How do I pray to not think of my (28F) boyfriend (29M) In a sexual way? by Ok_Use4486 in Christianmarriage

[–]maikelele20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's honestly a very bad reason not to get married. Maybe I'm just biased as my wife and got married during covid and didn't spend a cent on our wedding. I perceive this arguement as viewing the ceremony, that only lasts a day mind you, as an idol that you are valuing higher than the health of your relationship.

Yeah 2 years is not rushing, it's actually being slow to marry. Sounds like a committed relationship and emotional connection of a marriage. Time to tie the knot and stop fightly the sexual connection. Trying to stop it is not healthy at this point and will only damage the relationship.

The Minnesota House and Senate have now both passed a law to set minimum pay rates for Uber and Lyft drivers. Uber threatened to leave parts of the state over the legislation. Drivers celebrated one of the bill's sponsors @OmarFatehMN after it passed. by theworkeragency in antiwork

Then the drivers won't have jobs which is kind of important otherwise they would have left for a higher paying one already. Hope they stay and pay the higher wages but if the business model doesn't make sense, the drivers will be out of work.

The Statement on Christian Nationalism & the Gospel by redroost32 in Reformed

[–]maikelele20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe the Puritan experiment in the 17th century serves as a great example of the potential pitfalls of such an approach.

The Puritans attempted to enforce strict moral and religious codes through the government, which led to widespread resentment and backlash among the populace. This ultimately contributed to the fall of Puritan rule and the restoration of the monarchy in England. The attempt to legislate morality through government power proved to be ineffective and even counterproductive, as it generated resistance and dissent, rather than fostering greater adherence to religious ideals.

It highlighted the tension between individual freedom and government authority, as well as the importance of maintaining a clear separation between church and state in the founding of the USA. While it is natural for individuals and communities to want to promote their beliefs and values, the use of government power to enforce morality can lead to unintended consequences and undermine the very ideals it seeks to promote.

It is important for Christians to exercise discernment and wisdom in engaging with political issues, recognizing the limitations of government power and the need for individuals to take personal responsibility for their beliefs and actions.

The American Revolution: Shameful or Supported? by PolyWannaKraken in Reformed

[–]maikelele20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are a few quotes and writings from prominent Presbyterians of the time that offer justifications for the American Revolution:

  1. John Witherspoon, a Presbyterian minister and signer of the Declaration of Independence, wrote in his sermon "The Dominion of Providence Over the Passions of Men" (May 17, 1776):

"It is certainly lawful to resist the unjust violence of tyrants, and the violence of a whole people united together in a just and necessary cause cannot possibly be unjust. [...] [The colonists] have been driven to the unhappy necessity of taking up arms in their own defense, and have exerted themselves with courage and resolution, without being guilty of anything that deserves the name of rebellion."

  1. The Rev. Samuel West, a prominent Congregationalist minister and ally of the Presbyterians, wrote in his sermon " On the Right to Rebel Against Governors" (1776):

"When rulers become absolute and tyrannical, when they are deaf to the voice of reason, and dead to the feelings of humanity, they may be resisted, and even punished, for such resistance is not only warranted by natural justice, but also by the express precepts of Christianity."

  1. The Rev. John Joachim Zubly, a Swiss-born Presbyterian minister and member of the Continental Congress, wrote in his "Address to the People of Georgia" (1775):

"When the good of the whole is invaded, every individual owes to the state and to posterity, his best services in their defense; and when the authority of a king or of a people is employed against their essential interests, such an authority may and ought to be withstood."

Many Presbyterians at the time believed that the Revolution was justified and necessary for the preservation of their liberties and rights as British citizens. They argued that the British government had violated the principles of the English constitution by denying the colonists their rights of representation and due process of law.

Presbyterians, who valued individual conscience and representative government, believed that the colonists had a right to resist the tyranny of the British government. They saw the American Revolution as a legitimate expression of their right to self-determination and self-government.

Moreover, many Presbyterians were actively involved in the Revolutionary movement. Presbyterian ministers, such as the Rev. John Witherspoon, were signatories to the Declaration of Independence and played key roles in organizing and mobilizing support for the Revolution. Presbyterian congregations also provided financial and material support for the Continental Army.

From a Presbyterian viewpoint, the American Revolution was a necessary and justifiable response to the British government's violations of individual rights and liberties. The ideals of the Revolution, such as the principles of democracy and the rule of law, align with Presbyterian beliefs in representative government and individual conscience. Therefore, it is likely that many Presbyterians at the time would have supported the need to revolt and the resulting establishment of a more just system.

Acts 1:1‭-‬9 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
