Ron DeSantis Fights For Free Speech By Banning Teachers Mentioning Slavery And Gay People
First Amendment, how does it go?
Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill is working exactly as intended, which is to say that its wording is so vague and the punishment for violation so draconian that schools are banishing any mention of the existence of homosexuality and gender identity from schools. Because the best policing is the self-policing achieved by scaring the shit out of the citizenry. But don't dare call it censorship!
Florida House Bill 1557, AKA the the Parental Rights in Education Act, goes into effect this Friday. In theory, teachers are only restricted from discussing LGBTQ+ issues with young children.
"Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards," the statute reads.
Astute observers will note that this leaves room for prosecutors, or for parents who have been newly empowered to sue, to file a claim if they believe that students of any age are taught lessons which are "not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate." Whatever that may mean.
The practical effect of the bill is that lawyers are telling teachers to massively curb their speech in an effort to avoid running afoul of this gobbledygook law. WFTV, an ABC affiliate in Orlando, reports that Orange County Public School principals were recently forced to attend a "Camp Legal" last week to help them bring their schools into compliance with the new law:
“According to representatives of the county’s teacher association, teachers and staff members will be disallowed from wearing rainbow articles of clothing, including lanyards distributed by the district last year. Elementary-level teachers reported being discouraged from putting pictures of their same-sex spouse on their desk or talking about them to students.
"Safe Space” stickers aimed at LGBTQ students may have to be removed from doors, teachers will have to report to parents if a student “comes out” to them and they must use pronouns assigned at birth, regardless of what the parents allow, the CTA reported.
Because Republicans are all about free speech, unless someone wants to mention their same-sex spouse or call a kid by their preferred pronouns, in which case it is LOCK HER UP!
And in case it wasn't totally clear that the statute's deliberately nebulous language was causing schools to overcorrect and censor teachers:
In a separate conversation, an OCPS official said the district needed to err on the side of caution until state officials provided more clarity. The strict interpretations, they said, were necessary to protect both students and teachers. The latter could have their teaching licenses revoked if they run afoul of the law, the official said.
Gross!
But wait, because Gov. Ron DeSantis and his christofascist goon squad isn't done yet. The Miami Herald has an absolutely batshit story out today on the governor's Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative. And if the thought of a guy who pretends to slay the critical race theory dragon with a law called the "Stop Woke" Act futzing with your kids' civics curriculum doesn't send a chill up your spine, get a load of this:
The Florida Department of Education is leading the workshops, which were developed with the help of Hillsdale College and other groups. The Bill of Rights Institute, founded by Charles Koch in 1999, is one of those groups. The state aims to train about 2,500 teachers in 10 sessions across the state.
The three-day sessions are voluntary, but teachers get a $700 stipend as an incentive to attend. Under the governor’s civics initiative, teachers this fall will also be eligible for a $3,000 bonus if they complete a 60-hour online course on the new civics standards and earn a “Civics Seal of Excellence Endorsement.”
Teachers who attended the seminar described an almost comical attempt to characterize the separation of church and state as a modern invention, downplay the history of slavery in America, and to enshrine a Thomas-style "originalist" approach to constitutional law as canon.
A review of more than 200 pages of the state’s presentations shows the founding fathers’ intent and the “misconceptions” about their thinking were a main theme of the training. One slide underscored that the “Founders expected religion to be promoted because they believed it to be essential to civic virtue.” Without virtue, another slide noted, citizens become “licentious” and become subject to tyranny.
Another slide highlights three U.S. Supreme Court cases to show when the “Founders’ original intent began to change.” That included the 1962 landmark case that found school-sponsored prayer violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment, which [Nova High School social studies teacher Richard] Judd said trainers viewed as unjust. At one point, the trainers equated it to the 1892 U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Educators report that the curriculum emphasizes that most of the increase in enslaved persons in the country was due not to continued kidnapping of people from Africa, but instead from breeding human beings in captivity on American soil — as if that makes it better.
This slide fails to mention that both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, and omits the sourcing. Perhaps because the actual quote from Washington reads, "With respect to the first, I never mean (unless some particular circumstances should compel me to it) to possess another slave by purchase; it being among my first wishes to see some plan adopted, by the legislature by which slavery in this Country may be abolished by slow, sure, & imperceptable degrees." It comes from a letter written in 1786 in which he discusses being forced to sell "Negroes" to pay off his debts. And indeed, just two years later he accepted 33 enslaved persons in payment of a debt — which is pretty close to a purchase.
As for the Jefferson quote, it came from one of his draft versions of the Declaration of Independence and never made it into statute. Both men died owning dozens of human beings, some of whom were their own children.
But Ron DeSantis has an answer for that and it is to shout nonsense about teachers indoctrinating children.
“I think what parents are doing is they are reorienting the school system away from indoctrination and back towards education, where we have a premium on doing what a core part of education should be,” he told Focus on the Family earlier this month.
Because HEAVEN FORBID anyone use taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate children, right?

Associated Press Discovers Republicans May Not Be Best At Helping Little Babies After All??!!
'Democrats suggest.'
The Associate Press is apparently branching out into the dark comedy business, and seems poised to give Yr Wonkette a run for its money (all of which is donated by our lovely smart readers) in the field of inspiring HOLLOW MORDANT LAUGHTER. See for example this alleged news/analysis piece about the post-Roe political environment, in which the AP reports on how Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) says it's time for lawmakers to “do everything in our power to meet the needs of struggling women and their families so they can choose life.”
Yes, because if there's one thing the Republican Party is known for, it's helping families burdened with the costs of raising a family. Mostly the GOP helps by saying "family" a lot and attacking gay rights, which apparently are a huge burden on American families' budgets.
The AP's dark comedy set starts off with this hilarious riff:
Democrats suggest their rivals are eleventh-hour converts who would offer half-measures at best and voters should judge them accordingly.
“It’s pretty cynical to say you want to do it now,” said Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash. “If it’s a priority, it should have always been a priority and actions really speak louder than words.”
Oh, that's good!
The story continues with the comedy humor. We've highlighted some of the funniest bits here!
GOP leaders have generally opposed Biden’s expansion of the child tax credit — saying it would discourage people from workingdespite evidence to the contrary. Congressional Republicans said the Democrats’ paid family leave plan — which would put the U.S. on par with other wealthy nations — could limit choices for families and crush small businesses. In 2017, House Republicans voted to repeal “Obamacare” and replace it with measures that could have made maternity care optional.
Well look, if you want to support struggling women, you certainly wouldn't give them money, you'd make them prove they're not lazy. That's just logic, so they'll appreciate the value of hard work. If necessary, hard work at two or three minimum wage jobs, which we calculate would make them twice or even three times as appreciative of their opportunities. And if they find some time to actually see the children they're working so hard to feed, they can teach the babies that mama is tired all the time because she is a striver who will be rich just as soon as her employers get another tax cut.
The AP segues into another hilarious, if edgy, comic bit:
An Associated Press analysis earlier this year found that states with the strictest abortion laws — often led by Republicans — generally provide far less support to parents and children, usually leading to more poverty and worse health outcomes.
We LOVE observational comedy, especially when it's backed by data.
Then, in the audience-participation part of the routine, the AP sought comment from pro-family, pro-women legislators! And wow, do they ever come through!
In response to AP’s findings, many conservative state lawmakers said women can give their newborns up for adoption and said they would support funding increases for foster-care programs.
Pregnant? Scared? (White?) If you really love your kids, you'll give them to someone else!
A Scott spokesperson explained the senator would help out struggling parents by
removing work requirements for parents with children under the age of 6 who live in public housing and receive food aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
And golly, that ought to take care of the problem! In another sharply satirical observation, the AP notes that Scott's very own tax the poor plan
says that no federal program or tax laws should reward people for being unmarried and that the federal government should pay all costs for unwed mothers who put their children up for adoption, among other policies.
Families that adopt children are eligible for big tax credits, so that's clearly a better deal than giving tax credits for slutty unmarried parents to raise their own children and probably do it wrong.
We're really looking forward to the AP's next comedy special, which with material like this may offer a nice PG-rated alternative to Wonkette, because we tend to say "fuck" too much, especially when reading about Republican plans to "help" poor families by disintegrating them entirely.

Who's Grooming These Rightwing Creeps Who Terrify Kids At Library Story Hour?
Some people were just not brought up right.
Rightwing creeps continue to try to scare children and parents at public library story events, with at least three such incidents over the weekend. At one, outside Reno in Sparks, Nevada, a member of a small group of white supremacists protesting the event approached the library while carrying a rifle, causing parents and kids to flee inside the library. But at two other drag queen story time events, in Sacramento, California, and in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas, LGBTQ and allied counter-protesters vastly outnumbered the rightwing creeps and shielded the kids from them.
As Yr Wonkette has noted, far-Right groups have taken to threatening, harassing, and planning attacks on LGBTQ people during Pride Month, following the lead of Republican Party efforts to stir up anti-LGBTQ hatred to motivate its basest voters. It's encouraging to see more people turning out to say HELL. NO.

Nevada
In Sparks, a small group — video shows about six — of protesters affiliated with the white power Proud Boys hate group picketed a Drag Queen Story Time event at the Sparks Library Sunday afternoon. They shouted Christian nationalist sentiments at parents and children such as "Shame on you for bringing you children to this!" and "You're sick!"
Reno TV station KRXI reports about 60 families attended the two story times at the library, the third year the Pride Month event has been held since 2019 (we'd say "annual," but hey, pandemic). The kids had a fine old time being read to by drag performer Miss Ginger.
“#DragQueenStoryTime was a success! Sparks families came out today to meet Miss Ginger and join in the fun. Special thanks to Austin from @SenCortezMasto’s office for presenting Ginger with a very special proclamation! What an honor on this fabulous day! 🌈📚”— Washoe County Library (@Washoe County Library) 1656281238
Police were monitoring the protest from a distance in parked vehicles, but left as the event ended. Shortly after police left, one of the protesters walked toward the library carrying a rifle, prompting parents and kids leaving the event to run back into the library. A library employee, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation from extremists (yes, that's a sentence we now have to write in the USA), said, "We had some people who were visibly shaken and sobbing. [...] We brought everybody in the building and got them out of vision, out of sight."
The library employee told KRXI she'd called police four times during the event to request help; police records show they responded twice. She added, "When you have a situation where it's potentially volatile and weapon appears -- simply a presence, indicating that there are police nearby, would have been reassuring to the families."
No police were on the scene at the time the armed man approached the library; they returned when people called 911, but by then the man had left. At least a helpful police statement explained that because Nevada allows open carry of firearms, they wouldn't have arrested the man with a gun who terrified families and children, because what are you, afraid of Liberty? In fact, KXRI notes, open carry of firearms is even legal in public libraries, though not in schools.
California
In the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova on Saturday, a Pride event at the Sacramento Children's Museum for children and families was picketed by anti-LGBTQ protesters, but folks attending the event pushed back. according to KVOR-TV:
Drag princess Suzette Veneti says she wasn’t surprised, she was disappointed and wanted answers. One sign read: “Groomers are not welcome in California.” Another read: “Protect white children.”
“You’re standing there with a megaphone and signs, you’re scaring kids,” Veneti said. “They could’ve protested at Pride. They could protest anywhere they want, but to pick a children’s museum with children, like, this is for kids.”
The Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus was at the event, too; chorus member Andrew Gibout said, "There were a lot of young volunteers just in tears, because they had never experienced something like this."
“Members of the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus stood in front of a group of neo-Nazis with a megaphone attempting to harass + disrupt a #Pride2022 event with children + families in #RanchoCordova and sang until the white supremacists left the area. https://t.co/HhEUuW5Izk”— It's Going Down (@It's Going Down) 1656406685
Fortunately, sometimes a story time event turns into a story book plot all on its own: The choir and others attending the event shielded the kids and parents from the protesters and sang them away.
“It was like this is what we do,” Gibout said. “And so we all started to join in the chorus of ‘We are the World’ like 57 times, and it drowned out all the hate. They ultimately walked away, because no one could hear them anymore, so it didn’t matter what they were saying.”
And that's what Pride is all about, Charlie Brown.
Texas
One more? Sure! Buzzfeed News reports on another heartening response to hate, this time in McKinney, Texas, north of Dallas. Families at Saturday's Pride Month Family Storytime event were again protected from rightwing protesters by LGBTQ and allied counter-protesters who far outnumbered the Proud Boys creeps.
Wearing Pride rainbows and carrying signs to support the library and the LGBTQ community, these counterprotesters were on a mission to drown out the hate and make those attending feel welcome.
“The word went out on the internet…and people showed up,” said Michael Phillips, a historian and senior research fellow at Southern Methodist University, who was among the counterprotesters. “It was pretty well organized to make sure that the families bringing their children to this event weren't harassed, weren’t harangued — basically to form a human shield.”
“We formed a corridor that families could pass through,” Phillips added.
Goddamn right I cried a little reading that. And here are pics, from the Twitters.
“Thanks to @_josie98 and others who blocked these people from harassing kids and families. And to all the LGBTQ community members and allies who showed up to make sure the entrance was clear of the hate groups. McKinney showed up!”— Kathryn (@Kathryn) 1656194568
And by golly, the spirit of kindness and community even seems to have won over a McKinney City Council member who had worried the event might have been depraved and stuff. Council Member Patrick Cloutier said he'd visited the library Friday and been very concerned that the books to be read used terrifying terms like "queer" and "drag queen," and told other council members he wouldn't want his two-year-old granddaughter "exposed to" that stuff. But then he went — by himself.
Cloutier said he was pleasantly surprised. The event was held in a room that wouldn’t disturb other patrons who hadn’t bought tickets or who didn’t want to hear the readings. And the woman who read the books — who was not a drag performer — was engaging and made the children smile, Cloutier said.
“I was appreciative that people who were voluntarily there got what they wanted and what they were looking for,” Cloutier said. “The way she engaged the kids and the words that came out of her mouth, I saw nothing wrong with when I was in there.”
Maybe his heart grew three sizes that day. Unfortunately, BuzzFeed appears not to have asked if he'd take his granddaughter next year. Baby steps.

Sunday Shows Highlight Both Sides Of Roe's Demise, Because Sunday Shows Bad At Journalism
You didn't expect any better.
There have been many evil reactions since the illegitimate Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. And there have been some good ones!
Let's take a look at some of both from this week's Sunday shows.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on NBC's 'Meet The Press'
Chuck Todd asked Arkansas GOP Gov. Asa Hutchinson about the trigger law bill he signed that banned all abortions except to protect the life of the mother, in the wake of Roe's untimely death.
All Hutchinson had to offer was how sad he was about kids having to carry incest pregnancies to term.
TODD: So if a 13-year-old though in Arkansas is raped by a relative, that 13-year-old cannot get an abortion in Arkansas. Are you comfortable with that?
HUTCHINSON: I’m not – I would've preferred a different outcome than that. But that's not the debate today in Arkansas. It might be in the future. But for now, the law triggered with only one exception.
Hutchinson sure wishes the abortion ban bill he signed included those provisions, but what was he supposed to do? Veto the bill? That would actually take courage! Can't have that.
Todd correctly pointed out that whatever anyone thought about Roe, it never forced anyone to do anything they didn't want to. He asked Hutchinson if he felt uncomfortable forcing people to do things they don't want to. Hutchinson simply reiterated how comfortable he was with it.
HUTCHINSON: Well, no, I think it's a very appropriate ruling. Obviously, when you're looking at the government and the power of the government forcing someone to carry a child to term, you've got to think that through. And legislators are thinking that through.
The GOP hasn't "thought this through."
Here's Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responding to Hutchinson's bullshit:
“WATCH: @RepAOC (D-N.Y.) responds to Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-Ark.) and the state's abortion ban.

“This decision and this policy will kill people no matter what their spin and what their talking points are.””— Meet the Press (@Meet the Press) 1656283625
AOC listed actions the Democratic Party could take to protect abortion, like opening clinics on federal lands in red states or expanding access to abortion pills. And she underlined that this is "not just a crisis of Roe," but a "crisis of our democracy."
“WATCH: Democrats must realize that the implications of the Roe decision are "not just a crisis of Roe" but "a crisis of our democracy,” @AOC says. #MTP

“The Supreme Court has dramatically overreached its authority. … This is a crisis of legitimacy.””— Meet the Press (@Meet the Press) 1656256681
After Todd showed a quote from Democratic Senator Joe Manchin saying he was "misled" by justices who lied "under oath" about their intentions regarding Roe, AOC laid out what actions should be taken considering these abuses.
“ICYMI: Impeachment “should be very seriously considered" if Supreme Court nominees lied under oath, @repaoc tells #MTP.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez: "There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and hostile takeover of our Democratic institutions."”— Meet the Press (@Meet the Press) 1656326194
If we take Joe Manchin or Susan Collins at their word that they are shocked Brett Kavanaugh or Neil Gorsuch lied to them, Democrats must act to show that they are not above them law.
Or we guess they could just call bullshit on Collins and Manchin pretending to be stupid and just label them the pandering assclowns they are.
Gov. Kristi Noem and Sen. Elizabeth Warren on ABC's 'This Week'
South Dakota GOP Gov. Kristi Noem made dual appearances on ABC's "This Week" and CBS's "Face The Nation." In both cases, the anchors called Noem and the GOP out on their pretend concern about children.
On "Face The Nation" Noem promised any law enforcement would be directed toward abortion doctors, not women:
“Abortion is now a criminal act in South Dakota, but Gov. Kristi Noem says the state will work to ensure women aren’t prosecuted when it comes to abortions.

“It will always be focused towards those doctors who knowingly break the law to perform abortions in our state.””— Face The Nation (@Face The Nation) 1656255298
But over on ABC, Noem didn't completely foreclose the idea of trying to criminalize people leaving South Dakota for out-of-state abortion care:
“Even thought she repeatedly said women shouldn't be prosecuted for getting abortions, Noem's ABC interviews ends with her leaving the door open to prosecuting South Dakota residents who travel to other states for abortions”— Aaron Rupar (@Aaron Rupar) 1656255100
Surprise, Noem had little response when it was pointed out just how shitty red states like hers are at caring for actual living and breathing women and children.
These red states will do nothing for pregnant people, because life is only precious until people are born, after which they are moochers. Also maybe they will prosecute people for trying to travel out of state for healthcare.
Thankfully after Noem was done spewing her talking points, ABC had Sen. Elizabeth Warren to respond to Noem's lies. She didn't mince words:
WARREN: Look, what she's really saying is that when this decision is made, it should be made by the government. That the government should move in and the government should determine whether or not a pregnancy is forced to continue or whether or not a pregnancy can be terminated.
She also had her own solution to the SCOTUS legitimacy crisis:
“The Supreme Court has "burned whatever legitimacy they may still have had" with their ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Sen. Elizabeth Warren tells @MarthaRaddatz.

"They just took the last of it and set a torch to it.” https://t.co/EPXQrwR4Ui”— This Week (@This Week) 1656275930
More on that in this Wonkette post right here!
Sen. Lindsey Graham and Stacey Abrams on 'Fox News Sunday'
On Fox News, Lindsey Graham said he just really doesn't think the Supreme Court should take away people's contraception and their marriages, but then he changed the subject and started blaming Ruth Bader Ginsburg for whatever is happening now.
“Asked on Fox News about Clarence Thomas saying SCOTUS should revisit rights to same-sex marriage & contraception, Lindsey Graham signals he doesn't think the court should go that far, but then brings up RBG, saying "she chose not to retire ... it was an amazing series of events."”— Aaron Rupar (@Aaron Rupar) 1656251590
Oh, he could barely contain his glee.
Meanwhile, Stacey Abrams smacked down conservatives using race to justify their taking away of reproductive rights.
“Stacey Abrams on Fox News on arguments that legal abortion results in the loss of too many "Black lives that matter": "I think that's a very specious argument that's used to cloak what is I think a deeply disturbing approach to this conversation."”— Aaron Rupar (@Aaron Rupar) 1656252618
The overturning of Roe v. Wade has made what we have been warning about starkly clear: The GOP is an existential threat to democracy and freedom. The Democratic Party, if it intends to meet this moment, needs to do more than use this for fundraising emails while publicly stating they want "a strong GOP" or calling a cynical villain a "man of honor.” AOC, Warren, Abrams and many others have stepped up to fight head-on since this happened.
Democratic leadership would do well to follow their lead.
Have a week.
