Update at bottom

Take a look at this screenshot. In the center, a sorcerer on top of a raised dais, surrounded by a force field and two Nothic-like creatures. Below that dais, the rest of the party -- a ranger, his drake, and a paladin.

Last session, the players came across what they thought was the big bad -- a Rakshasa -- meditating at a shrine at the end of a long cathedral hall, his back turned to them.

They decided to have the Sorcerer in the party cast Fly on himself, drink a (homebrew) Potion of Invisibility, and sneak up behind the Rakshasa. The plan was then to attach a magical broach they'd received that would inhibit the Rakshasa's powers and allow them to kill it. They are, after all, only level 6, so a McGuffin like this was necessary to even the playing field.

Welp... Surprise, it was a trap! Just like allll the other traps and illusions this Rakshasa had been using against them for the better part of a year. As soon as he touched the Rakshasa, it was revealed as an illusion. It faded, a 30ft magical barrier appeared around the raised dais, and two suped-up Nothics (CR3-4ish each, actually this encounter I posted yesterday) dropped from the ceiling, Surprising the Sorcerer. On top of being Surprised, he rolled dead last in the Initiative Order. :( Now he is separated from his party and very very likely to die before they can reach him.

This wall was originally conceived to be impenetrable, but do I change that now that things are looking so grim? Do I let them try to climb the wall, even though it's made of energy? Do I tell them they see crystals in the corners that are powering it? Do I let them attack the wall and destroy it? Or do I go with my original plan -- that it's a nearly impenetrable force field meant to prevent escape?

I am just sad that this might mean a character death, or even worse, a TPK.. But man they should have known better than to send their squishiest member alone, without doing any sort of recon first, against a Rakshasa that has been screwing with them like this for ages..

EDIT: Wow this blew up. We actually just finished the session!

It was really exciting! I rolled all my dice in the open for a change, and I've never seen the players so creative and invested. They really, really did their best. Here's how the combat went:

How should I organize all of my shit? Like I have maps I’ve made and then just a ton of messy notes on my notes app on my phone. I have access to a laptop but it’s battery life is so shit it has to be plugged in for use. Any advice?

Going to run House of Lament in a week and I had this idea to change it up a little by putting a clue in a cryptex. But I’ll need a riddle as part of it.

It’s an easy way to encourage role playing, add fun and engaging sessions, and tie the PCs to the world early on.

If your friend is making a divination wizard, what will they do prior to hitting level 2? hunt down a tome of divination spells in an abandoned tower, only to receive a flash of prophecy upon touching it?

Your paladin is about to hit level 3 and was eyeing the oath of vengeance? Time to kidnap and kill that NPC they like so much.

Even something as simple as a blessing or ritual for a Druid choosing their circle adds a deep narrative element to the mechanics. It’s also free adventure planning, as far as I’m concerned.

Thoughts? Have you implemented anything like this in your games?

(On mobile so I hope format ends up ok) I’m playing with a group of new players. Outside of a one shot that we played with pre-generated characters, this is all of their first time playing.

I didn’t want to limit them in making their characters, which might have been my first mistake, so we ended up with 2 artificers, a wizard, and a druid. We rolled stats and they all took my advice to put their highest roll in their main stat but none of them took the advice to prioritize - or at least not dump - DEX and CON. For various reasons, “let the characters die and the players will learn a lesson” is not an option.

The way I see it, I’ve got 3 options:

  1. I’ve got all of their character sheets because we ran out of time before calculating AC and skill bonuses. I told them I’d finish that up for them. Therefore, I could change their stats and I am 100% sure that none of them would notice. This, to me, it’s the worst option.

  2. Let it go and do my best to make it fun for my players with AC of 9 and 11, probably by fudging rolls

  3. Make a DMPC barbarian or fighter that can absorb the hits and damage (or maybe a warrior sidekick).

What would you do in this situation? Is there an option I’m not seeing?

EDIT: we’re starting at level 1. There’s a character with AC 9 and 6 HP. A crit could easily one shot insta kill the wizard
