Obviously, part of the reason the games I mentioned became institutions is that they existed in a time before economies could support giant companies mass producing copies of thousands of different titles every year. When someone made a great game, it was THE GAME (or one of few) in that time and place.

But setting aside the hurdles of "getting there" in the 21st century, which game(s) would be deserving of that kind of timeless constancy, and why?

Saw this idea for movies and bands and thought it might work for our favorite — board games. Just name 2 board games that you enjoy and folks will recommend a 3rd that is (hopefully) new to you inspired by what you already like. And go!

Edit: Wow! This is way more fun than expected and there are some PERFECT answers to bridge some obscure games… Maybe Tom Vasel and his friends can answer some of these bc they’re too hard for me, but there’re some very impressive brains on this sub!!

Next edit: TY ALL SO MUCH for participating and generating some amazing new game ideas for people. Some folks have sent messages of gratitude for the great content that you’re all providing for their search of new games experiences. Great job to the community’s brain trust!!

I’m looking for an org or club to enjoy some harmless and non-academic board games to pass some time and give me opportunities to make some friends at UT.

Tossing this out to the r/gis crowd: anyone at the UC and want to do an adhoc meet up and talk about GIS/mapping in tabletop gaming? I'd love to hear about how you use GIS in your D&D campaign, or the map you made for a boardgame, or anything else in that nerdy GIS space.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll try to organize a meetup Wed or Thursday.

EDIT: alright, here's the suggested plan: let's meet up Wed July 14 at 7:30pm (or after, if you are attending another social) at Coin Op Game Room, 789 Sixth Ave. Consider it the unofficial D&D social that Esri forgot to schedule... Your quest is to find the tall guy with a beard.

And if folks aren't into that plan, just let me know; I'm happy to meet up around 5pm at the conference center too/instead... Whatever folks are comfortable with.

Feel free to message me if you are having trouble finding us. Looking forward to nerding out with you all!

EDIT2: I really appreciated the evening, and those who came to hang out! Y'all are great folks. Let's coordinate something for next year again.
