It’s absurd how many communication mediums have been ruined by advertising, spam, and scams. Most of the mail you get is junk, most of the emails you get are junk, most of the phone calls you get are from bots, even a good portion of the text messages I receive are spam of some kind. If they ever invent a way to transmit thoughts directly between persons (not something I would even want) it would immediately be used to beam advertising into your brain. Hell companies are already researching to see if it’s possible to put ads in our dreams. Nothing is free from capitalism and nothing is sacred

PSA to artists on DeviantArt

DeviantArt announced their own AI model that is to be trained on artworks ALREADY uploaded to the platform. You can opt your artworks out one by one, but by default they are included in the data set!!!

I’d recommend opting-out with all your artworks ASAP if you don’t want to contribute and letting DeviantArt know you’re not happy with their decision.

The opt-out option on the artwork edit/upload page is for third-party tools only. If you want to opt out of DeviantArt’s own AI tool, you have to fill in this Google Form (Really.)

And it’s as bad as you might expect.

Opt out is not consent.

Remember that there exist accounts on DeviantArt that can no longer be accessed because the user either left entirely and forgot their credentials, or they’re dead.

Artists like Qinni can’t opt out of things like this because they are dead, and can’t fill out google forms. Deviantart knows damn well what they’re doing. They know there’s decades of gallery content that people have to thumb through to get it all opted out of AI shit, which any reasonable person knows that there’s not enough time in a day to do that with. So they’re banking on artists saying “Fuck it” and giving up halfway through.

It’s ghoulish behavior and despicable.

Cory Lee has visited 40 countries on seven continents, and yet the Georgia native has never explored Cloudland Canyon State Park, about 20 minutes from his home. His wheelchair was tough enough for the trip to Antarctica but not for the rugged terrain in his backyard.

Lee’s circumstances changed Friday, when Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources and the Aimee Copeland Foundation unveiled a fleet of all-terrain power wheelchairs for rent at 11 state parks and outdoorsy destinations, including Cloudland Canyon. The Action Trackchair models are equipped with tank-like tracks capable of traversing rocks, roots, streams and sand; clearing fallen trees; plowing through tall grass and tackling uphill climbs.

“I’ll finally be able to go on these trails for the first time in my life,” said the 32-year-old travel blogger, who shares his adventures on Curb Free with Cory Lee. “The trails are off-limits in my regular wheelchair.”

Georgia is one of the latest states to provide the Land Rover of wheelchairs to outdoor enthusiasts with mobility issues.

In 2017, Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched its Staunton State Park Track-Chair Program, which provides free adaptive equipment, though guests must pay the $10 entrance fee. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has placed off-road track chairs in nearly a dozen parks, including Muskegon State Park. In 2018, Lee reserved a chair at the park that boasts three miles of shoreline on Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. “It allowed me to have so much independence on the sand,” he said.

It’d be great if the business world actually gave a rat’s ass about avoiding information overload, noise pollution, and so on. From kitchen appliances to office software, they seem intent on saturating employees with meaningless alarms and notifications.

“How come these fries got ruined?” I dunno boss, maybe it’s because you have a dozen different appliances all constantly emitting a cacophony of alarms that may or may not mean anything to the people putting up with this noise pollution for hours at a time.

“Why didn’t you respond to my email?” Because my inbox is so full of absolutely irrelevant, meaningless crap that it has become functionally useless.

“Hey, did you get my message on Teams?” Maybe! The same idiots spamming my inbox with horseshit are also doing it on Teams so I kinda tune those notes out too.
