I think a planetary war game would be fun. You and another person would set up gravitational wells along the sides of the cube and both you and your opponent need to upgrade their planet to blast them with as many rail guns as possible, trying to get past the grave well while doing it.

Make simple party games. So it’s a mix of challenges or pop culture quizzes. Groups can play all individually or as teams. Different modes could include getting through as many different puzzles as possible in a set time limit then passing to the other team for them to try and beat. Or a mode of hot potato. Cube gets passed every time a puzzle is completed. You have a set time to complete the puzzle or you lose. Mini puzzles can be anything like guide a marble on a track by twisting and tilting the cube. Twisting the cube to align top and bottom half historical landmarks. Or more cryptic made up ones where one side of the cube has a puzzle key and the other side the player has to match a series of things together using the key.

Call it Party Cube. App developers can release new content like updated trivia questions or new puzzles to keep it fresh for players.

Name: Maze Master

Description of game: you start off in a maze where only one quarter of the cube is illuminated, you have to navigate through the maze and get to another corner of the cube and complete a puzzle to light up the next area. This maze would include enemies, traps and bosses. Once you reach a door for a boss the whole cube would become playable and you’d have to use the combat of the character alongside moving the cube to fight and win against the bosses. These bosses would drop loot such as weapons and armor. Once you defeat a boss an animation appears of your character opening a door and the maze opens a new quarter of the cube. You can move the maze around to find new areas. So if you were stuck in one area, twisting the cube could open a new place. You would use the other mechanics such as shake and tilt to complete tasks such as rope walking where you have to balance, dodging etc.

Game Characters: Bun - small character with little health but very fast, where you have the ability to jump through certain areas to the next side of the cube. Molt - Medium size character which can dig under certain areas to different parts of the cube and has range fire abilities Pinch - Medium size character who has good close range attack and health , special ability to hold heavier items

Obviously other characters but the above are examples

I think this would be a really fun game to play

My idea: a puzzle game to teach basic concepts of logic and computer science

Name: Logic Cube

Possibly a few game modes:

1) At the start of a level you get a description of a logic gate. Each square on the cube has a part of a logic circuit. On each level you have to connect 2 input squares to an output square by making a circuit/logic gate with the components on the other squares (see https://nandgame.com/). Do this by twisting the cube so the logic flow lines up. Also, can rotate components by rotating the cube or sub cube. Puzzles can be made easier or harder by simplifying/changing the goals or circuit components. After making the basic logic gates, can make more complex circuits just like in nandgame.

2) Create a set of puzzles similar to the game Baba is You, but instead of being able to move the character, you modify the assignment of blocks on the cube by twisting, and the “code” you write by moving tiles around is executed when you shake the cube. Each level could have a different goal. For example, if the goal were to make a character collect 3 stars, the “code” could involve moving a set of arrow tiles which move the character or stars 1 tile in the direction they point. Add on different such rules to make harder puzzles.

Ps. This looks really cool, especially if the screen could be OLED.

Looks like the link to the DevKit is missing from the post

Title: Twisty Reality

Characters: Protag/John, enemies(minions, elites, bosses)

Mechanics: Avoid obstacles, find a path forward, solve puzzles, escape/avoid enemies, fighting is an option once gear is acquired, randomization of paths for replay, bosses utilize top 4 screens for their challenge

Goal: be strong/quick/smart enough to defeat final boss.

Functions: Display only the top screens, top-down perspective, Protag starts in the center of a square, TILT to maneuver, TWIST to alter a path to another one, Protag builds up speed when moving, Protag auto combats with enemies within range and not moving quickly around or away from the enemy, special interactions depending on speed and angle of collision, gear upgrades in a simple fashion, RPG stats increased by decisions made (e.g. dodge an enemy increases auto dodging, engaging in combat increase strength), paths are randomly generated, players will utilize the variety of mechanics to defeat a boss,

While it is not the most original idea, creating a 4d rubicks cube or some similar puzzle to run on the system would be a neat demonstration concept you control the X, Y & Z axis by turning the cube and the W axis by sliding your finger along one of the sides.

You could also make a platformer for it when you change the level by spinning the cube.

Cube Crawler:

A 2D dungeon crawler game with a “campaign” mode and a “runner” mode. You chase after your dog who runs into a cave and you must rescue your best friend (the dog of course).

Characters:

  • Playable selection of four “protagonists” each with a unique ability (Strength, Speed, Tank, Luck)
  • Tutorial character who lives in the cave and teaches you the mechanics
  • Shop character to buy power ups
  • The Dweller: main antagonist, hunts humans who found their way in it’s caverns
  • Ally characters: handful of creatures sympathetic to the player and help along journey
  • General enemies: bats, death worm, glow worm, flame moth, mole, other cave-type creatures with fun twists
  • Rufus: pet dog who ran into the cave and you chased after them

Mechanics:

  • health system recovered through drops and shopkeeper
  • Power-ups: health, speed, defense, attack, sneak, freeze, timer weapons
  • power ups are random and shopkeeper has 2 each
  • money system picked up from enemy drops and in cave segments
  • Random/progressively generated cave system
  • Each level is themed and brings you closer to your dog
  • the Dweller makes sure you keep moving. You need a power up to escape them if caught. Appears part-way in each level and lurks on cubes further back
  • tiles connect cave paths and are updated on the rear half of the cube
  • Chance to encounter ally character per level who helps defeat creatures and stalls the dweller

How To Play:

  • Tilt to select direction while running and to move cursor in selection screens
  • Tap twice to confirm action (purchasing power-up, perform attack)
  • Twist to swap cave paths (must connect to proceed, not all will)
  • shake left to right 2x to use power up
  • shake up and down 3x for menu

Similar to the car game that was on the video, a slightly different version with some sort of MC Escher/impossible perspective waterway game where the water can go “up” a waterfall. Maybe it’s randomly generated tiles and it’s a speed/time based deal 🤷‍♂️ tilt to slow down the water/speed up, shake to go up certain walls.

I never played FEZ, but wasn’t it some sort of rotation/perspective type game to rotate the game world to reveal paths and such? Seems logical but not sure how easy something like that could be done with the “rubix” part (as in, with a cube all sides display a different path that forces you to move the cube around).

But maybe that’s all too similar with the Cut the Rope version that’s on there.

Ummmm…. Last I got is some form of Plinko/Pachinko type game where the ball takes some random pathway (or say you have to get it through 4 screens or whatever) and then you’re trying to move the goals/end points in time for it to land in (like there’s a 5-point, 10-point, etc goal screen that randomly displays and you have to find it and move it in time). Heck, that could turn into some wild modular pinball-type game game.

Man this would be so cool. It’s like a GameCube but 2022. If I had to come up with a game idea it would be like a retro game. Sort of like Galaga but better and more modern, using motion controls. Shaking to fire ammunition and tilting to move the spaceship. The characters would be unnamed actually, but pixelated in style, like Galaga itself. Just shoot all the enemies to win, while collecting viable power ups and going for high scores. Online play and co-op must be in there, too!

I would love to see some kind of final fantasy tactics style of game where movement would be made by tilting and combat would be replace by some kind of qte with twist, tilt and shake to attack/pary/defend. Fight would become more and more intense and being able to lose some characters would make the game "hardcore" and force you to give it your best.

Name: Escape from the Box

Characters: Jane, a kidnapping victim who needs the player’s help.

Imagine each of the eight modules that makes up the WOWCube system is actually a prison cell, and there’s a (live-action?) prisoner trapped inside the system who needs your help to escape.

The game starts with Jane slamming her hands on the transparent outer wall of her cell. She stumbles backward in shock when the player touches her cell from the outside.

She explains what happened to her and solicits the player’s help in escaping.

The ceiling in her cell is much too tall for her to reach, but by gently twisting the cube, you can help her move from the floor, to walk on a wall, to walk on the ceiling of the (now upside-down) cube to reach the first puzzle, a hatch which opens to the cell above (now below) hers.

By adding or removing cubicles, remembering sequences (like the game Simon), and other puzzles the player and the prisoner uncover the dark secrets of the Box… and a way out.

“What did you just do?” the prisoner says, reacting to a noise resulting from a user action that happened on the opposite side of the system. “Hey, look, a panel just opened here. I wonder what happens if I pull this lever…”

Early goals are to help the prisoner move freely from one cell to another. Eventually, internal windows and walls are broken. Maybe an anti-gravity system is uncovered and the prisoner can float between rooms in later stages.

The character can react in real-time to cube movements, and the player must take care not to shake it, or turn it upside-down (except as required by the story’s puzzles) to keep the prisoner safe.

———

Name: 3D Stacker

Characters: Pixel Pete, a tiny block character who explains the game’s mechanics from his perch on top of the control cube.

One cubicle serves as the main interface (the control cube), and the other seven serve as building blocks. Your job, as the player is to watch for the prompt and try to reconstruct what it looks like, using only the seven remaining cubicles and with a severe time limit, maybe 3-5 seconds.

The sculptures appear abstract at first, but correctly solving them causes images to display which reveal their real-life form. The player builds a simple tree shape or a flamingo, for example and, when it’s finished properly, images appear on the screens to form a 3D picture model.

My idea for a game is that each screen of the cube lights up a certain color, there's 4 of each each color, and 6 colors altogether. At the beginning of the game, the colors are randomly switched to other faces, and the aim of the game is to twist the faces so that all the screens with the same color are on the same side of the cube.

While Jim will be on one screen players must move the other screens and rearrange the paths to make them connect or replace paths that have any other hazards like water, animals, etc and while you move the paths you can make Jim go to the path that u just moved do this till you see Juliet on the other side and you win. The Eternity Tower

Alright, this is a long one. I'm really passionate about game design, so this is an awesome contest.

I can go into more detail if the devs want, but there's a limit to how much I can practically say within the bounds of a Reddit comment. And I wasn't even able to fit it all into one comment - it took four. Please see my replies to this comment for the rest!

Basics

This game is a dungeon crawler where you manipulate the dungeon instead of the player character.

Basically, the player character is automatic. You don't directly control them. They walk around and perform tasks on their own - collecting items, battling enemies, talking to NPCs, and so on. As you progress through the dungeon, it changes and shifts, and you'll eventually reach the end.

Some of the specifics of this game may depend on the limitations of the console.

It would act similar to a maze or rubix cube - you twist to make the rooms meet. Maybe one room has an X shape for entrances while another has a + shape. They wouldn't be able to meet, so the player character (PC) wouldn't be able to leave.

Ideally, the dungeon would be randomised, so like a rogue-like. The issue with rogue-like is that it may be difficult to properly structure the rooms in order to have them connect properly if it's randomised. After all, you are changing the shape of it constantly.

Dungeon Crawl Mechanics

There are two main options. You start on floor 1, then either you have an exit to floor 2 and need to guide your character to it, or you automatically progress to floor 2 after visiting a certain number of rooms. I prefer the second, so that's what I'll be assuming is how the game will be handled from this point on. The number would either be fixed (8, for instance), or scaling with the floor. Visiting the same room twice would count it twice. However, if you start getting into bigger floors, and if you use the second method, then the first floors you visited should disappear as you climb. I prefer scaling with disappearing rooms after 8, so that's what I'll use from here on out.

Think like this. You start in room 1A. Room 1, Floor A. You eventually to 7A. 7A is right next to 1A (it doesn't have to be, but let's say you twisted it to be there for this example). If you enter 1A, this is your 8th room, but also the 1st, so it's basically still the 7th. Because the "1st room" doesn't really exist anymore - the room is still there, but now it's the 8th room instead. Step back into 7A, it's now 9, but you no longer have a 7, so everything bumps down. If you never leave those 7 rooms, they'll stay there indefinitely. What'll change is the order of which room disappears first when you eventually do leave them.

Once you leave and go into an 8th room, your 1st room is replaced with a new room. Once X number of rooms have been replaced, say 24 (though as I said, scaling with level would likely work better and allow much better pacing), the next room to disappear will be replaced with 1B, so the B floor. And then either it continues as normal, or the A rooms all vanish and get replaced the instant you enter a B room.

I'm using 1A because it's easier to communicate in a reddit comment than 1-1, but 1-1 or some other variation would probably be better, as it allows unlimited floors. It also makes it easier to count rooms than A1.

Premise

You climb a tower - that's the plot. As for story, this is a tower you've been tasked with climbing. You went to bed and one day you just woke up in 1A of the tower. An old guy in 1A, The Guide, tells you that your ultimate goal is to reach the end - only then can you go home. Actually, The Guide should be in room 1 of the Zero floor (so if 1A is actually 1-1, then The Guide is in 1-0), which is the tutorial level. So you don't need to repeat that every time. Have the tutorial level selectable as an option in the menu from the second time you start the game, or give people a backdoor that opens in 1-0 once the tutorial has been completed, so they always start in 1-0 and can just immediately proceed. This version only works if some degree of player control is granted through tilting and shaking - this can be used as a mechanic for using items and talking to NPCs or taking other special actions in a room. This depends on how well that would handle with the console. If this is allowed, The Guide starts with "Welcome to the Tower." For first timers, he automatically continues. For veterans, he says "shake/tilt to go to 1-1," then waits a moment, then continues.

The story is, the Tower is infinity. It loops back around on itself endlessly. Just going through the Tower is eternal. But if you talk to NPCs and connect the dots (or connect the rooms, from a literal sense), you can find the secret path that leads out of the eternity and to the top of the Tower. This is how you win. This would be X-X and wouldn't have a minimum floor you'd need to reach first, though you'd have to meet the prerequisites to get there, which involves actually talking to the NPCs, not just knowing what they'll say and act on it.

A game that is either inspired by, or perhaps a WowCube licensed version of Sprawlopolis, a small card game published by Buttonshy Games. (They have a 2nd sequel on Kickstarter right now, called Naturopolis.)

How it works

When you load up the game, three of the squares on the top of the cube show "goals" for this game. (There would be multiple goals, which ones used by this particular game are selected at random, or in some "level sequence".) There are quite a number of possible goals – 18 in the original Sprawlopolis game, but also 48 fan-made alternate score conditions here: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/181832/48-alternate-scoring-conditions)

The 4th square on the top of the cube would show "progress" toward all three of these goals in the form of 2 numbers, the current score, and the target score.

All the other squares on the cube are split into quadrants. Each quadrant shows one of 4 types of "zone". Zones are either commercial (blue), park (green), industrial (grey), or residential (orange). Zones can also have roads on them. Unlike the physical (card) game, you cannot "overlap" cards, so roads should always enter one side of the cube square (in the center of a quadrant), and exit through another.

The cube calculates the score based on the 3 goals shown at every turn of the cube. (Ideally, the game should start with a zero score configuration, but if you go with random positions, this might not be the case.) When the score is greater than or equal to the "goal score", the player has won, and a suitable animation should show this.

Game Idea: Runner Game Characters: Main=The Runner, Bad guys: Frog that jumps, Snail is slow, snake is long, Rabbit is erratic.

Game Play: The Runner starts in the lower left front cube and starts running towards the right. The running will wrap around each cube face. As The Runner runs, things will show up on the cubes to the right. These will be things that need to be jumped by double tapping, or be avoided. You can avoid them by rotating the cube on the right, up or down. The longer The runner goes without jumping, the faster The Runner goes.

So The runner will run, and the next cube may show a snail. Above that cube may be a road with nothing in the way, and the below cube may have a dead end. So they can try to jump the snail, or take the easy road but they go a bit faster.

The Frogs eyes will shut just before he/she jumps. The user will have to judge if they need to jump or just run under it. The snake is long, so needs two non-jumping cubes to be able to jump. The Rabbits eyes move just a bit before he/she moves. This needs to be accounted for when jumping. And Rabbit may move the way you are going, so you may need the long jump used on the snake.

Each "Bad guy" has three (or more) types, and each moves faster than the others.

Other things you can jump is a heart for an extra life. But step in oil (or water) and your slide when you try to jump for the next cube.

Scoring is based on cube distance traveled, with bonuses for jumps and distance jumps. Also faster movement gives faster points.

Alternative mode, instead of auto running, you must tilt the cube to make him run. This is more complex as you must tilt and twist at the same time.

In both cases it should be clear by the points on screen and noise, that going faster gives more points.

Math Jam

How it works: line up results with equations to trigger interesting effects and score points. it can be presented in the form of a race or climb on one side of the cube. To end the game and secure your win after reaching the end, you could have to align the screens on the side that showed progress (sort of like a boss fight and giving the other participant a chance to catch up). The final puzzle could take up the whole cube to paint a scene of the victory.

You could have a limited number of shakes to get a new math problem. twists to solve what you can.

General comment

There might be more utility with this if the screens didn't move. i.e. 6 big screens with swipe functionality rather than all these smaller ones. Of course the edges would have to be bumpered. accidental swiping might be an issue

I think developing a "fez like" platformer would be a good way to sue the unique form factor of the WOWCube.

How about a music game- you can set each side to be an instrument of choice, and you can play chords or notes choosing from the 4 faces. Maybe you could set it up on a loop and increase tempo by twisting the cube.

Or maybe a multiplayer drawing game. Players create or draw a monster on their phones. Once everyone is done, bits of everyone's monsters get projected onto the cube. So, player A's monsters head is connected to player B's monsters neck etc.,

Name - Cube Rogue!

Type - Rougelike/lite

Characters - warrior, mage, rogue, archer - choose one

Enemies - basic fantasy goblins orcs etc

mechanics - Move your character by tilting the cube to either side for forwards and backwards (left/right) - twist the cube to allow for him to traverse obstacles (move a platform down - move a door open/closed) - can also apply turning the entire cube to fall down a la Downwell. Jumps can be attained by shaking up and down. Combat is auto when encountering an enemy - with power moves built by hits, can be unleashed with a shake. When killed start over - retaining some of your built stats - slowly growing over time

A color matching game. Given a specific color, you spin the cube’s different colors to put ‘‘em side by side, and swipe to merge the colors together, adding different colors, lighter colors to lighten, and darker colors to match the color given (think a painter mixing different colors in a palette) the whole thing would but fun spinning colors to make them adjacent, and then continuing so to change colors on each tile face until you match.

If you dont have a WOWCube, you must be a baby

[–]allofthesaxesbro [score hidden]  (1 child)

You could make a maze game like the big plastic maze spheres. You have to rotate the WOWCube in order to move a ball through the mazes/screens. Because it's electronic, you could make multiple levels that increase in difficulty.

Escape cube.

Your are stuck inside the cube and must escape. timed escape or you are stuck in the cube forever.

it’s like an escape room style escape. With using all the functions it has to offer as puzzles…tab, twist, shake etc to figure out the puzzles

Some puzzles examples, collecting jigsaw puzzles, hidden objects, use the rubix cube style, tap a specific cube piece, twist and turn puzzle so much more…

Also new escape cube games could be introduced with different story/puzzles so it’s a continues new release games in the future

You could do a puzzle game based off of the Lament Configuration from the Hellraiser movies. You could throw in some jump scares with the different cenobite demons. That would be epic!

Chaotic rubix Cube app. It's like a normal rubiks cube but after certain time intervals one or more colors will randomly switch places with another and you have to constantly correct and fix the cube as the cube changes variations until you finish it. Could have a leader board and be fun for best personal times. Would only work with a real physical digital cube that works similiar to a rubiks.

Hmm, I would do the craziest game of snake to ever exist. Could even have multiple snakes, or a mix between snake and Pac-Man. The characters are Steven, axle, and Magnus. Protagonists and antagonists. Functions like normal snake and Pac-Man for game mechanics but the motions of the cube can add different effects, like twisting could conjure a wall, shaking could stir up sand to slow enemies down, tilting could speed things up. All abilities don cooldown

If you can get the licensing, getting some old school games on there like Contra. Motion controls could be like the current ps5 for left right (twist right go right, left go left)

Endless runner type game that goes all around the cube and you have to turn to avoid objects and keep the clear path ahead
