In addition- Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge were initially supported by Communist North Vietnam and Mao’s Chinese Communist Party in the 60s. North Vietnam had even allied with the Khmer Rouge against the Lon Nol govt in the Cambodian Civil War.

However KR-NV relations soured in the mid 70s due to the internal suspicions and paranoia that went with the power struggles. Also US financial and military support must’ve been the clincher.

I think I know a thing or two about the Khmer Rouge having lived in Cambodia for quite a while. Pol Pot might’ve been supported by the CIA to fight North Vietnam during the American War in Vietnam… But he was definitely a communist on paper, and in practice- he applied an extreme totalitarian form of communism in his own way. Similarly- Stalin, Mao, Kim had their own versions of extreme communism. The key thing is none of them practiced true or perfect communism but rather their own versions of it.

Some points about Pol Pot indicating this-

Pol turned Cambodia to a one-party communist state.
He believed in a rural state controlled agrarian economy and collectivisation of the Cambodian population into this rural state controlled agriculture sector.
Private property was outlawed.

So it was super far from the communism as Marx envisioned it (especially given Pol culled like a quarter of the Khmer populace). But it was Pol Potist Communism if not Marxist Communism.
