Ugh. Blackman murdered my time with this one.

I've read three of his that I thought were grand. One that I thought was good.

And this one was like a comedian trying too hard to be funny & failing miserably. All that needed to be said was in a single sentence on page 174 or something. Would have done well in a fortune cookie.

Really fun, sweet book. The miniseries isn’t that good, but the book is fantastic.

I really enjoyed most of Backman's books. Felt seriously let down by My Grandmother Send Her Regards and Apologies (also called My Grandmother Said To Tell You She's sorry) though.

I completely agree. When I read that one, I felt so let down. It almost seemed out of place with all of his other books.

Haven’t read it yet, but it’s on my bookshelf ready to go, I love 90% Bachmans other works…

I finished it a month ago and I still think about it. It's one of my new favorite books. As you said, the characters are well-written and subvert your expectations in a simple and sweet way. I shed more than a few tears with the clarity and kindness he relates parent-child, husband-wife relationships. It's wonderful.

The series is not so great, stick to the book.
