Fr. Frank Fahey: Ballintubber Abbey
Fr. Frank Fahey talks about Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
Ballintubber Abbey is a royal abbey two kilometres northeast of the village of Ballintubber, County Mayo in Ireland, founded by King Cathal Crobdearg Ua Conchobair in 1216. It is said to be the only church in Ireland founded by an Irish king that is still in regular use.
Despite being suppressed and damaged during the Protestant Reformation, the roofless abbey continued to be used throughout penal times by Catholics. In 1966, the nave was restored and re-roofed in time for the 750th anniversary of the abbey's foundation and, in 1997, the Chapter House and Dorter area were restored and re-roofed. It is planned to restore the entire east wing before the 800th year celebration in 2016.

FEE walk out of Frank Fahey meeting 17-01-2011
Frank Fahey TD and Dr. Alan Ahearne (NUIG economist) spoke at a public meeting in the Clayton Hotel, Galway, and really saw the anger and frustration being felt across the country. The meeting was chaired by Padraig O'Ceidigh and was attended by about 200-250 people.
The audience sat and listened for over an hour and a half while the panel extolled the wondrous virtues of the recover plan and reminded of the menace that will be the next FG/Labour government.
When the audience were finally given a chance to ask questions any attempt to deal with the Fahey or Fianna Fáil legacy was ignored or an attempt was made to waffle the way out. When Fahey treated the audience with such disrespect in regard to education FEE staged a walkout and was joined by a large section of the audience.

The abbey has several modern outdoor attractions, including a very modern abstract Way of the Cross, an underground permanent Crib, and a Rosary Way. There is a small museum. According to the Ballintubber website, Seán na Sagart, the infamous priest-hunter, is buried in the cemetery. A large tree marks the spot.
The abbey marks the beginning of Tochar Phádraig, the ancient pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick, long defunct but now reopened as a cross-country pilgrimage and tourist trail. (Wikipedia). It is 21km from Westport.

Sorry about the shaky camera etc, this is an effort to show what was going on in the meeting beyond lies and the 'Anglo Avenger'.
