The Sports

The Sports were an Australian rock group which performed and recorded between 1976 and 1981. Mainstay members were Stephen Cummings on lead vocals and Robert Glover on bass guitar, with long-term members as Paul Hitchins on drums, Andrew Pendlebury on lead guitar and vocals, and Martin Armiger on guitar. Their style was similar to both 1970s British pub rock bands (such as Brinsley Schwarz) and British new wave (such as Elvis Costello). The Sports' best known singles are "Boys (What Did the Detective Say?)" (March 1978), "When You Walk in the Room" (July), "Who Listens to the Radio?" (November), "Don't Throw Stones" (March 1979), "Strangers on a Train" (March 1980) and "How Come" (March 1981). Their top 20 releases on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart are Don't Throw Stones (February 1979), Suddenly (March 1980) and Sondra (May 1981). In October 2010 Don't Throw Stones was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums.

History

The Sports were formed in 1976 by Stephen Cummings who was the lead singer of Melbourne rockabilly group, The Pelaco Brothers, (which also comprised Joe Camilleri, Peter Lillie and Johnny Topper). The original line-up were Cummings and ex-The Pelaco Brothers band mate, Ed Bates, on guitar, Robert Glover (ex-Myriad) on bass guitar, Jim Niven (ex-The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band) on piano and Paul Hitchins on drums. Their early sets contained covers of Chuck Berry, Billy Emerson, Don Covay, Company Caine and Graham Parker material. Original songs, mostly written by Cummings and Bates, completed their sets. The Sports' debut recording was a four-track extended play, Fair Game, which was released in early 1977 on the independent label, Zac Records. A friend in London posted the record to the New Musical Express (aka NME) which declared it 'Record of the Week'.

The Sports Network

The Sports Network (TSN) is a Canadian English language sports specialty service. Established by the Labatt Brewing Company in 1984 as part of the first group of Canadian specialty cable channels, since 2001, TSN has been majority-owned by communications conglomerate Bell Canada (presently through its broadcasting subsidiary Bell Media) with a minority stake held by ESPN Inc. via a 20% share in the Bell Media subsidiary CTV Specialty Television. TSN is the largest specialty channel in Canada in terms of gross revenue, with a total of $400.4 million in revenue in 2013.

TSN's networks focus on sports-related programming, including live and recorded event telecasts, sports talk shows, and other original programming. TSN was the first, and most recent national cable broadcaster of the National Hockey League in Canada—its stint has been interrupted twice by rival network Sportsnet—most recently as of the 2014-15 season under an exclusive 12-year rights deal. TSN holds regional television rights to three of the NHL's seven Canadian franchises.

The Sports Network (wire service)

Based in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, The Sports Network is a wire service providing sports information in real time. The Sports Network is especially noted for its coverage of the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision in college football; it presents that group's major end-of-season awards—the Walter Payton Award for the top offensive player, the Buck Buchanan Award for the top defensive player, the Jerry Rice Award for the top freshman and the Eddie Robinson Award for the top coach. It serves a list of clients that include Viacom, Yahoo, and the Canadian television channel The Sports Network, and is a partner with United Press International.

Lawsuit

The Sports Network sued Disney in May 2004 over Disney-owned ESPN's illicit usage of Minor League Baseball data and statistics. Both sides settled in January 2005.

Site attack

In April 2008, The Sports Network's online services were shut down by PRC hackers.

Acquisition

On February 10, 2015, The Sports Network was acquired by STATS LLC.

TSN2

TSN2 is a multiplex channel of the Canadian English language Category C cable and satellite specialty service The Sports Network (TSN) that is owned by CTV Specialty Television Inc., a joint venture between Bell Media (80%) and ESPN (20%). It was launched in its current form on August 29, 2008. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) had approved a separate TSN2 channel in 2000, but was never launched due to a prohibition on live programming. The authority for this channel expired in 2004 and was never re-applied for, so the present TSN2 is not directly connected to the 2000 licence.

TSN2 operates under the same CRTC licence for TSN as a whole, which originally meant that TSN2 was restricted to a few hours of live programming a day, with all other programs on a three hour tape delay from what was then TSN's main feed. With the early 2010 implementation of new conditions of licence from the CRTC which permit multiple feeds with no limits on additional programming, the tape delay is no longer observed, and other original or repeat programming from the TSN and ESPN libraries air alongside live events.

The Sports Network is a multi-use indoor arena located in Manassas, Virginia. It has been known for local soccer tournaments held from January to April. It was originally run by Jon Ellis who is a world-renowned soccer coach. Primarily with the US Women's soccer team.
