Quotes:
6: It's not the naked body that's exciting. It's the possibility.
6: Sex is biology. Sex *appeal* is marketing.
Davies: [Offering a competing job] We are hoping that our ridiculous salary package might change your mind.::Scat: Exactly how ridiculous?::Davidson: [Initially trying to control his laughter] I think it's safe to say... [at splits while laughing] very ridiculous.::Davies: [Now laughing out loudly] It's preposterous!
[first lines]::Scat: Marketing 101: if you live in any major city, you see 800 ads a day. In most of them, models are going to be looking at you like they want to fuck you. You're so used to this that you don't even notice it. But your body does. Your heart rate increases, you pupils dilate, you breathe faster, you become more alert. You've been tapped. Looking at billboards is supposed to feel like love at first sight. But it's not real love, it's just marketing. And without that, you wouldn't even know who you are.
Scat: Here's how to spot the difference between art and marketing. Marketing starts with an unfulfilled need in the marketplace, and figures out how to plug it. Art, on the other hand, starts with the idea - figuring out how to sell it comes later on, if at all. This one [art] makes better stuff. But a lot of the time there's no market for it. This one [marketing] makes more money, but a lot of the time the idea sucks. Because you can't force ideas to turn up when you need them. They just do - or they don't.
6: The real question here is, who would you rather have running your marketing department? Someone with integrity, or someone who will do anything to get to the top no matter what the cost... which Scat will also do... But with integrity.
Scat: The success of this product depends on people being shallow, superficial, self-obsessed, greedy, and desperate for attention. This is the American dream in a fucking can.
Scat: You ignore my calls for this?::6: It's not what you think, Scat.::Scat: Of course it's not what I think. 'Cause it's you, you're never what I think.
Scat: I'm in love with a girl, and I don't even know her real name.::Chet: You, my friend, are in love with an image.::Scat: Is that bad?::Chet: Eh... [thinks and then laughs]
[last lines]::Scat: [on billboard in Times Square] Sometimes you need to walk away from that. Because you haven't been changed. You haven't been perfected. You're just drinking the same old stuff. Just a lost soul who's still drinking... syrup.

Plot: Mike Maquinna returns to his home town of Gold River on Vancouver Island to attend the funeral of his father, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations Chief Ambrose Maquinna. With a troubled past including alcoholism, Mike does not intend on staying to claim his rightful place as Chief, but intends on returning to his current life as a logger in Bella Coola. Meanwhile, a lone Orca whale - dubbed Luna by western media - has been spotted in the area, the whale unusually socialized to boats and humans. Luna, suspected to be a missing juvenile from a pod now living south of the area in Puget Sound, becomes a public sensation, both as a spectacle and a human interest story. The Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) administration, led by Ted Jeffries, plans on reuniting Luna with his pod, which means capturing the young Orca. This move by DFO does not sit well with Mike and the band, who see the spirit of Ambrose inhabited within Luna. They feel it best for Luna to decide where he chooses to live. This issue - in combination with caring for a troubled band youth, Adam Ross - reintegrates Mike into his band life. The band does have an ally in local DFO officer Jill Mackay, who - behind the scenes - is continually butting heads with her boss, Jeffries, the public face of the DFO.

Taglines: A clash of two cultures. The freedom of one whale.
Quotes:
Mike Maquinna: As our people count time, we have lived here since the beginning, between the mountains and the sea. To us, two animals are sacred, the whale protects the ocean and the wolf protects the land. When a chief dies his spirit can choose to join with either one.
Mike Maquinna: You know you got enough on your plate ma.::Gloria Maquinna: They'll put him in foster care. Another lost Indian kid in the system. They'll bounce him around 'til he breaks. [speaking about Adam]
Gloria Maquinna: There's always been a Maquinna chief Mike. That's who you are.::Mike Maquinna: I'm a recovering alcoholic, that's who I am.
Mike Maquinna: You know I betcha she has a glass somewhere. [to Adam drinking from a carton]
Young Mike - Age 9: You keep on bringing me here, how come?::Ambrose: It's where you're from. We used to hunt from those canoes back there, we knew how then because we knew who we were. A chief always has to remember who we are.
Adam: Ambrose told me that when a chief dies, his spirit can come back as a whale. Do you think it's true?::Mike Maquinna: He's gone Adam. My father's dead.
Gloria Maquinna: He needs your Tsuu-qiit. Touch his spirit. [praying to Luna for Mike]
Mike Maquinna: How you been?::Lucy: Hey, a whale in the bay keeps the tax-man away, right?
Bill Louis: Must be nice to come home and be hero-for-the-week, huh? [to Mike]
Ernie Ivers: I was just trying to scare him. If I wanted to kill him, you think I would have missed?::Jill Mackay: Your license is suspended for a month. If I see your boat on the water, Ernie, I'll impound it.::Ernie Ivers: I got a right to make a living. That's my right, and you people are supposed to protect it. Why don't you just do your job? [after shooting at Luna]
