A check digit is a form of redundancy check used for error detection on identification numbers (e.g. bank account numbers) which have been input manually. It is analogous to a binary parity bit used to check for errors in computer-generated data. It consists of a single digit (sometimes more than one) computed by an algorithm from the other digits (or letters) in the sequence input.
With a check digit, one can detect simple errors in the input of a series of characters (usually digits) such as a single mistyped digit or some permutations of two successive digits.
Check digit algorithms are generally designed to capture human transcription errors. In order of complexity, these include the following:
In choosing a system, a high probability of catching errors is traded off against implementation difficulty; simple check digit systems are easily understood and implemented by humans but do not catch as many errors as complex ones, which require sophisticated programs to implement.

This video explains how to find the check digit for an ISBN 10 number.
Check digits refer to the single character hanging out at the end of your identification card number, or your car plate number. What does it do, and how is it derived? We learn about all this today!
This video explains how to find the check digit for a UPC number.
Here we look at an application of modular arithmetic: check-digit schemes in identification numbers like ISBNs on books or postal service UPC codes. Just scored this meter from eBay, managed to get a good deal and it just arrived a couple of days ago so time to open up the box and see what I have The add implied it may have a fault and only specified it would power on and that there may be an issue with overload. Therefor got it for a good price So as you will see, I ended up with a winner, not only was it fully functional but on first look, pretty accurate too (Compared to my 4.5 Digit Agilent 1272A anyway). I took it for a spin through all the ranges using various supplies and my Vishay Precision Resistance standard, and while I have no way right now to confirm the accuracy or calibrate it. It seems to be very accurate and on resistance, surprised me, especially in 4 terminal measurement mode. Not bad for a meter over 30 years old ...

Credit cards numbers are not random, they go off an alogorithim called the "Luhn". We will be exploring the Luhn alogorithim, and use JavaScript to implement it to test credit card numbers. This is a very simple alogorithim and is widely used. I decided in this tutorial to use a simple approach in solving how to validate credit cards. There are numerous ways to do this. In part 2 you will be revisiting luhn and creating a new javascript function that will display the credit card name, such as "visa" or "mastercard." Part 2 will be uploaded really soon, as soon as I am done configuring it. Thank you. Stipped down JSFiddle only contains the basic HTML and JavaScript to get started https://jsfiddle.net/dm1pynL7/6/ Solution JSFiddle https://jsfiddle.net/5pk9tx7o/1/
