HUNTING RARE FOSSILS | PALEONTOLOGY DISCOVERIES
What do you know about paleontology? Perhaps you've heard something about this science and even watched a program about it on the Discovery Channel.
These two authors have devoted their whole lives to paleontology.
Yorkshire Fossils began his fossil hunt when he was only 8 years old. His dad also had this passion. And soon the hobby of son and father grew into a family craft.
They usually find ammonite fossils, but occasionally after rough seas and coastal erosion they find marine reptile fossils. These finds have been investigated and documented by palaeontologists, and they let other people research them if needs be.
Markus Martin has been collecting fossils for as long as he can remember. It started with his grandparents. Markus doesn't have any formal education in paleontology. ...

10. Patagotitan
In 2012, a farmer came across a stone littered with the remains of all kinds of dinosaurs. Some of the fossilized bones in particular, were determined to belong to a massive herbivore. This new species is arguably the most massive dinosaur ever discovered!! Now known as the Patagotitan mayorum, this titanosaur was 122 feet (37 m) long, nearly 20 feet high (6 m) at the shoulder, and weighed over 70 tons.
9. Megalosaurus
The Megalosaurus was found in England in 1676, where a fragmentary bone was discovered in a limestone quarry in Oxfordshire. This find was one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered!! The first scientists to examine the bone thought it might have come from a Roman war elephant, or even from a giant human like those mentioned in the Bible. The fragment was the end of a femur, but because of its shape, it was labeled “Scrotum humanum”. The name stuck until 1827, when it was given its proper name.
8. Tyrannosaurus Rex
What listing of huge fossils would be complete without the king of the dinosaurs? It was one of the largest predators ever, with just its skull measuring over five feet long! It’s estimated that T. rex had the greatest bite force in history, at about 8000 pounds of pressure – about the weight of three small cars! Now scientists believe that adult t-rexes could have been covered in feathers.
7. Giganotosaurus
Its name is often mispronounced as “giganto-saurus,” a name that would be appropriate for its immense size, but that’s actually the name of another dinosaur. Giganotosaurus’ name is really Greek for “great Southern lizard.” Found in Argentina, this beast lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 97 million years ago. It was larger than a T-rex, estimated to be about 45 feet long (13.7 m) and tipping the scales at 15 tons. That’s a several tons heavier and five feet longer than T. rex!
6. Archaeopteryx
The Archaeopteryx is a transitional species between dinosaurs and birds. It is often considered the first bird. This remarkable creature was first found in southern Germany in 1860. It’s not very large – only about the size of a raven – but the quality that makes it “big” is its plumage. Like birds, the Archaeopteryx had flight feathers, and these have been beautifully preserved in the fossil record. In fact, eleven separate specimens have been discovered, all of them with their feathers clearly shown.
5. Diplodocus
First discovered in 1877 in Colorado, Diplodocus was a four-footed, herbivorous giant. It lived in North America during the Jurassic period, about 155 million years ago. A long-necked, long-tailed creature, the Diplodocus measured about 108 feet (33 m) long and weighed about 17.6 tons (10 to 16 metric tons).
4. Mosasaurus
Massive monsters weren’t exclusively found on land. These ancient marine reptiles were not dinosaurs and are believed to be one of the most fearsome predators to live in the ocean. The Mosasaurus could reach lengths of up to 56 feet (17 m) and weigh up to 30,000 pounds (13,607 kg). Paleontologists think that Mosasaurus had tail flukes similar to sharks, and like sharks, it probably could cruise along at a pretty fast speed!
3. Iguanodon
The Iguanodon, was a four-legged herbivore that lived during the Jurassic period to the Cretaceous. When a fossil was first obtained by an English doctor in 1825, it was just a gigantic tooth that the doctor called “Iguanodon”, meaning “iguana tooth”. Over the years many different dinosaurs were labelled as iguanodons so it got kind of confusing and it was hard to find big skeletons and artists started to create their own beasts based on bits and pieces of information.
2. Hadrosaurus
Their name translates to “bulky lizard,” but we know them better as duck-billed dinosaurs. These creatures were the most common dinosaurs, found all across Europe, North America and Asia during the late Cretaceous period about 80 million years ago.
Hadrosaurs were herbivores, and they probably lived near water. They ran on two legs and had a stiff tail that helped them balance.
1. Yutyrannus
This dinosaur was a distant cousin of the T-Rex and lived in the Cretaceous period. Discovered in northeastern China, these guys were big, scary, and fluffy!!

He spent years working in finance and decided to make the jump to fossils full time about 15 years ago.
His approach involves a practical application of science both in the field and the lab, which has led him to many new discoveries and impact contributions in the science of paleontology and beyond.
Get ready to say “wow”, because these two fossil hunters will open the door to the past.

Wild Animals That SAVED Human Lives! 🐻https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mllqeVSsIl0
10. Nodosaur Fossil
One of the most amazing fossil finds in history was the Nodosaur! This armor plated plant eater lived about 110 million years ago and is one of the best preserved dinosaur heads ever! Most fossils are fragments of bone and teeth but this has the actual skin and armor of the animal from the head to around the hip.
9. Mosquito In Amber
What if we found a well-preserved ancient mosquito preserved in amber, just like in Jurassic Park? Could we bring dinosaurs back? This concept is a fascinating one as in the movie, dino blood was extracted from the mosquito to create dinosaurs in the present. But such a thing wouldn’t be possible in real life right? Right…?
8. Archaeopteryx
Archaeopteryx is the oldest known bird from the late Jurassic period. This creature is extremely important as it is the link between dinosaurs and birds. The discovery of this fossil in Germany in 1860 is sometimes referred to as the “original bird” or “first bird”, however that is not exactly the case.
7. Diplodocus
What makes the Diplodocus so amazing is we know a lot about it. In the mysterious world of fossils that’s a big deal! It was first discovered in 1877 and the name ‘Diplodocus’ means “double beam”. That’s in reference to the interesting shape of the bones in its tail. Since then casts of whole skeletons were donated to the public by steel baron Andrew Carnegie.
6. Dueling Dinosaurs
In 2006 cowboy and rancher Clayton Phipps and his friend Mark Eatman, known as the “Dino Cowboy” went out looking for dinosaur bones in Montana. Montana is rich in dinosaur fossils and they can be worth a lot! Whenever the men weren’t doing ranch work, they were out looking for fossils and started going to trade shows and selling to museums and private collectors.
5. Hadrosaurus
This monster fossil is impressive but somewhat controversial. You may not associate somewhere like New Jersey with dinosaurs but the strange truth is the state has its own dino… the Hadrosaurus, which reportedly means “bulky lizard”. Not a bad way to refer to one of these guys we guess! Its bones were discovered by accident when a pit was being dug in New Jersey, in 1838.
4. Hobbit
Not all fossils are of dinosaurs, as this extraordinary collection of ancient human fossils demonstrates. Back in the early nineties the remains of 9 individuals were found and excavated in a cave on the island of Flores, Indonesia. Named ‘Homo floresiensis’, they were like humans only different in one important aspect- size.
3. Megalosaurus
What was the first dinosaur fossil ever discovered? That was found in England in 1824 with the “great lizard” or Megalosaurus. This was before the idea of a dinosaur was even invented, 18 years later. So as far as scientists were concerned this was something new and pretty freaky! At first they drew some conclusions from the fossils that weren’t too accurate.
2. Lucy
An amazing and game changing fossil discovery was made in 1974, when Lucy was discovered in the Afar region of Ethiopia. Her real name is ‘Australopithecus afarensis’ but she was named Lucy after the Beatles song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds which the scientists were playing on their tape deck at the time.
1. Tyrannosaurus Sue
Tyrannosaurus Sue is the largest and best preserved T-Rex fossil ever found. Her real name is Specimen FMNH PR 2081 but Sue is catchier. She is also named after Sue Hendrickson, the woman who found her. The 80% complete Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the best discoveries ever and is now located at Chicago’s Field Museum but the story of the discovery is pretty complicated.
