Weekly Recommendation Thread: October 14, 2022
Welcome to our weekly recommendation thread! A few years ago now the mod team decided to condense the many "suggest some books" threads into one big mega-thread, in order to consolidate the subreddit and diversify the front page a little. Since then, we have removed suggestion threads and directed their posters to this thread instead. This tradition continues, so let's jump right in!
The Rules
Every comment in reply to this self-post must be a request for suggestions.
All suggestions made in this thread must be direct replies to other people's requests. Do not post suggestions in reply to this self-post.
All unrelated comments will be deleted in the interest of cleanliness.
How to get the best recommendations
The most successful recommendation requests include a description of the kind of book being sought. This might be a particular kind of protagonist, setting, plot, atmosphere, theme, or subject matter. You may be looking for something similar to another book (or film, TV show, game, etc), and examples are great! Just be sure to explain what you liked about them too. Other helpful things to think about are genre, length and reading level.
All Weekly Recommendation Threads are linked below the header throughout the week to guarantee that this thread remains active day-to-day. For those bursting with books that you are hungry to suggest, we've set the suggested sort to new; you may need to set this manually if your app or settings ignores suggested sort.
If this thread has not slaked your desire for tasty book suggestions, we propose that you head on over to the aptly named subreddit r/suggestmeabook.
The Management
what are your favorite comfort reads?
winter depression is creeping up on me and life is just lowkey wild at the moment. i tend to read a lot of books that are emotionally pretty intense, so i'm looking for some soft and hopeful book recs. something along the lines of becky chambers' "monk and robot" books. general scifi/fantasy/magical realism vibe. no sickeningly hetero-normative love stories please :D
I’m looking for a good non-cheesy love story, be it a romance novel proper or just a novel with a great romantic subplot. Something maybe kinda slow that I can sink my teeth into for a while, but with a happy ending for the characters. (I don’t mind sadness or stumbles along the way, but I definitely want it all to work out okay in the end!) Gender of the characters doesn’t matter, and explicit content won’t bother me. This is completely out of my wheelhouse, so I’m not sure where to start looking!
I really liked Persuasion by Jane Austen. Might be up your alley.

Or for contemporary romance, maybe Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall. It's a little short, which could be a good thing. And it might suit your cheese allergy :) I quite liked this book—I've been reading a lot of romance lately, and this book felt just a liiiiittle more "slow down contemplate" than the other books I've been reading. Main character repairs old books, which tells you a bit about the vibe :)
If you don't mind graphic novels, there's always When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs, the same guy who gave us the children's picture book, The Snowman.
