China is 'developing the capability' to invade Taiwan, says top US general - BBC News
A Chinese attack on Taiwan is not imminent, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley has said, but the US is watching "very closely".
China is clearly developing the capability to attack at some point, but deciding to do so would be a political choice, Genral Milley told the BBC.
China says Taiwan is a breakaway province that must be re-unified with the mainland, by force if necessary.

China is calling on Myanmar's junta to negotiate with its opponents | DW News
Myanmar's military government has hosted its first international meeting since it seized power in last year's coup. The gathering of what's called the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Group included China's foreign minister Wang Yi. Myanmar's state broadcaster reported that Wang met with his colleagues from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The grouping is a Chinese-led initiative with nations bordering the Mekong River. Potential regional tensions are involved here, because of the many hydroelectric projects that are changing the river's flow and possibly damaging its ecology. The meeting was condemned by Myanmar's shadow National Unity Government, which opposes the military.

In China owning your own business is as common as getting a job. The sheer number of ma and pa operations is staggering. Each individual business sells a specific set of goods and because there are so many people in China this system seems to work. In the west if you tried this you wouldn't fare very good as there just aren't enough people to make a go of it. The west is mostly big box stores but in China the small stores are the dominant sellers. They have a lower over head and thus lower prices. It's hard to compete with them on price. The new China high end malls are only for the brand name companies so if you want to get brand name you have to shop at the big boy stores in China. Watch as I walk around some random areas of Nanning and take video of some of the little shops and the goods they are selling. So you’re China
You have the ambitions to take over the world and your economy is growing fast
One way you’re funding your goal is with your Belt and Road Initiative, or one belt one road, a plan to make it easier for anyone to trade with China. Another is Made in China 2025
Your energy demands for electricity, oil, etc, are higher than ever and it’s gonna keep growing
The original Silk Road that connected China to the rest of the world runs through an area of China called Xinjiang.
Xinjiang is also home to a ton of natural resources.
It has 40% of your coal reserves, 25% of your gas reserves, so Xinjiang is your most important piece of land
Xinjiang is home to the Uighurs
If Uighurs don’t feel like they’re a part of the Chinese culture, they could want to form their own independent nation
If you don’t do something about this issue, everything falls apart
You need to flood the city with police and 24 hour surveillance to keep the peace. So you turn Xinjiang into a high tech police state to categorize people as safe, regular, or unsafe
So you build re-education camps
This is gonna cost a lot of money to build and maintain but the ROI of tightening our grip on this region will be make us a lot more money
While you have all these people captured, you might as well use them as cheap labor
We can’t afford to lose any business so once word does get out, you gotta suck up your pride and control the narrative

Derek Scissors from the American Enterprise Institute joins The Exchange with Kelly Evans to discuss China's regulatory crackdowns on tech and education. There's going to be a booming tech sector in China, Scissor says, but under their own rules. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Two U.S.-listed Chinese education stocks plunged Friday after reports of a government crackdown on the sector that included bans on foreign investment.
TAL Education shares tumbled 70.8%. New Oriental Education and Technology shares dropped by 54.2%.
The reports come as Chinese authorities stepped up restrictions in recent months on the private education industry, and increased scrutiny on domestic companies listing overseas in the U.S.
Caixin, a major Chinese financial news site, reported Friday that new Chinese government restrictions on the education sector were starting to be implemented in Beijing and other cities nationwide.
Copies of the policy document were circulating online Friday afternoon.
Educational training institutions are banned from raising money through stock listings, while foreign capital cannot invest, according to a copy of the Chinese-language document seen and translated by CNBC. It was dated July 19 as issued from the top executive body — the State Council — and the Chinese Communist Party’s central committee.
One of the bans on foreign investment included variable interest entities, a common structure by which Chinese companies use to list in the U.S. Existing violations of the capital bans must be addressed, the document said.
CNBC has not independently verified the document. The Ministry of Education did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment outside of Beijing business hours.
A policy document of the same name — referring to lowering costs for after-school tutoring — was among five approved at a May 21 meeting chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The version circulating Friday banned after-school tutoring businesses from advertising, and said they could not operate during public holidays, weekends and winter and summer vacations.
New Oriental Education declined to comment to CNBC, and TAL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The stock plunges followed sharp declines for education stocks traded in Hong Kong, which began to drop in the afternoon.
Shares of New Oriental’s Hong Kong-listed subsidiary Koolearn fell 28% on Friday.
UBS analyst Felix Liu said in a note Friday the firm was putting its ratings on TAL, New Oriental and Koolearn under review “given the potential substantial impacts to fundamentals and the reported regulation pending official confirmation.”

The Cheesemaker Changing Chinese Food Culture
China may seem like the least likely place to find locally made artisanal cheeses—such as camembert, ricotta, and blue cheese—but Liu Yang, a Chinese cheesemaker, is changing that. Our host Nicola Davis visits Yang's cheese shop in Beijing, tries his handcrafted cheeses, and visits the dairy farm where he sources his milk from. As Yang talks about the young dairy industry in China, he believes his "customers need to be educated so they can understand, and fall in love with cheese culture."

I will take you guys to my grandfather's studio! He is actually an artist and he draws Traditional Chinese painting.
Today we will learn Chinese while he draws painting. It will be so interesting!
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guóhuà, meaning "national" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

World Health Organisation 'has been bought out by Communist China'
The World Health Organisation is “an iconic example” of a United Nations body which has “been subject to a hostile takeover by the Chinese state in recent years,” says the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Michael Shoebridge

Hong Kong's world-class health care system plagued by shortage of doctors
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: https://sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
Hong Kong has one of the world’s top-ranked medical services, providing the city’s 7.4 million people with care that has a good reputation for availability, affordability and quality.
But the universal, low-cost public health care system has a downside – including long waiting times and relatively less comfort and privacy than private-sector patients get.
The public system also faces a shortage of practitioners, a serious issue the city will increasingly have to grapple with as its population continues to grow and age.
Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after ...

China's city lockdown to control coronavirus spread is 'most extraordinary': Health expert
One critical issue in the China coronavirus outbreak is whether the human-to-human transmission will be sustained, says Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Procter & Gamble said Thursday that it is monitoring the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus as the World Health Organization weighs whether to call the virus a global health emergency.
The global consumer giant, which owns brands such as Vicks and Pampers, counts China as one of its two largest markets, along with the United States. Halfway through fiscal 2020, P&G; said that it has seen growth of 13% in the Asian country.
The virus was first diagnosed less than a month ago and has already killed at least 17 people in China. Roughly 650 cases of the virus have been reported in China, and several ...

President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19. But there's no doubt that the WHO's response destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.
The WHO's actions in response to COVID-19, in part, stemmed from its overly deferential stance towards China, which is its second-biggest financial contributor among 194 member states.
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" is how Bruce Aylward, head of the joint WHO-China mission, described China's handling of the outbreak on February 25, 2020, a day after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China's "rapid response," which he claimed "changed the course of this epidemic."
The WHO also praised China for releasing the virus's genome while neglecting to mention that it took them at least 17 days to do so. It didn't report human-to-human transmission until late January—even though Chinese doctors suspected it at least a month earlier. Although the extreme lockdown of Wuhan likely saved thousands of lives, WHO scientists weren't allowed into Wuhan until 3 weeks after the outbreak first came to light, leaving open many questions about measures the government took in the interim. Meanwhile, the WHO praised the country for its supposed openness.
"China took action at the epicenter, and that helped prevent the spread to other provinces and the rest of the world," Ghebreyesus said on February 15.
"As China has shown, this does not need to be a pandemic if we take action," WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on February 28.
As the virus continued spreading across Europe and reached America, the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan, which also warned the WHO that it suspected that the virus was spreading through human-to-human transmission, yet was ignored. Taiwan, which has one of the lowest rates of known COVID-19 infections per capita, was prevented from joining the WHO as a member country in 2015 by China, which refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
In late March, World Health Organization epidemiologist Bruce Aylward declined to answer a Hong Kong reporter's question about Taiwan—or even acknowledge its existence.
As Taiwan was distributing face masks to its citizens, the WHO was advising the rest of the world that they were unnecessary—and initially, the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Surgeon General followed its lead.
But health experts pointed to mounting evidence that masks can help slow the spread of respiratory disease, especially among asymptomatic carriers, a population that the WHO maintains is virtually nonexistent despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
In mid-February, the WHO trumpeted good news from China, claiming confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 had declined, ignoring evidence that it may have been a statistical anomaly. U.S. intelligence, meanwhile, believes that China has entirely misrepresented both case numbers and death tolls, according to Bloomberg News.
Finally on March 11, after Italy was already in full national lockdown with more than 10,000 cases, the WHO finally acknowledged the true magnitude of the crisis, declaring a global pandemic.
As the death toll climbs above 100,000, the global economy remains in crisis, and billions of lives are disrupted, it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all.

The World Health Organisation is “an iconic example” of a United Nations body which has “been subject to a hostile takeover by the Chinese state in recent years,” says the Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Michael Shoebridge
The World Health Organisation on Tuesday came out in defence of China's wet markets and argued for the Wuhan market to reopen stating, "with proper regulation and good hygiene practices, it's possible to have safe food sold in wet markets".
The move has been criticised as it is widely believed the deadly coronavirus pandemic initially stemmed from one such market in Wuhan, where rare and exotic animals are butchered and sold as food.
Mr Shoebridge said the world has "under-invested" in the WHO, meaning "they have been bought cheaply by China which is now using them for its political and strategic purposes".
"The WHO is meant to be the world’s high beam headlights to help prevent and contain pandemics, that’s its top priority," he said.
"But what we saw from the WHO, right from the start of the COVID pandemic was it acting like a rear-view mirror instead of high beam headlights”.

Pressure on the public system has already started pushing patients – those who can afford it – to the private-sector medical care in Hong Kong is second-most expensive in the world, after the United States.

Strict regulations to control the spread of coronavirus in China are taking a toll on mental health as people are confined to their homes for weeks.
Health professionals say millions are struggling to cope with anxiety and fears over the future.
Those under lockdown in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, are particularly at risk.

Roughly 650 cases of the virus have been reported in China, and several other countries have confirmed cases. U.S. health authorities have quarantined one Washington state man with the virus. Symptoms range from a mild cough to fever to pneumonia.
Seven Chinese cities near Wuhan are under lockdown in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Lunar New Year’s events in Beijing, China, have reportedly been canceled.
“I have no idea what the investments are going to be relative to the new virus,” Chief Financial and Operating Officer Jon Moeller told analysts.
Moeller said the company will monitor the virus as it relates to the health of its employees and the broader community. He also said that the virus could have broad impacts beyond its business in China.
“It can also affect consumer confidence and large parts of the market. It can affect travel, which does affect our business, and so it’s one of the many pieces of volatility that’s just important as we think about the prospects for the future,” Moeller said.
P&G; products like its pricey SK-II skincare line are often sold in airports and are popular with international tourists.
The company reported its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday. P&G; beat Wall Street’s earnings estimates but fell short on revenue. It also raised its full-year outlook. Shares were trading down less than 1% in morning trading.
