Coffea
Coffea is a genus of flowering plants whose seeds, called coffee beans, are used to make coffee. It is a member of the family Rubiaceae. They are shrubs or small trees native to tropical and southern Africa and tropical Asia. Coffee ranks as one of the world's most valuable and widely traded commodity crops and is an important export product of several countries, including those in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa.
Cultivation and use
Several species of Coffea may be grown for the seeds. Coffea arabica accounts for 75-80 percent of the world's coffee production, while Coffea canephora accounts for about 20 percent.
The trees produce edible red or purple fruits called "cherries" that are described either as epigynous berries or as indehiscent drupes. The cherries contain two seeds, the so-called "coffee beans", which—despite their name—are not true beans. In about 5-10% of any crop of coffee cherries, only a single bean, rather than the usual two, is found. This is called a peaberry, which is smaller and rounder than a normal coffee bean. It is often removed from the yield and either sold separately (as in New Guinea peaberry), or discarded.

Plot: What started out as a photography project to experiment developing film using coffee (aka Caffenol method) morphed into a 9 month animation production. The filmmakers developed a story that could be told in their respective locations -James in California and Juli in Arkansas. The idea began with James' recently pulled wisdom teeth and the coffee that would ultimately be used to develop the film. The footage was shot both in California and Arkansas, as well as several states along I-40 while the two traveled from one site to another. All the images were created using a 35mm SLR camera; actors and objects were animated frame by frame to tell the simple story of a girl with a toothache. Each roll of film underwent coffee development and hand processing which is what gives the film its sepia-tinted imperfect look. The images with all their stains and scratches were digitally scanned and the hand-drawn elements were added in the editing process. By exploring old film techniques and adopting a DIY attitude, the filmmakers hope to preserve the organic magic of working with film stock as well as encourage a more tactile approach to creating unique imagery.

Ma qual è la pianta che potremmo identificare come “l’amichevole Spiderman di quartiere”? Quella che rende migliore ogni giorno? Quella che ci assiste e ci supporta in ogni situazione? Non indosserà una maschera ma è comunque degna della fama d’eroe, nonostante questo vi sveleremo la sua identità nascosta, parliamo della Coffea arabica.

Coffea Arabica
La Coffea fa parte della famiglia delle Rubiaceae ed è originaria dell’Etiopia, cresce ai lati delle montagne tropicali, in zone generalmente molto piovose e con molta nebbia. È una perenne sempreverde.
Produce dei frutti, chiamati “drupe”, somiglianti a bacche che dal verde maturano tingendosi di rosso fino a poi raggiungere tonalità tendenti al nero. In Italia, salvo eccezioni per le zone più calde del sud, è molto difficile arrivare alla produzione delle bacche. Ognuna di queste drupe matura poi due semi che una volta trattati e tostati diventeranno i chicchi di caffè a cui siamo tanto affezionati.
Dopo 3-4 anni dà vita, in primavera, a fiori bianchi leggermente profumati, piccoli ma molto graziosi, si presentano infatti come piccole stelle aggrappate ai rami.
È una pianta molto decorativa, con delle foglie verdi e lucide dai bordi arricciati e con una crescita compatta. In natura diventano poi alberi di medie dimensioni, anche se poi i coltivatori le potano in modo da poter essere maggiormente gestibili. Nelle case invece, sempre grazie alla potatura e all’utilizzo di vasi contenuti, possono mantenere dimensioni molto compatte.
La Coffea arabica, coltivata ormai da più di 1000 anni, è la più nota e commercializzata specie di Coffea (rappresenta circa il 60-80% di tutto il caffè consumato nel mondo), in quanto dà vita ad un caffè dalle note zuccherine e fruttate. In realtà però questo genere comprende circa 120 specie. Un’altra specie abbastanza famosa è la C. canephora, conosciuta anche come Coffea robusta, la quale produce un caffè dal gusto più forte e duro.
Prendersi cura della Coffea arabica
La Coffea arabica è una pianta piuttosto semplice e resistente, possiede anche una lunga vita, anche se non aspettatevi di potervi produrre il vostro caffè, come abbiamo già detto, difficilmente in Italia riuscirà a produrre le drupe, anche se vi sarete presi cura di lei come dei provetti coltivatori.

Coffea Arabica
La Coffea fa parte della famiglia delle Rubiaceae ed è originaria dell’Etiopia, cresce ai lati delle montagne tropicali, in zone generalmente molto piovose e con molta nebbia. È una perenne sempreverde.
Produce dei frutti, chiamati “drupe”, somiglianti a bacche che dal verde maturano tingendosi di rosso fino a poi raggiungere tonalità tendenti al nero. In Italia, salvo eccezioni per le zone più calde del sud, è molto difficile arrivare alla produzione delle bacche. Ognuna di queste drupe matura poi due semi che una volta trattati e tostati diventeranno i chicchi di caffè a cui siamo tanto affezionati.
Dopo 3-4 anni dà vita, in primavera, a fiori bianchi leggermente profumati, piccoli ma molto graziosi, si presentano infatti come piccole stelle aggrappate ai rami.
È una pianta molto decorativa, con delle foglie verdi e lucide dai bordi arricciati e con una crescita compatta. In natura diventano poi alberi di medie dimensioni, anche se poi i coltivatori le potano in modo da poter essere maggiormente gestibili. Nelle case invece, sempre grazie alla potatura e all’utilizzo di vasi contenuti, possono mantenere dimensioni molto compatte.
La Coffea arabica, coltivata ormai da più di 1000 anni, è la più nota e commercializzata specie di Coffea (rappresenta circa il 60-80% di tutto il caffè consumato nel mondo), in quanto dà vita ad un caffè dalle note zuccherine e fruttate. In realtà però questo genere comprende circa 120 specie. Un’altra specie abbastanza famosa è la C. canephora, conosciuta anche come Coffea robusta, la quale produce un caffè dal gusto più forte e duro.
Prendersi cura della Coffea arabica
La Coffea arabica è una pianta piuttosto semplice e resistente, possiede anche una lunga vita, anche se non aspettatevi di potervi produrre il vostro caffè, come abbiamo già detto, difficilmente in Italia riuscirà a produrre le drupe, anche se vi sarete presi cura di lei come dei provetti coltivatori.

Coffea
Coffea is a genus of flowering plants whose seeds, called coffee beans, are used to make coffee. It is a member of the family Rubiaceae. They are shrubs or small trees native to tropical and southern Africa and tropical Asia. Coffee ranks as one of the world's most valuable and widely traded commodity crops and is an important export product of several countries, including those in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa.
Cultivation and use
Several species of Coffea may be grown for the seeds. Coffea arabica accounts for 75-80 percent of the world's coffee production, while Coffea canephora accounts for about 20 percent.
The trees produce edible red or purple fruits called "cherries" that are described either as epigynous berries or as indehiscent drupes. The cherries contain two seeds, the so-called "coffee beans", which—despite their name—are not true beans. In about 5-10% of any crop of coffee cherries, only a single bean, rather than the usual two, is found. This is called a peaberry, which is smaller and rounder than a normal coffee bean. It is often removed from the yield and either sold separately (as in New Guinea peaberry), or discarded.
