Air mass (solar energy)

The air mass coefficient defines the direct optical path length through the Earth's atmosphere, expressed as a ratio relative to the path length vertically upwards, i.e. at the zenith. The air mass coefficient can be used to help characterize the solar spectrum after solar radiation has traveled through the atmosphere. The air mass coefficient is commonly used to characterize the performance of solar cells under standardized conditions, and is often referred to using the syntax "AM" followed by a number. "AM1.5" is almost universal when characterizing terrestrial power-generating panels.

Description

Solar radiation closely matches a black body radiator at about 5,800 K. As it passes through the atmosphere, sunlight is attenuated by scattering and absorption; the more atmosphere through which it passes, the greater the attenuation.

As the sunlight travels through the atmosphere, chemicals interact with the sunlight and absorb certain wavelengths. Perhaps the best known example is the stripping of ultraviolet light by ozone in the upper atmosphere, which dramatically reduces the amount of short-wavelength light reaching the Earth's surface. A more active component of this process is water vapor, which results in a wide variety of absorption bands at many wavelengths, while molecular nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide add to this process. By the time it reaches the Earth's surface, the spectrum is strongly confined between the far infrared and near ultraviolet.

Mass (Stravinsky)

Igor Stravinsky composed his Mass between 1944 and 1948. This 19-minute setting of the Roman Catholic Mass exhibits the austere, Neoclassic, anti-Romantic aesthetic that characterizes his work from about 1923 to 1951. The Mass also represents one of only a handful of extant pieces by Stravinsky that was not commissioned. As such, part of the motivation behind its composition has been cited by Robert Craft and others as the product of a spiritual necessity.

History

Stravinsky completed the Gloria on December 20, 1944 and finished the Kyrie at about the same time. His work on the Mass was then interrupted for several years in which his wrote his Symphony, Ebony Concerto, Concerto in D, and the ballet Orpheus. He resumed work on it in the fall of 1947 and completed it March 15, 1948.

On February 26, 1947, Irving Fine conducted the Kyrie and Gloria, accompanied by two pianos. The first complete performance occurred on October 27, 1948 in Milan. Ernest Ansermet conducted members of the chorus and orchestra of La Scala.

AIR (nightclub)

AIR was a 2,000 capacity superclub located in Digbeth, Birmingham in England. AIR originally started out life as a spray shop for buses, when in 2000 the building was bought by Godskitchen and converted into a club, originally named CODE. In 2003, CODE had a complete refit and was renamed AIR, with an extra room of music being added to the two already in use. The club features state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems and in addition to Saturday nights Godskitchen AIR has hosted parties by Helter Skelter, Babooshka, Polysexual, Raveology, Hardcore Til I Die & Atomic Jam.

AIR is situated in an area of Digbeth synonymous with club culture, the "Custard Factory Quarter", named after the nearby Custard Factory, a centre for music and arts. Adjacent to the Custard Factory is the HMV Institute (formerly the Digbeth Institute), the original home of Godskitchen.

The 20-year lease contract originally taken out by Angel Music Group still remains in place but since 6 May 2012 the club has remained closed due to the slow demise of the Godskitchen brand caused mainly by a lack of direction and leadership and the high costs imposed by the Custard Factory landlords making it far cheaper to keep the doors closed than to open them.

Air 26

Air26 - Linhas Aéreas, S.A. was an airline based in Luanda, Angola. Founded in 2006, it operates domestic passenger and cargo flights out of the city's Quatro de Fevereiro Airport. Along with all other Angolan airlines except for TAAG, Air 26 is banned from operating within the European Union. In 2010, the company had its licence revoked, but it was re-issued on 31 January 2011.

AIR 107.2

AIR 107.2 is the community radio station for Weymouth and Portland. All content is broadcast from its studios in Weymouth via its transmitter located at Wyke Regis.

AIR stands for All Inclusive Radio. AIR began its life as a student radio station, streaming online and to Westfield Arts College.
It soon grew and pulled together students from across the locale to jointly broadcast on AIR. Students work towards nationally recognized accreditations whilst having the opportunity to gain real media experience.

2011

AIR began streaming via its website on Wednesday 11 May 2011. The station was endorsed by many celebrities including Chris Evans, Jonathan Ross, Lorraine Kelly, Carol Vorderman, Chris Jarvis and many more.
The station was officially opened by BBC Radio 1 veteran, Ed Stewart.
On the launch day of AIR - Student Radio, 200 helium filled balloons were released into the air and a live celebratory concert was held on the field of Westfield Arts College.
Many local dignitaries and media representatives attended the launch including; Dorset Echo, BBC Radio Solent, BBC Spotlight, Weymouth View and students from various schools across Dorset.
