Having worn many hats, Tracy McNally, aka Coogs, has a few tales to tell, most of them too loud and about inappropriate things. In 2018, she donned the spoken word hat and, finding it rather suited her, has staunchly refused to take it off ever since. Tracy is a three-time state finalist in the Australian Poetry Slam competition and regularly features across Adelaide’s open mic poetry scene. She wears her spoken word hat tilted at a jaunty angle while serving dark humour and brutal honesty. Giving voice to shared insecurities and inconvenient truths, Tracy explores influences in her life such as motherhood and mental illness.

Nadia Patterson was a first timer at Spoke N Slurred four years ago, and has since been a friendly face as she makes her name across town at various open mics ever since. She has been writing short stories and poetry since she was a kid on the west coast of South Australia, and since joining us here in the big smoke she has been published by the likes of Porridge Magazine, Tunnel Vision and was the winner of the 2020 Mindshare Awards in the Published Established Poets category. Along with her words Nadia creates art pieces of different mediums as a visual accompaniment to her poetry which you can find on Instagram at @fastwords223. Nadia has been a regular feature across different Paroxysm events since she first attended those four years ago, and she’s back at it this month at Spoke N Slurred with some new works to evoke all kinds of emotion. It would be a shame for you to miss it.

Cecilia Ronson performed Spoken Word poetry for the first time in 2020. Motivated to have a “Taylor Swift” moment, the spontaneous sign up ultimately ended up being the best thing she has ever done. In her short career Cecilia has already performed multiple times, including two occasions on Radio Adelaide. Her segment on the radio inspired the station to create a whole segment on poetry and have now opened opportunities to local acts. The connection she has with the Adelaide poetry community mostly stems from Mixed Bag Poetry. MBP is an open mic night that debuted in October 2020. Once a month she takes the stage to perform her original work and to host the night. Her time running MBP has sparked a new appreciation to listening to poetry and never wanting to stop learning. She has also been fortunate enough to feature at Social Hearts Club, a poetry night that she has supported and had worked collaboratively with MBP. Cecilia will not define her poetry style anytime soon, just like her identity, sexuality and personality, she is still learning what it is.

Carissa Fischer is a performance poet, born and raised in roaring Radelaide. With the use of lyrical language, upbeat tone and metaphoric prose, they explore intersectional identities, and how to navigate these landscapes in their self described coming of age journey. Creating poems and writing creatively since age 15, Carissa has immersed themselves in the poetry scene. Testing the waters, they performed at FEAST’s Queer Youth Underground in 2018 and 2019, officially debuting in 2019 as a feature poet at Draw Your (S)words. They have since performed at the University’s Senior College Fringe Showcase 2020, and spoke at Better Together, closing the national conference with a poetry set. Still navigating the poetry scene, and coming into their own as an artist, Carissa views their poems as a work in progress.
