitted stories to Reddit for around a decade and the questions didn't disappoint. Hope you enjoy the book should you decide to get hold of a copy! Thank you all and enjoy the rest of your holiday!
UPDATE: Thanks Reddit! I'm going to turn in now. Happy Thanksgiving for tomorrow if you're in the US. I'll try to answer any remaining questions tomorrow while you're tucking into roast turkey or whatever you're doing! You can find me on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Ananyo) (for now at least).
Hi Reddit! Iāve been a science journalist for almost two decades but 'The Man from the Futureā' is my first bookāand itās now an Amazon science book of the year! I first came across JVN during a high school computer science class. We were learning about the von Neumann architecture, the standard design for almost all computers today. But his nameās come up repeatedly since thenāeven more so recently and in wildly different contexts. I knew right from the get-go I didnāt want to write a standard biography. Instead, I focus on his ideas, which helped seed the modern world. So please do ask me about Johnny, math, science journalism, writing books or pretty much anything. Cheers! I am Felix Flicker, a condensed matter physicist who believes this science can show us magick in the world around us, with a sprinkling of influence from Ursula K Le Guin, Philip Pullman and Douglas Adams.
The modern term for wizardry is condensed matter physics. It is the study of the world around us - the states of matter and how they emerge from the quantum realm. Thanks to its practical magic we can make lasers which cut through solid metal, trains which hover in mid-air, and crystals which light our homes. It is one of the best-kept secrets in science.
My book, The Magick of Matter will revolutionise what you know about physics and reality. Ask me anything about: ā¢ superconductors ā¢ quantum computers ā¢ crystals ā¢ particles which cannot exist outside of crystals ā¢ emergence ā¢ the four elements ā¢ why there are really an infinite number of states of matter, not four ā¢ magic, both real and forbidden ā¢ spells you can cast yourself
I am a lecturer at the School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University. I hold a masters in Theoretical Physics from the Perimeter Institute ā which I attended during Stephen Hawking's tenure ā and a PhD from the University of Bristol. I am the author of The Magick of Matter.

[TW: specific misophonia triggers will be discussed in this post]
Hi! Iām a graduate student at The Ohio State University. I both have and study a lesser-known condition called Misophonia.
A new consensus definition of Misophonia describes it as āa disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or stimuli associated with such sounds, [which] are experienced as unpleasant or distressing and tend to evoke strong negative emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses that are not seen in most other people.ā Feel like you want to scream when someone is chewing food or clicking a pen? Thatās this!
Iāve published work showing the wide variety of sounds that can be bothersome in misophonia. Recently, Iāve demonstrated underlying brain differences in how certain regions are connected ā challenging current views and providing a foundation for future research. You can check that out (as well as a plethora of recent research on the condition) here!
You can also find me on an NPR episode of All Sides with Ann Fisher and a soQuiet Science Session.
Ask me anything about misophonia!

Edit1: Thanks for all these questions! Taking a break before I leave for a meeting, but I'll be back to answer more later :)
Edit2: This has been super fun, thanks everyone! I think I'm off for the night, but I may or may not pop back in in the next day or two...
I've been a ghostwriter for nearly a decade now and have written over fifty books in both fiction and non-fiction. I've collaborated with literary agents, traditional publishers, celebrity clients, and am affiliated with a variety of ghostwriting marketplaces and agencies. I was recently featured in NPR for my work with famous clients, which I'll link below. I've got a tiktok account where I talk shop about ghostwriting @glittering_ghostwriter and I recently set up a subreddit for those interested in the industry r/ghostwritingguide
In addition to the obvious service of ghostwriting books, I also design plots, do line and developmental edits, and book doctor finished manuscripts. Obviously I can't share everything about my job considering I sign a lot of NDAs. But I'm happy to shed some light on what is normally a very mysterious industry! https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2022/09/21/celebrity-memoir-ghostwriters
