Casa grande (sugar plantation)

The Casa Grande (Portuguese and Spanish: "big house") was the Brazilian equivalent of a Southern plantation in the United States. These Casas Grandes were predominantly located in the northeast of Brazil (areas such as present day Bahia and Pernambuco). Additionally, sugar cane was grown in the interior, in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

The Casa Grande was made up of three main components: the Big House, the senzala (slave quarters), and the engenho (sugar cane mill). The master of sugar production was called the senhor de engenho ("master of the sugar works"). His word was final, and he had control over the land, the slaves, and the women who made up the plantation community.

It is said that the biggest Casa Grande was bigger than Portugal itself. The larger Casas Grandes were self-sustaining, since they were isolated from the more developed coastal regions. Essential structures that were built included the school, the nursery, the infirmary, the family chapel, the master’s harem, the bank, and the cemetery. In the early days it was necessary to maintain an army on the plantation. Those armies were sometimes very large, having up to one hundred Indians/half-breeds.

Casa Grande, Arizona

Casa Grande (O'odham: Wainom Wo:g) is a city in Pinal County, approximately halfway between Phoenix and Tucson in the U.S. state of Arizona. According to the 2014 census, the population of the city is 51,478. It is named after the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, which is actually located in Coolidge. "Casa Grande" is Spanish for "big house".

History

Casa Grande was founded in 1879 during the Arizona mining boom, specifically due to the presence of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In January 1880, the community of Terminus, meaning "end-of-the-line," was established despite consisting of just five residents and three buildings. In September 1880, railroad executives renamed the settlement Casa Grande, after the Hohokam ruins at the nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Casa Grande grew slowly, and suffered several setbacks both in 1886 and 1893, when fires ravaged the town, destroying all wooden housing structures within it. When the mining boom slowed in the 1890s, the town was nearly abandoned, but with the advent of agriculture, the town remained alive and well, and was eventually incorporated in 1915.

Casa Grande Private Limited is a Chennai-based real estate company. The company develops residential properties like luxury villas and apartments across Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore. Casa Grande has developed over 3 million square feet till date, across 64 projects, and has a projected pipeline of Rs 2,500 crore worth of projects in the financial year 2014-15.

History

Founded in 2004 by M. Arun Kumar and KR Anerudan, Casa Grande Private Limited was primarily funded by Fulcrum Ventures with a seed capital of Rs 5 crore invested in tranches between 2004 and 2006. This initial stake was bought out in 2012 by the promoters by paying Rs. 50 crores, ten times the initial investment.

Recently, in May 2014, Mumbai-based PE fund, Avenue Venture Real estate fund (AVREF) announced that it plans to invest up to Rs 100 crore in equity in Casa Grande, out of which Rs. 53 crore has already been invested over 2 investments.

Lately, the company has launched two new businesses - PropCare and Do My Home, to provide end-to-end solutions for customers. In August 2015, it has also diversified into warehousing with the launch of a 100-acre project called Casa Grande Distripark, to cater to a wide range of businesses including automotive, industrial, retail, healthcare and e-commerce.
