China crushes mass demonstration by bank depositors demanding their life savings back by IanMazgelis in news

[–]IanMazgelis[S] 104 points105 points  (0 children)

The demonstration is among the largest China has seen since the pandemic, with domestic travel limited by various Covid restrictions on movement. Last month, Zhengzhou authorities even resorted to tampering with the country’s digital Covid health-code system to restrict the movements of depositors and thwart their planned protest, sparking a nationwide outcry.

Would anyone like to feign surprise that a governing body would abuse public health restrictions as an excuse to shut down resistance to the interests of the extremely wealthy? I offer up this comment chain as a place to pretend we didn't all see this coming.

I'm pretty sure this thread is a lot of kids who either grew up right next to the ocean or hundreds of miles away from any running body of water who are just now realizing that "Freshwater and Saltwater" aren't the only two kinds of water.

Stagnant, still water is not safe and never has been. This is not a novel concept to the 21st century. There's a reason the phrase "Running water" instinctively makes you feel more assured. You really don't hear about these kinds of things happening in flowing rivers, oceans, ponds, anything. It's always some isolated body of still water in the middle of nowhere where things don't need to work around an active ecosystem to thrive, that isn't safe for us.

It's upsetting that the Nocturnus were in such a genuinely abysmal game. They're a cool concept.

Educators no longer need a college degree to begin teaching in Arizona public schools by MhmmMuffin in nottheonion

[–]IanMazgelis 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Who in the world could have predicted that "You need six years of education to make $45,000 a year and deal with mentally unstable children all day" would eventually lead to a dwindling labor pool?

Teaching is no longer seen as a noble pursuit. It's basically viewed as being a salaried babysitter now. I went to one of the better high schools and took the AP classes, which were supposed to simulate a college education, but even back then there was an unspoken understanding that our real education wouldn't begin until after we graduated.

The people in charge of school districts, and arguably a lot of people funding the system, just don't view teachers as the source for their children's education anymore, they view them as the people who watch the kids while their parents are at work.

If you want to help someone understand something you're passionate about, screaming at them about how smart you are is pretty much the last thing you should do.

Hey I don't disagree. The movies should be better. I just tend to like a lot of the comic books and some of the cartoons more. I can't make excuses for directors doing a shitty job with the character, but in my opinion that reflects more poorly on them than on Batman.

Hideo Kojima Misidentified As Shinzo Abe Assassin By News Channel, Politicians by Scipio555 in PS5

[–]IanMazgelis 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I have to wonder, did his fans jokingly post the image of him as a picture of the assassin? It's possible someone joking around did this on their Twitter in the way OneyPlays fans joke about Joshua Tomar being a dangerous lunatic, then someone who didn't realize it was a joke saw the post and just took it at face value.

I'm pretty sure Sam Hyde's fans do this too, but I've never really seen his videos, my boyfriend just showed me a lot of the jokes about him. I'm pretty sure there have been instances of local channels reporting on joke images of him as being authentic pictures of some kind of unidentified mass killer or person of interest.

I have to say, when this happens, I really don't blame the fans. You can argue it's shitty of them to make jokes about tragedies, but they're ultimately just normal people with their own jobs and lives making jokes online. It's the job of a news agency to report facts. When they see a picture of Tomar, Hyde, or Kojima that someone made as a joke and just assume it has to be true, they're not doing their job at all. It makes you wonder how thoroughly they check any of their facts.

New York law requires gun permit applicants to submit social media accounts for review by Sorin61 in technology

Imagine if Ron DeSantis passed legislation that if Florida's government doesn't like what you've been posting online, you don't get to vote anymore.

[–]IanMazgelis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure New York's state government would be okay with telling you it's illegal to buy a gun if you haven't had a continuously active Facebook since you were in high school. I mean, everyone involved knows the Supreme Court is shooting this down, possibly even in a unanimous vote if that's still possible, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if there were a provision that they deny people who can't abide by this law.

First, second, fourth, and arguably fifth. If New York is allowed to say "You don't get to exercise your second amendment rights because you like gangster rap," that's an explicit first amendment violation.

You could also argue that people are being made to incriminate themselves through this law, but I think three constitutional violations is more than enough for the Supreme Court to toss it in the trash where it belongs. From what I've been reading in the past couple days, it sounds like it'll have a comfy spot next to the 1934 Firearms Act.

I'm really disappointed that New York's elected officials couldn't get creative enough to violate the first five constitutionally protected rights in one law. You couldn't have thrown in some provision that national guard gets to stay the night while they go through your emails or something?

Realistically it's going to be something we aren't familiar with since our familiarity with Japanese culture only comes from their cultural exports like anime and video games. People in this thread are positing the Illuminati and World Economic Forum because, unsurprisingly, they're thinking about it from the perspective of American schizophrenics rather than Japanese schizophrenics. Japanese schizophrenics probably don't think about Schwab and Soros too much, I'm sure they have their own scary "final bosses."
