FRIEZE ART FAIR NEW YORK 2019
James Kalm has been visiting and documenting the FRIEZE art fair since its arrival here in New York in 2012. This year, your correspondent returns for a walk-through tour, and notes some interesting developments in the presentation, the list of featured artists, and the inclusion of an “outsider art” section. Because this program is nearly one hour twenty minutes long, and contains views of dozens of works, this description must be thankfully abbreviated. That said, a few points of interest might be: A Knox Martin booth by Hollis Taggart, a wall of works on paper and paintings by Steven Parrino at Gagosian, and a selection of works on paper from 1970 by William T. Williams at Michael Rosenfeld. This program was recorded May 5, 2019.

A New Reality: Frieze London & Frieze Masters 2020
Introducing ‘A New Reality’, a fair presentation which explores the blurred gap between how we experience the real and virtual worlds. Visitors can journey into the iconic Frieze tents in Regent’s Park to explore exact replicas of last year’s booths that now exist in a virtual world. Powered by HWVR, the presentation calls into question where the real ends and the virtual begins. The featured works are simultaneously on view in physical locations at Hauser & Wirth’s global spaces and artists’ studios. Since the virtual world no longer has to mirror the real world, this presentation aims to expand the limits of how we can experience an artwork today.

Frieze Masters 2020 - Ben Enwonwu (1917 - 1994)
Nigeria’s kó gallery debuts at Frieze Masters, presenting pioneering
African modernist Ben Enwonwu (1917-1994).
While the unprecedented challenges brought forth by the coronavirus have cancelled
the physical edition of Frieze London and Frieze Masters this year, kó will participate in
the online edition of the Frieze Viewing Room, 9-16 October 2020. The project is
included in the Spotlight section, which features solo presentations by ground-breaking
artists of the twentieth century.
Ben Enwonwu was the first artist from the African continent to gain global visibility.

Cahaya Mu Kekasih
Aku yang meniti masa

Perjalanan ku tiba di persimpangan dunia
Kembara sementara di taman harapan dan rahsia
Tangisan dan tawa ku lewati
Kalimah suciMu bertakhta di hati

Working as a painter and sculptor throughout Nigeria’s colonial, independence, and
post-independence periods, he formed a unique modernist language that speaks to
the country’s culture and national identity.
At Frieze, kó will present twelve works in oil, gouache, and wood and bronze sculpture
by Enwonwu spanning the years 1940-1980. The selection focuses on several
recurring themes in the artist’s work: dances, performances and masquerades,
reflective of the movements of Negritude and Pan-Africanism.
