Review- ‘Makhno: Ukrainian Freedom Fighter’

Review- ‘Makhno: Ukrainian Freedom Fighter’

From Aotearoa Workers Solidarity Movement by Urcuchillay

Ukraine has become a focus of attention lately due to the war there. For many this will be a temporary and superficial interest, related to the duration of that conflict and media interest in it. Clashes between nation-states and their elites is a deeply saddening feature of today’s world. Such a war brings up the question whether some better alternative is available? There are contemporary alternatives, but its also possible to look at the past for inspiration. In the case of Ukraine, there is a set of interesting historical events that do provide bits and pieces that suggest another way of being.

Italian Anarchist Federation Statement on the War in Ukraine

From Anarchist Communist Group UK

ACG comments:
Whilst the ACG approves of this Manifesto overall, internal discussions have highlighted some concerns over the use of the term “revolutionary defeatism”. We feel that the document would benefit from either clearer definition of what is meant by the term, or possibly the use of a different term. For us ‘revolutionary defeatism’ can only mean a refusal to call off the class war in the name of ‘national unity’ during a war between states. However it is possible to interpret ‘revolutionary defeatism’ as meaning that the organised working class within a state should work towards the military defeat of that state’s national forces by an enemy state.

“Car Culture”: Just Stop

"Fire that destroyed nearly 4,000 cars at RSW rental lot, causing $100M in damage ruled an accident"

[T]the point is that a future anarchist society with an irrelevantly small fleet of automobiles is entirely possible, without the need to prohibit automobiles in a rather un-anarchic way. I should expect this fleet to comprise farm trucks and other utilitarian vehicles, a handful of emergency vehicles, and a bewildering array of pleasure vehicles, sports cars, specials, speedsters, motorcycles, trikes, motorsport vehicles, off-road vehicles, and all manner of rolling artworks the significations of which are incomprehensible outside their specific contexts — and that is not only perfectly fine, it is vibrancy, creativity, expression, and fun. There is no need to maintain the least semblance of sneering contempt lest suffering all this to exist result in smog, exurban isolation, and pandemic road deaths all over again. That much should be obvious, if popular car culture does not cause institutional car culture.

From Act for Freedom Now!

The horrors of war move sensitie souls. Instead, we are reminded that it is injustice that dominates this world. The mangled bodies are always those of the poor people, it’s never a rich man to die, to lose a hand.

Reflections on Anarchist Tendencies and Mutualist History

Reflections on Anarchist Tendencies and Mutualist History

From Libertarian Labyrinth by Shawn P. Wilbur

What follows is a long Twitter thread, originally intended for the audience there as a response to certain criticisms of the historical account developed by myself and others regarding mutualism. It’s a mix of reflections on our search for the perhaps ultimately illusory core of “the mutualism tradition” and thoughts on how to apply the lessons learned in the course of that exploration.

Sugako – Advance 2021

The lyrics are concerned with the name sake of the group, Kanno Sugako, a Japanese anarchist journalist interested in the liberation of women and humanity as a whole. She was executed by hanging on January 25, 1911 by the Japanese government due to her connections to the High Treason Incident, a plot by a group of socialists and anarchist to assassinate the Emperor Meiji. 26 people were arrested of which twelve were hanged to death despite the lack of direct evidence. Two more were sentenced to eight and eleven years of prison respectively and the remaining twelve were sentenced to life imprisonment. Sugako was the last person to be killed.

Beneath the Concrete, the Forest

Accounts from the Defense of the Atlanta Forest

In Atlanta, Georgia, the city government intends to destroy large swaths of what remains of the South River Forest—also known by the Muskogee name for the river, Weelaunee. In place of one stretch of woods, they aim to build a police training compound; they have sold the neighboring part to Blackhall Studios executive Ryan Millsap, who intends to build a giant soundstage. Yet for more than a year now, activists have protected the forest against their plans.
