Boycotting a Country for Travel?

So, I've seen a lot of subs that have had extensive debates about the ethics of going to Qatar for the World Cup. I never did consider going but it was mainly because I'm not a die-hard soccer fan and the location didn't seem overly appealing for tourism.

Anyway, there has been a lot of talk mentioning that people shouldn't go because of how the country has treated the migrant workers from neighboring poorer countries that built these stadiums and infrastructure. There has also been recent posts about the conditions of the "Fan Camp" that Qatar set up for soccer fans.

So, it led me to this question. Has anyone refused to go or will refuse to go to a country because of its policies, government, human rights conditions, environmental practices, or anything like that? Or, are you someone that believes that not many countries have their hands clean?

Take safety out of the equation for this and pretend it was safe to go anywhere that had morally questionable beliefs/practices.

I personally have a mixed stance on this. I am someone that believes a lot of countries have blood on their hands. However, certain policies would make me avoid said country until they were to change.

Some examples would be Saudi Arabia having a complete ban on alcohol. I think I would need alcohol access to truly enjoy a destination. Others may say their history in foreign affairs should be reason enough alone not to go.

Another one I'd point out is North Korea. Again, this may be one people would boycott because of the current regime. Me, I think I'd avoid it mainly because you can't travel within the country without a guide and the laws seem to be more authoritarian than most parts of the world. Just don't think I'd feel comfortable there.

Then, there are places that I just don't think would make a good visit at this time. Two of these examples would include Ukraine because of the war and Haiti because of the instability and kidnappings happening in the country. But again, these are more safety conditions and lack of desirability than a boycott.

There are scary people in the world, but there are also helpful people out there.

Edit: I’m loving reading these wholesome stories of people helping each other out! ❤️

Edit: I removed my own story since the post blew up and I’m paranoid about anonymity!

But TLDR; I got drugged in Budapest*, probably by some new guy I met during a bar crawl. 2 random girls got me home to safety.

Solo Travel is a psychedelic experience.

So I’m not sure what the general opinion is here on psychedelics, I assume a handful have done them and most haven’t but that doesn’t matter. Psychedelics have been shown to incur a feeling of an expansion of consciousness or the mind, which I think is a perfectly apt metaphor for solo travel.

In my experiences, when I travel solo, I’m usually thrown into experiences I would never otherwise imagine myself being in. Similar to a ‘trip’, if I resist and keep trying to make things ‘perfect’, I have a miserable time.

But if I go with the flow, however, I’m usually rewarded with a wonderful memory, a feeling of pure bliss and freedom. I’ve learned that in most situations, things turn out fine in the end as long as I trust in the universe and in my self.

Also, travel has definitely made me expand my mind in more ways than one. One of my favourite ‘side effects’ of solo travel is that it actually strengthened my relationships with people back at home. Even when I was travelling a bunch and I didn’t see them often, I had a newfound appreciation of them.

Before I ventured on journeys, my whole world was limited to my immediate circle. We are all quite alike but I chose instead to focus on our differences, leading me to be annoyed by the choices some of my friends and family make.

However, when I travelled I met people from all over the world, who come from such vastly different backgrounds, who may not even speak the same language - and yet I managed to find common ground, and to relate to them with our shared humanity.

This perspective shift from ‘we are different’ with my group of friends to ‘we are all more alike than we believe’ helped me to be a more empathic and understanding human being.

Anyway just thought of this on the bus ride home and wanted to share. In 4 days I’m going on a short 2 and a half week trip, my first in almost 3 years, and I can’t wait! Much love everyone :)

How useful do you find travel blogs?

There are certainly some good blogs out there which are a fantastic source of ideas and information, but only really at a more regional level, and only if you dig past the first pages of results which seem to have more effort put into the search engine optimization than content.

The vast majority that try to cover multiple countries seem to be either ‘Stock images and generic text which makes you wonder if the writer has ever been to the same continent’ or ‘My 3 day visit to country-X where I went to the same spots and took the same photos as every other blogger’, with both cases featuring as many affiliate links as they can stuff in.

On a more positive note are there any that you recommend? Anywhere in the world if you think it is interesting to someone.

There was a similar post on here - but that was 4 years ago, so maybe something changed (unlikely to be honest) or there are some new opinions.

Travel more or settle down? Early 30s, feeling lost.

Hello,

I'm 32/M from Canada who just came back from 8 months of solo travelling and I quite enjoyed what felt like a trip of a lifetime (I went to 10 countries!). I loved adventures I had, the people I met, the cultures I embraced. I honestly adored the person I was while travelling - just so open and receptive to everyone and everything. I'm struggling now with this strong desire to return abroad long-term (possibly doing a working holiday or immigrating somewhere in Europe, New Zealand, etc) or start settling down where I'm at. While I have a well-paying job and a great support system, life in Canada just seems ever increasingly like a losing rat-race. All of my friends are starting to get high paying jobs, homes, getting married, etc. All of them seem to have no desire to go anywhere else. And I just feel like I am on the opposite end - where I am not satisfied with my life here, and just want to go abroad and reinvent myself. However, this desire to leave is not always so clear. I do on other days see the appeal of settling down and having a comfortable place to call my own, pets, a partner, and a stable job to fund a settled life with the occasional vacation. But I just can't seem to figure out a way forward that doesn't feel utterly daunting.

I'm scared of quitting my stable job with a possible global recession looming. I'm afraid if I leave, a future self might really regret not having invested into a settled life here. Starting off completely anew (both professionally and socially) in a new country is both simultaneously exciting and scary.

I'm not really sure what my question is exactly, it's just that I'm feeling really lost unsure how to proceed. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this same dilemma?

Travel advice not often found online

What's some lesser known travel advice you have that doesn't come up often in these subs or online? I'll add in my own 2 pennies, if you know any others feel free to add on in the comments.

. pack Sim card keys - especially useful when travelling abroad and you need data - even if you have a Sim card key I recommend putting in your new sim in front of the person that sold it to you, I've had an instance that my new sim card didn't work despite the clerk insisting that i had a locked phone. Albeit my phone was not locked and after half an hour of trying they tried a different sim card that worked on the spot.

**Edit to add e-sims have come up a lot in the comments which is something I had no prior knowledge about but seem like a good alternative to normal sim cards

.Don't be afraid to ignore people/ tell someone to go away - in some places you might stand out as a tourist, you'll probably notice an usually high amount of locals approaching you; most of the time it's better to ignore anyone that approaches you, they're either trying to sell you something or rob you - I may be being pessimistic but better safe than sorry. My general rule is that if someone says something to me on the street I ignore them unless something is on fire and people are running away screaming.

.Plastic zip lock bags - they come in useful in many instances, I've had my shampoo bottle explode one too many times; they're like mini portable containers.

.elastic bands, safety pins and a sewing kit has always come in useful so i recommend those.

. Bank cards - usually a topic that's brought up a lot but I like Starling and Monzo, both without international fees, for Americans Charles Schwab seems your best bet. . Be wary of atm fees - research the best atms/ banks to use in the countries you're going to however atm fees are sometimes unavoidable. Always pick the foreign currency when it comes to withdrawal/payment

Stop. it’s not cool. it’s not going to get you a girlfriend or a sugar baby travel companion. it is creepy and there are websites for this. just don’t do it unless you’ve previously mentioned that you’ll be messaging them or asked if it’s okay to.

it’s so creepy, and for goodness sake stop messaging if you’ve been ignored initially. what makes you think you’ll be picked as a random person on the internet when i don’t even want to travel with my real life friends? what makes you think you’re 54 and going to get a 20 year old girlfriend off reddit?

makes me not want to post for ask for advice because i know creepy men will be all up in the dms. can anyone else relate? lol

edit: thanks for all the wonderful support guys, this is why i made the post! to be clear, i am not referring to nice, helpful, non creepy dms! those are fine lol!
