I’m at my friend’s cabin, and the last two hours have been insane. I’m trying to make sure I write all of this down so that I don’t forget it later.

Some backstory: I’ve got this old friend - let’s call him Kevin. We were really tight growing up, but as we both got older, we started to have less and less in common and so we naturally drifted apart from each other. He’s got his shit together - he’s loaded, has a great career, loving wife, and lots of hobbies. I, on the other hand, am a bit of a burnout. I do temp work for money, and then I spend it all on partying.

I was surprised when he reached out to say that we should hang out together, just him and I. He wanted to rekindle our friendship and find some common ground again. He said we could go to his cabin, get fucked up, and catch up on all of the missed years. I jumped at the opportunity to see a goodie-two-shoes like Kevin completely trashed, and so here we are.

He drove me out to the cabin, and before we entered, he took out two pills for us to take. Coolest thing he’s ever done in his life. He said it was premium stuff and that it would absolutely fuck us up. I’m always down for a drug-filled adventure, so we popped them and then headed inside the cabin.

The pills kicked in instantly. As soon as we got inside, everything immediately felt like the craziest, most intense hallucination ever.

We’re sitting in the living room of his cabin right now. Here’s some of the stuff that I’ve been seeing over the last two hours:

- The room is busy. But not with people. It’s filled with these really long, tall, ghoulish looking things that are walking around the room. Their bodies are covered with black fur, but their heads are bright yet dark. It’s hard to explain. Wherever they walk, the area is illuminated, but if you actually look at their faces, you can’t really tell where their eyes or mouths are. Some of them have large wings.

- If I look up, I don’t see a ceiling. Instead, the room just stretches really, really long. Far away, at the very top, it looks like there’s some sort of dark silver shimmering upside-down pool.

- I hear this croaky, deep giggling coming from all over the room. It feels really really loud in my head. Definitely the strongest auditory hallucination I’ve ever experienced.

I’ve been asking him over and over to tell me what he slipped us (I need to take this shit again), but he’s been really tight-lipped on what the drug is. I’ve been doing some googling to see what kinds of drugs elicit hallucinations like this, but no luck so far. I’m amazed, with how fucked up I am, that I’m able to write this lucidly.

It may surprise you to know that almost 90% of Maine is covered in forests. Even in this modern age there is true wilderness that hides mysteries to be explored. It’s one of the reasons I became a park ranger. The chance to be in the outdoors, to enjoy the wild untamed wilderness. I know better now. I know better than to explore that which should be left alone and now I warn you.

After getting my dream job I was assigned to a small ranger station up in northern Maine. The area was stunning in its natural beauty. Trees hundreds of years old grew to touch the sky and rocky terrain led to a wonderful landscape of hills and valleys. Ever since I was a scout as a child I had imagined being able to enjoy this serenity as my actual job and here it was in reality.

The ranger station was a converted log cabin which gave me an instant feeling of rustic warmth. Inside a fire was crackling and an older man was tending to it. I walked in hand extended “Uh hi, I’m the new ranger assigned here, glad to meet you.” I waited in awkward silence and dropped my hand as the man ignored me for a few minutes before turning around and standing tall. He was a stout and portly man with graying hair who looked me up and down before walking away from me over to a table with a coffee pot. I sat in silence while he poured himself a cup and let the steam rise as he sat down in a large wooden chair.

“So you’re the new whelp they’re sending me.” The man took a long drink from his mug. His voice was raspy like he’d smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.

“Uh, yes sir, Ranger Parson here and ready” I uttered almost giddily.

Another silence as the portly man glared at me “That is way too much energy for this time of day.”

“Sorry sir, just excited.”

“No more of this sir stuff, name’s Hicks so please use it.” He put his mug down and got up from the chair grabbing his coat off a rack and gestured for me to follow. Hicks led me to the ranger truck and gestured for me to get inside. “Come on whelp, let’s get you acquainted with the woods here.”

We drove in silence for a while as we navigated the truck through some rough dirt roads weaving through the thick forest as I admired the beauty of it all. “So listen up Parson, this job is life and death for folks so you need to be alert and ready at all times.”

My back unconsciously sat upright and straight. “Yes Hicks, of course.”

A patient at my nursing home recently went missing. We found this note tucked under the arm of an unknown woman left in his bed:

I recall with a vivid clarity the first day I laid eyes upon Carolin. She entered my room with the youthful confidence of fresh blood. Two weeks out of nursing school, the first of her family to earn a college degree, and she had already landed a position in Summit Ridge. Her radiant blonde hair glistened even under the humming fluorescent lights. The brilliant sheen was eclipsed only by the natural warmth of her smile. The grace and finesse of her movements mirrored a seasoned dancer. Every inch of her exuded pure compassion.

As she greeted me and introduced herself I beckoned her closer. Without my glasses I could not see in perfect clarity. My trembling hands could muster no more than a fragile grasp around the thick metal rims. I leaned forward and asked in my most humble of voices for some assistance. She bent and reached forward, securing them over my ears. I rested my fingers upon hers and took a deep breath. How I longed for sturdy hands again. Such a shame it would be to see her tremble.

Hours melded and warped the day’s passage as they do when little more than daytime TV and worn bingo boards occupy one’s time. Before the setting sun departed, Carolin came to fetch me for dinner. Youthful divinity guiding meticulous navigation around unseen obstacles, she wheeled me into the dining hall. Further escort was essential. My legs would not carry me beyond the door lest they fall from under me. Gone for now were the days of roaming on a whim.

“Carolin, my dear,” I said as we arrived, “would you be so kind as to help me from my chair?”

“Of course,” she replied with a grin.

She placed her arms underneath my own, bent her knees and hoisted me. Such perfect form, fresh from years of training and preparation. As I stood, I rested my hands upon the tops of her legs feigning the need for greater support. I drew a deep breath and righted myself. How I longed to stand on my own again. Such a shame it would be to see her perfect posture flawed by degenerative weakness.

Through the evening I embarked on the most pleasant of dreams. Days of my youths both recent and long past, lovers lost to the tests of time, the simple joys of days started and ended with the rise and fall of the sun. Fond dreams were a rare but welcomed deviation from nights of shallow darkness and broken replays of the former afternoon’s non-events. Those memories were a scarce gift, a gift well deserved. As was Carolin. Her smile was no less flawless than the day before. The morning glow danced across her golden hair but the waltz stopped two steps short of the crescendo, interrupted by an attack of occasional gray strands.

“Time for the morning cocktail,” she said with a chuckle.

A rainbow of tablets and capsules rattled around a small plastic cup as her quaking hands reached across my bedside table. She watched her own movements wielding an uncertain concern. With a stable reach and firm grasp, I took the cup from her and offered a sheepish yellow stained grin. And though my hands no longer shook, I could never refuse her caring invitation to aid with menial tasks. She helped me wash my face, pick my clothes, and brush my teeth. To someone so young, so eager to provide a relentless kindness, I could not muster the courage to tell her the mangled protrusions I excused as teeth need not draw her worry. But in her exuberant persistence, I tilted my head back and allowed her to ward off my morning stink. As the bristles made contact, I took a deep breath. How I longed for perfect teeth yet again. Such a shame it would be to tarnish her flawless smile.
