California children can now receive free books thanks to Dolly Parton: "The bill, SB 1183, was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom and will provide funding for Parton's 'Imagination Library' program, providing free books to children from birth to 5 years old"

Awesome program. I'm just sorry it ends at 5. My daughter loved everything they sent and it helped her become a great reader.

My 4 years old thinks of Dolly Parton as some magical book lady. He loves her so much lol.

Library cards never have an age limit.

My guess is this allows them to maximize funds to kids that don’t have school library access yet due to age.

Yeah, my 4 year old loves getting books from “Aunt Dolly” as he calls her.

The program will be available statewide in California in June 2023

Yes - the title of the article is intentionally misleading. It should read: "In June 2023, Children in California will receive free books..."

What does the state have to do with it? Don't you jist register with her program and they mail them to you? That's how we got my toddler to get free books....

It's weird to me that it took this long to get to California... My nephew was part of this program in Michigan 12 years ago.

i believe the program has been in California for a while but now its state wide and you can register online, not just at select library's in communities that allocated funds to support this. My kids have received books for a few years and we live in California.

It goes by zip code. Our city in Michigan (Dearborn) just became part of it a month ago.

It has to have a local donor/sponsor pay to start a program. I looked into starting one our rural county when the library was closed and it was a lot of money. I love the imagination library and Dolly!

It’s usually tied to local United Way or other charity involvement. When my son was born in Mid-Missouri we qualified because the local united way was the program sponsor, but when we moved to St Louis we couldn’t continue with the program because there wasn’t a program sponsor here.

I tried applying for it years ago for my now 7 year old. I am in California and we couldn’t get books.

It’s great people can get it now though!

Dolly gives books to kids in Australia.

Yeah, we've had this in AZ for awhile. Can't believe we beat CA to something so "progressive".

Isn't she a TN girl?
