Note that this video was created in 2016 and this theater has since transitioned to laser. This short film takes you deep inside an IMAX projection booth revealing the meticulous process of threading a 70mm film print through a Mini Cooper sized film projector. The resolution of 70mm film is still far greater than what 4K digital projectors can produce. IMAX has been around since the 70's and still boasts a higher quality image than today's digital. So if you're wondering why IMAX costs a little bit more, think of the projectionists! W're not just putting in a Blu Ray and pressing play...
Some of these shots were taken a year apart. I began shooting with the GoPro in December of 2014 and started to cut this together. After a couple of months I couldn't really figure out how I wanted this to flow so I put it on the shelf for a while. Towards the end of summer 2015 I picked up the Nikon D5500 and began shooting more with that. Between that and the Hero 4 I was able to get a lot of interesting shots and by early 2016 I had the final cut. Quite a long process but after working in IMAX for 9+ years I really felt like most people seeing a 70mm film were completely unaware of how this system works or what IMAX is. IMAX is an aging technology but is still superior in many ways. Please share this to spread the word and maybe we can keep IMAX alive for a few more decades.

The film centers on a team led by Ed Viesturs and Everest director David Breashears; among their number are Spanish climber Araceli Segarra, and Jamling Tenzing Norgay, son of the pioneering Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, the first person to summit Everest.
Everest was in production at the mountain during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which another group of climbers became trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The film includes footage of these events, as the IMAX team assist Beck Weathers and other survivors. Producer and co-director Greg MacGillivray later said that while editing the documentary for release, he and Breashears decided to focus more on the tragedy, due to the popularity of Jon Krakauer's book about the 1996 disaster, Into Thin Air.

IMAX
IMAX (an acronym for Image MAXimum) is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards created by Canadian company IMAX Corporation and developed by Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw. IMAX has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. Since 2002, some feature films have been converted (or upgraded) into IMAX format for displaying in IMAX theatres and some have also been partially shot in IMAX.
IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations. As of October 1, 2015, there were 1008 IMAX theatres in 66 countries.
History
The desire to increase the visual impact of film has a long history. In 1929, Fox introduced Fox Grandeur, the first 70 mm film format, but it quickly fell from use. In the 1950s, the potential of 35 mm film to provide wider projected images was explored in the processes of CinemaScope (1953) and VistaVision (1954), following multi-projector systems such as Cinerama (1952). While impressive, Cinerama was difficult to install.

Note that this video was created in 2016 and this theater has since transitioned to laser. This short film takes you deep inside an IMAX projection booth revealing the meticulous process of threading a 70mm film print through a Mini Cooper sized film projector. The resolution of 70mm film is still far greater than what 4K digital projectors can produce. IMAX has been around since the 70's and still boasts a higher quality image than today's digital. So if you're wondering why IMAX costs a little bit more, think of the projectionists! W're not just putting in a Blu Ray and pressing play...
Some of these shots were taken a year apart. I began shooting with the GoPro in December of 2014 and started to cut this together. After a couple of months I couldn't really figure out how I wanted this to flow so I put it on the shelf for a while. Towards the end of summer 2015 I picked up the Nikon D5500 and began shooting more with that. Between that and the Hero 4 I was able to get a lot of interesting shots and by early 2016 I had the final cut. Quite a long process but after working in IMAX for 9+ years I really felt like most people seeing a 70mm film were completely unaware of how this system works or what IMAX is. IMAX is an aging technology but is still superior in many ways. Please share this to spread the word and maybe we can keep IMAX alive for a few more decades.

The 45-minute documentary is narrated by Irish actor Liam Neeson and was filmed entirely in IMAX. It includes a description of the training required in order to climb the 29,029 feet to the summit of Mount Everest and the challenges faced during the ascent, such as avalanches, blizzards, and oxygen deprivation. The film centers on a team led by Ed Viesturs and Everest director David Breashears; among their number are Spanish climber Araceli Segarra, and Jamling Tenzing Norgay, son of the pioneering Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, the first person to summit Everest.
Everest was in production at the mountain during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which another group of climbers became trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The film includes footage of these events, as the IMAX team assist Beck Weathers and other survivors. Producer and co-director Greg MacGillivray later said that while editing the documentary for release, he and Breashears decided to focus more on the tragedy, due to the popularity of Jon Krakauer's book about the 1996 disaster, Into Thin Air.

IMAX
IMAX (an acronym for Image MAXimum) is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards created by Canadian company IMAX Corporation and developed by Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw. IMAX has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. Since 2002, some feature films have been converted (or upgraded) into IMAX format for displaying in IMAX theatres and some have also been partially shot in IMAX.
IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations. As of October 1, 2015, there were 1008 IMAX theatres in 66 countries.
History
The desire to increase the visual impact of film has a long history. In 1929, Fox introduced Fox Grandeur, the first 70 mm film format, but it quickly fell from use. In the 1950s, the potential of 35 mm film to provide wider projected images was explored in the processes of CinemaScope (1953) and VistaVision (1954), following multi-projector systems such as Cinerama (1952). While impressive, Cinerama was difficult to install.
