This isn't really all that uncommon. Rape cases get thrown out for stupid reasons constantly. It's one of many contributory factors that leads to fewer women coming forward about rapes.

Just gonna go ahead and lock this thread to keep men from commenting, I don't think we need to hear their opinions this time around.

the r/mademesmile mods ban users that frequent other subs they don't like

r/mademesmile gets brigaded a lot by subreddts that "don't like" what gets posted on mademesmile. The admins don't give us very many tools to handle those brigades, so we've had to resort to just banning large swaths of their subreddit members to get the brigades to stop.

We're always amenable in modmail to lifting the bans, assuming their first reaction isn't to call us cucks or something else equally uninspired. For those we just archive and ignore.

You're exactly right. We aren't banning those words themselves, what we're banning is their use as a pejorative/slur. So you can use the words, you just can't use them as an attack on certain demographics.

Obviously we have to handle every comment on a case-by-case basis, but some are much more clear-cut than others. Typically this joke takes the form of "I identify as a helicopter" but more lately it's antivaxxers saying "I identify as a vaccinated person", or people simultaneously mocking Rachael Dolezal and trans people by saying "I identify as black". Usually it's obvious if they're being facetious or not. "I identify as bi" would be a typical way to use the term, but "I identify as a 1984 supercomputer" would obviously be included in the "ridiculous" category.

As always, we take context into account to see if it's someone just joking around in a good faith way, or if they're doing it in a mocking way to disparage already disparaged groups.

And to be clear, we're not banning every instance of every usage of every word here, we're banning their use as pejoratives/slurs, and their use as ways to attack certain demographics.
